After months, decades maybe, of wild speculation about the state of Donald Trump's hair the sitting President finally came clean during a presentation... we just had to look closer.

 

A Long Battle With Hair Loss

According to his own doctor, Trump has been using an FDA approved hair loss medication for a long time. On it's own it would not prove enough to stop the advances of genetically inherited male pattern baldness... check out pictures of Donald with his dad back in the eighties and you will that Donald Jr was already sporting an ambitious comb over, while dad appeared to have more hair on his eyebrows than on his head. Thirty years on and that comb over has become a thing of wonder. Such are the complex waves and sweeps of mane that it is impossible to say what started where and where it travels, it is the result, by his own admission, of serious time spent in front of  a mirror each morning armed only with a comb and a couple of cans of fast hold hairspray.

Wild Speculation

We have written before on the various theories offered to explain what we are looking at atop the Presidents head. Some blame outdated procedures like scalp reduction, others suggest he went down the road of a transplant and that the crazy stylings are necessary to hide the scars. None of which ever sounded completely convincing. Appearances on TV where he had been asked about his hair gave one presenter, Jimmy Fallon, the opportunity to run his hands through the then President-elect's hair... something Mr Fallon says has held him back since. While it was a slightly ignominious moment for Donald, one we are certain he will never allow to be repeated, it certainly gave the lie to any theory suggesting he wore a hair system... not that we ever thought he did. While we have seen plenty of bad hair systems we cannot imagine anyone ever walking in and paying good money, with all due respect, to end up with Donald's mane.

The Truth Will Out

There were clues. It is tough to walk up the steps onto Air Force One on a windy day and keep your hair in place. Recently an unkind gust seemed to lift the hair on the back of his head, like a cover on a dinner plate it revealed a large bare patch beneath. So we come to a conservative conference in Maryland where Donald was speaking to the faithful. Glancing around he became aware of the screens in the room showing him from numerous angles, his attention was drawn to one screen that was showing him from behind. He drew the crowd's attention to the screen saying "What a nice picture that is. Look at that. I'd love to watch that guy speak." He then seemed to consider how his hair appeared from that angle and began putting his hands to his hair.. He went on "Oh, I try like hell to hide that bald spot folks, I work hard at it." It doesn't look bad. Hey we are hanging in there. Right? Together we are hanging in."

Lots of salons claim to be able to produce legendary hairstyles but can any of them compete with these genuine legends passed down through the centuries?

1. Samson. The last of the judges of the Ancient Isrealites who lost all his immense strength when his hair was cut. Actually, his superhuman strength wasn’t down to his long hair.  It’s just that cutting it short meant he’d broken his Nazrite vows so when Delilah took the shears to it that was the end of that.  Well up until the point it grew back and he collapsed a temple with his bare hands, killing all his enemies in one stroke.
2. Over to Greece and the Medusa. One of the Gorgons, this winged female monster had venomous snakes in place of hair and could turn people to stone.  If you’re into cheesy ‘70s movies then you might remember Perseus using her severed head to turn the Kraken to stone in Clash of the Titans.
3. Originally a Brothers Grimm tale but recently revamped in the Disney film Tangled.  Consistently having someone climb up and down your very long hair is a definite recipe for traction alopecia!
4. Thor’s Wife Sif apparently had her hair cut off and stolen by Loki who hadn’t anticipated a rather angry reaction from Thor himself. Loki, thinking on his feet improved the hair by weaving more out of pure gold.  Marvel haven’t got round to this story yet but expect it at some point in the movie series.  Also, this might go some way to explaining the unusual Trump style and colour.
5. The sword of Damocles. When Dionysus wanted to illustrate the precariousness of Kingship to one of his subjects he used a single horse’s hair to suspend a sword above his head throughout a banquet.  Fortunately, the hair from the tail proved more resilient than a human hair and Damocles survived to learn his lesson.

 

A team at UT Southwestern in Dallas have published some amazing results from their research into hair loss. We look closer.

 

UT Southwestern

As one of the nation's premier academic centers, with an expenditure on research well in excess of $400M a year, the teams from UT Southwestern are regularly published in medical journals. It is a serious generator of new ideas. Dr. Lu Le was leading a team that were, as has so often been the case in giant strides in medicine (penicillin anyone?), looking at something completely different. In Dr Le's own words "Although this project was started in an effort to understand how certain kinds of tumors form, we ended up learning why hair turns grey and discovering the identity of the cell that directly gives rise to hair." He went on, "With this knowledge, we hope in the future to create a topical compound or to safely deliver the necessary gene to hair follicles to correct these cosmetic problems."

KROX20

It was already known that stem cells contained in a bulge area of hair follicles were involved in hair generation, and that stem cell factor (SCF), a protein, was essential. Dr. Le's team discovered that cells involved in hair generation create the KROX20 protein. So cells with KROX20 and SCF are present they will move up from the bulb, interact with the cells that produce melanocyte cells and make pigmented hair. When the team removed the SCF the hair would grow gray, or white according to age. More interestingly, when they removed the KROX20 the hair did not grow at all.

The Future

Dr Le and his team are now investigating how the production of KROX20 and SCF are affected over time. Why is it that our hair thins and bleaches with age? The answers could have implications for hair loss sufferers everywhere, but especially those experiencing, or expecting, male or female pattern baldness.

Excited as were to read news of an advance in hair loss, and from such a well respected source too, we wait to read more on the future research. Right now they have definitely identified something important, whether overcoming your DNA and growing hair is as simple as adding a single protein remains to be seen. The gust of wind that blew Donald Trump’s hair up revealing a bald patch on the back of his head as he boarded Air Force One could be just the clue that the media have been looking for.  For years his unique combover has been the centre of press speculation.  Some have asserted it’s a hair piece whilst others have suggested that it’s the result of a scalp reduction procedure gone wrong.

The truth about Trump's hair may be simple

The truth may be simpler than that.  It could just be the typical result of a hair transplant from decades ago.  The bald spot which he admitted yesterday he tries “like hell” to conceal is in an abnormal place for standard male pattern baldness where hair is usually shed on the crown and forehead.  In Trump’s case the bald spot at the back could well be the result of Follicular Unit Transplantation where strips of skin are taken from donor areas at the back and sides of the hair to transplant onto the balding areas. These days the procedure has evolved into a far less invasive technique called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) where individual hairs are transplanted using fine needles and a stereo microscope.  It’s a lengthier procedure but the results are far better with virtually none of the lateral scarring and potential damage to the donor area you can get from FUT.

“it doesn’t look bad”

One thing is for certain is that Trump’s hair will continue to capture the imagination of the world’s media.  Like a trademark he wears a style that is as recognisable as the McDonalds golden arches and although it might not to be everyone’s taste he clearly appreciates it.  At the Conservative Political Actions Conference on 23^rd February  he ran his fingers through it and boasted that “it doesn’t look bad”.

As the self-appointed “vainest man in the world”, the Gogglebox star Chris Butland-Steed has just undergone his third hair transplant in two years.  Struggling with hair loss since his early 20s, Chris is very pleased with the latest procedure which he describes as the “final piece of the jigsaw”, saying, “I won’t require any further surgery”. As a hair stylist Chris had found his own shedding particularly traumatic and like many men opting for a transplant it’s the only way to stop the onset of male pattern baldness and stand a chance of keeping your own flowing hair.

FUE at the cutting edge

The FUE procedure that Chris underwent (Follicular Unit Extraction) is at the cutting edge of hair transplantation.  Essentially single hairs are removed from donor areas, usually the back and sides and are transplanted into the balding areas using a powerful stereo microscope.  It’s a lengthier process than the previous treatment, FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) where whole strips of skin were removed often causing visible lateral scarring.  FUE by contrast is less invasive which means the recovery times are much quicker.  A patient recovering from FUE can expect to be fully recovered within 7 days whereas with strip methods the scars can take weeks to heal over.

There needs to enough donor hair to make it worthwhile

If you’re considering a transplant then you’ll need to speak to a specialist clinic first to establish if you’re a potential candidate.  It’s not a miracle cure for hair loss and you will need to have enough donor hair on the back and sides to make the procedure worthwhile.  You may want to consider other treatments such as medication or Scalp Micropigmentation which may be better value and more appropriate to your condition. Clearly in Chris’ case the hair transplant was the right option and although it’s taken three procedures he’s clearly delighted with the results.

1. Go easy with the heat. Too much styling with hot irons and hair dryers can permanently damage hair.  If you must style all the time think about using the cool setting.
2. Eat a balanced diet. At the end of the day our hair is like a barometer of our general wellbeing.  If your body isn’t getting the right mixture of vitamins and minerals it might well have a negative effect on your hair and skin.
3. Treat your hair well. It should go without saying but over vigorous drying and brushing or too tight man buns and pony tails can result in traction alopecia and unwanted shedding.
4. Chill out. Easier said than done but one of the causes of hair loss is stress and anxiety.  Recent studies in China showed that men were losing their hair at an early age and there’s a theory that this is down to the stress of modern living.
5. Avoid pollutants. There’s growing evidence pointing to pollutants as one of the causes of hair loss.  That’s not just from the obvious things either.  Recent research has indicated that household items (including shampoo!) can even cause the problem if the lid is left off.
6. Don’t use chemical products. Unless it’s a proven medication like minoxidil or finasteride then natural is best.  Hair dyes for example can have a negative affect on a healthy head of hair.
7. Stop smoking. If you haven’t already stopped then this is another reason to kick the habit. Regular smoking results in dry and damaged hair and potentially irreversible hair loss.
8. Drink in moderation. There’s nothing like a hang over to leave your hair limp and lifeless.  Ongoing continuous drinking to excess can result in more severe health problems and potentially total hair loss.

We’re into the award season now with the BAFTAs already done and the Academy Awards only a few weeks away.  Whilst there’s plenty of coverage of female stars on the red carpet most of the discussion will be about the gown chosen for the evening.  Spare a thought for the leading men though.  For them it’s less likely to be about the choice of clothes (after all a tux is a tux) but more about the state of their hair.  Even the first appearance of a bald patch is likely to attract the attention of the world’s press. 2. A hair transplant. This can be a great solution and things have moved on in leaps and bounds in the last 10 years or so.  It does depend on deep pockets which shouldn’t be a problem for any established stars.  It also requires a recovery period which could mean time out of the limelight and it’s only viable whilst there’s enough hair on the back and sides to transplant on top.
3. Scalp Micropigmentation -   This could be the way forward. Firstly, it’s great at covering up an emerging bald spot because it reduces the contrast between scalp and hair but it’s also a long term, low maintenance solution to hair loss.  It’s never going to replace film star flowing locks but it will create a spotlight proof illusion of a real buzz cut.

Swedish firm Follicum have received clearance to move to Phase II clinical trials for their hair loss treatment. We look closer.

One of the new breed of relatively small biotech firms, each with their own area of focus or expertise, Follicum is a Swedish business set up with a focus on discovering and developing peptide drugs. According to the US Library of Medicine the central event of each signalling step in biology is biomolecular recognition, the effectors of most signal transduction processes are peptides. Peptides can be anything from protein fragments, stand alone hormones, toxins, antimicrobials and more. Follicum are working on creating synthetic peptides that can deliver signals which are absent in the patient. Given that peptides are performing this job of messaging throughout the body it would seem a fascinating area for research into all manner of ailments and new ways to treat them.

Positive Study Results Lead To Trial

Their successful application in Germany for a clinical trial on a drug candidate they are calling FOL-005, was only applied for in November following encouraging study results.   FOL-005 is a remarkable addition to the cutting edge hair loss treatments currently being investigated. It involves a protein, oseopontin, which is understood to be involved in the growth of bone tissue. The Swedish team have taken a part of the protein and "parially modified its amino acid sequence." In early studies it has been shown to stimulate and inhibit hair growth.

What Next?

The team plan to see what happens when they take 60 subjects, all suffering from hair loss, and treat two patches of scalp on each. They will receive injections containing one of two different FOL-005 dose levels or a placebo. The intention is to complete the trial and tell us the results during 2018.

Committed to ensuring that the organization is well positioned for the future with a best-in-class-leadership team, the CureSearch Board of Directors has named Kay Koehler as the new CEO, effective February 15, 2018. Koehler has been serving as the Chief Development Officer of CureSearch since 2017. Thrall will consult with CureSearch during the transition process.

Minoxidil is one of only two FDA approved medications for hair loss sufferers, and the only one for women. Here is what you need to know.

 

Minoxidil - Where It Came From

A pharmaceutical business called the Upjohn Company produced a drug called Minoxidil back in 1963 with the intention of treating ulcers. Minoxidil was a vasolidator, a drug which relaxes smooth muscle cells inside the walls of blood vessels and makes the vessels wider. So it was originally marketed as a blood pressure medicine. During one of it's FDA tests it was discovered that the drug had another significant benefit, it promoted hair growth. Upjohn took the smart decision to rebrand their drug as a medication for hair loss sufferers, and never looked back. Today Upjohn is a part of one of the world's largest companies, Pfizer, and the drug they developed is sold around the world under various names, Gainehair, Hairex and Hygaine but predominantly it is marketed as Rogaine.

So How Does It Work?

It might surprise you to learn that the answer to how does it work is that we just do not know. Well, not for sure anyway. A well-educated guess would be that the dilation of the blood vessels allows more oxygen and nutrients to reach the follicle and encourages more hair to grow than would otherwise have been the case.

How Long to See Results, How Long Do They Last?

It is necessary to apply Minoxidil once or twice a day, every day. On the Rogaine website it tells you that you will need to wait at least four months for any results to be seen. So there is a considerable commitment required. For many the Minoxodil will simply not work, for the rest the commitment is for life. Any benefits will disappear within months if use is discontinued.

What Are the Dangers?

Minoxodil is an FDA approved medicine. That means it has been tested and rated safe to use. That is not quite the same thing as having no side effects though and Minoxodil does have a few recognised issues. Hypersensitivity, dryness and dandruff are all associated. There is also the possibility of allergic reactions to the the chemicals used to carry the Minoxidil, propylene glycol is is used in many versions and is known to trigger reactions in some users. Worth mentioning also that,because of the changes in the hair cycle triggered by the drug it can, in some rare users, cause hair loss.

Minoxidil is a great solution for many men and women. If you start treatment early enough, at the point where your temples are receding and you are just beginning to lose hair at the crown, it can stave off further hair loss effectively for a long time. For Minoxidil to be effective, patients need to ensure that they are correctly applying the topical solution twice a day on a daily basis. Noticeable results can often be seen by the sixth month of usage.  Much like Finasteride, the effects of Minoxidil will only last as long as the treatment is continued; otherwise any hair which has grown as a result of the treatment will most likely shed. Shampoo, along with other personal care products have been targeted in the news today for being potentially more harmful than car fumes.  Bizarre as this may seem the claim is based on a thorough study by the Universities of Colarado and California Berkley. According to the lead author Brian Mcdonald “As transportation gets cleaner, those other sources become more and more important.  The stuff we use in our everyday lives can impact air pollution”.

As dangerous as car fumes

The risks stem from Volatile Organic Compounds which these days are well regulated and controlled in the car and fuel industries.  When the group looked at the levels of pollution in Los Angeles they expected to get a 75% to 25% split between chemical production levels and indoor pollution from every day items.  The result was astonishingly more like 50-50. Basically the stuff we use in our normal lives to keep us clean and smelling fragrant now poses as great a threat as fuel burnt in cars and probably requires some regulation.  Co Author Jessica Gilman explains the nature of the problem, “Gasoline is stored in closed, hopefully airtight, containers and the VOCs in gasoline are burned for energy,” she said. “But volatile chemical products used in common solvents and personal care products are literally designed to evaporate. You wear perfume or use scented products so that you or your neighbor can enjoy the aroma. You don’t do this with gasoline,”

Massive concentrations in the home

Further exacerbating the problem is the fact that household personal products are not always air tight and are used in an enclosed space, meaning that we are exposed to far more concentration (up to 10 times more) than outside. The irony is, that other studies have linked chemical pollution to hair loss.  Probably best to make sure that you put the top back on the bottle after use!

An excerpt from the book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump House by Michael Wolff suggested that Ivanka Trump was proud of her family name and treated her father with a light attitude, even with some irony as she made fun of his comb over. Talking about Trumps interesting hairstyle, Ivanka alleged that the golden hue of her father’s hair is due to him being impatient with his hair dye. Washing hair dye out too quickly means that the colour doesn’t darken enough and leaves behind a golden-orange shade, the hair shade that Donald Trump has recently become particularly notorious for. However the book does not give any mention to how Trump uses the hair loss drug Finasteride. This drug has been sold since 1997 and is the first and only oral medication which has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness.

Side Effects Of Finasteride

The drug works by decreasing the amount of testosterone which is converted to dihydrotestosterone, this in turn can prevent hair from falling. Unfortunately, hormone altering drugs always come with numerous potential side effects which can include;

• Any new hair growth can fall out if the drug is discontinued.
• Finasteride works in preserving a re-growing hair
• The medicine was initially created to treat enlarged prostates, which is why the pills which are used for hair growth come in low doses
• High doses of Finasteride can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer
• Almost four percent of men end up losing their libido or becoming impotent
• Even after stopping the medication, patients may not recover their libido for some time
• Negative side effects are rare, however patients are advised to pay close attention to their body’s response and consult a doctor if they notice any changes.

TOWIE star, James Lock, has recently revealed the results of a hair transplant, but not everybody is happy about it. After posting a rather gruesome picture taken after the procedure, his fans have taken to social media to berate the star for undergoing a procedure he clearly didn’t need.

Fans worried Lock is promoting drastic, unnecessary surgery

The main criticism Lock has received after admitting to the transplant, it that he’s promoting unnecessary, drastic surgery. The 31-year old hasn’t shown any signs of losing his hair, at least not in photos anyway. So, why did he feel like he needed a transplant? It appears Lock didn’t like his receding hairline. Although the hair on the scalp was healthy, thick and full, the TOWIE star felt self-conscious about the size of the forehead. However, was surgery really the only way to solve the issue? Not according to one fan… “When you sweep your hair off your forehead 24/7, it can cause the hairline to recede. Get a shorter cut and watch it grow back, surgery is so drastic”. They had a point – a shorter cut could have taken the focus away from the forehead, giving the hairline chance to grow back. In Lock’s case this could have happened so surgery definitely wasn’t needed. However, that’s not to say hair transplants can’t be a good option for those who really do need them.

What alternative could Lock have opted for?

As Lock’s receding hairline was only likely a temporary issue, there were some alternative, less drastic treatments he could have opted for. SMP could have been a much better option. One of our favourite sites, Futurism, has been reflecting on the recent wave of "McDonalds french fries cure baldness" stories. We thought we would share their thoughts.

 

Mea Culpa!

We will put our hands up on this. We ran the story ourselves. A team in Japan had used a chemical that McDonald's use to cook their french fries as an essential part of their process, a process which ultimately resulted in mice growing hair. We like to think that our article framed it well, that the chemical was being used in a very specific way to generate the hair follicle germs (HFG's) they then use to implant the mice with hair sprouting properties.

The Futurism Point Of View

Like Futurism we couldn't help but notice that by the time the story hit the mainstream it had morphed, the explanation of the chemistry that underpinned was largely left out and it had become simply become "McDonalds french fries cure baldness." Futurism wanted to point out that the chemical is also used in nail polish and sunscreen... but nobody has yet suggested that either of these popular products might be beneficial for hair loss sufferers.

The Truth

The fact is that the chemical in question, dimethylpolysiloxane, is added to the oil they cook the french fries in to stop it foaming. It serves different purposes in different products but the researchers in Japan found it was an ideal compost, if you like, to grow HFG's... spread a little on the bottom of a petri dish, add stem cells, and produce HFG's in quantities never before achieved. It becomes a publishable piece of work when they implanted the aforementioned stem cells into mice which sprouted hair.

There are a couple of burning questions we will all have. How long,  assuming everything between here and there goes well, before we might see a product made for human use will be the main one. Futurism, see their original article here, make an educated guess of around a decade on that... so let's not get overexcited. Eating McDonald french fries definitely won't do it. Which takes us to our second question, how do they cook their french fries in dimethylpolysiloxane and it not appear in the ingredients. What else goes into that oil? One last observation on the Futurism article, in their closing advice was, for now, to stick to the "wigs, plugs, and micropigmentation..." Getting Her Head Around The Role

It gave her pause for thought, that moment when she realised she was going to have to shave her head for her dream role as Okoye. Okoye leads the all-female, all bald, Wakandan Special Forces known as the "Dora Milaje." According to the Marvel database, the team is selected from every Wakandan tribe taking their best and forming both a formidable security team as well as a pool from which the unmarried King can select a bride.

The Day Of The Shave

Gurira, when asked to reflect on the transformation, shared the experience. "It was amazing the idea of the Dora Milaje, the concept of them, and then to see them come to life, and then these outstanding women who I started training with one by one. Like I was the first one to get my head shaved and in theory it sounded amazing. Then the day came and we're doing it today and I was like, "Today?" Then it happened. Then you go into the restroom to wash your hands and you look up and you're like, "What the?" So that took a few days, and then all the girls start coming in. We''d all been balded, one by one. Everybody had their caps on. Then the pride started to grow."

A Strong Statement

Gurira's character, Okoye, at a special moment in the film for us, is wearing a wig as a disguise during one of the most spectacular fight scenes of a movie stuffed to the gills with the spectacular. Okoye, in the middle of the scene, complains about having to wear the wig and discards it. Like any self-respecting Hollywood blockbuster there is no shortage of quote and comment being generated. Our runaway favourite quote takes us back to Gurira and our favourite subject. She said, speaking about the moment in the film where Okoye sheds the wig, "The beauty of how director and co-writer Ryan Coogler wrote that moment, I love that moment where she doesn't want a wig. She doesn't want to cover up. This is her joy and her pride, in walking with that bald head, with that tattoo on it. I was like, it's so subsversive, and it's so subversive in the right way to say that's not necessarily beauty. You don't have to have hair to be beautiful."

Taking The Shine Off

Head shine. It is one of those things isn't it? As a balding man you will have been subjected to the "classic" joke of a so-called friend pretending to be blinded by the reflection of bright lights off your scalp. A joke that has presumably been doing the rounds since the development of electric light, and maybe a lot longer. For HIS Hair Clinic clients taking the shine away can become, for some, a real focus. Particularly in the early days following treatment, while they are getting used to having a new hairline, and possibly stressing about whether or not all those family, friends and co-workers are colluding in a pretence of not noticing. After a while, those concerns subside as their confidence grows. For a few, what remains are relatively trifling concerns about specific situations. For example, someone who works under bright lights can become quite fixated on how the 2D nature of SMP reflects the light when compared to a natural buzz cut full head of hair. In fact, when shaved as close as the SMP represents that natural head of buzz cut hair will reflect light in the exactly the same way... but we understand why these clients want to reduce this effect. So here we offer some of the collected wisdom gathered from our forum members contributions.

Stop That Shine

These solutions are offered in no particular order, all have their fans and some experimentation might be required to find which works best for you. Let's start by recognising that the big industry players will all sell you products that contain "anti-shine" properties, usually in the form of cleansers. Here are a couple that have been recommended by our members. Anthony Logistics For Men - Uses silicon dioxide to diffuse the light apparently. Jack Black - All Day Oil-Control Lotion - Loved by some and a Mens Health Award Winner for best oil control moisturiser. Matte For Men - Their "Complete Head Care Lotion" is also offers SPF25 sun protection.. a serious consideration for bald men everywhere. Kyoku Men Oil Control Lotion - We are not huge fans of pseudo science, and this product comes with a big dose... they call it "oil lifting technology." This does have some big fans however and so makes our list. Milk of Magnesia - Moving into some more everyday, and extremely cheap, solutions for shine we offer M0M. Quickly applied throughout the day many swear by it. Diatomaceous Earth - A new one to us until a highly respected forum member, Bald Ego, brought it to our attention. This remarkable, naturally occurring, sedimentary rock crumbles to a fine white powder with interesting properties. Mainly silicon, which is the base for most anti-shine products, it should be on your list to check out.

According to the Daily Star Online, Prince Harry will be wearing a wig on his wedding to Meghan Markle later this year. The news comes after photos of the Prince were scrutinised late last year, showing his significant hair loss. With claims he has had a wig tailored to wear on his big day, could the publicity have affected the royal’s confidence?

Could the rumours be true?

Reading the Daily Star Online story certainly makes it sound credible, but let’s face it – you can’t believe everything you read! According to reports, Harry has had a £500 wig made by Bristol based company “Hair4All”. It’s now said to have been delivered to Clarence House in time for the big day, the residence of his father Prince Charles. It’s claimed the royal wants to look his best for Meghan and the wig company states they couldn’t “sit back and do nothing” so they sent Harry a system. The story could be true, but we’ll have to wait and see until the wedding. Of course, wigs aren’t the only way Harry could choose to cover up his balding patch.

What other options does the Prince have?

Wigs can prove useful and when made correctly, they can look natural. However, there are actually several cover-up options which are a lot more effective. Harry could follow in his big brother’s footsteps, choosing to get a buzzcut, known for its thickening effects. Prince William looks totally different with the new cut and it’s really taken focus away from his baldness. Another option is SMP. This tattoo procedure aims to shade the scalp, giving it a shaved style. A skilled practitioner inserts very small pigments of ink, matching the natural colour of the hair for best results. The inks are designed to last for years, and it’s a look which requires virtually zero maintenance.  It's also a great option for lowering the glare of a shiny scalp under bright lighting and reducing the contrast between skin and hair, effectively adding the illusion of volume. Overall, it does seem unlikely the Prince will be sporting a £500 wig on his big day but he might want to bear in mind there are other options.

Trevor Sorbie MBE is possibly the UK's best known hairdresser. Back in 2004 he set up a charity which helps women suffering from medical hair loss. We look closer.

 

Trevor Sorbie MBE

Trevor Sorbie started cutting hair as an apprentice at the age of 15 at his fathers barber shop, back when you could still leave school at 15. He never looked back. Trevor joined Vidal Sassoon as a stylist in 1972 and was to become artistic director within a year. As one of the new wave of British cutting edge hair stylists that included his employer Vidal Sassoon and Nicky Clarke to name a couple, Trevor would go on to achieve worldwide fame through his talent and creative flair. In a stellar career he was credited with inventing "the Wedge" and won British hairdresser of the year no less than four times. He developed his own range of products and opened a string of salons under his own name.

A New Charitable Direction

In 2004 Trevor threw himself into charity work. Quitting his salons to focus on a charity he set up, MyNewHair, to help women suffering from hair loss associated either with cancer or through other medical reasons, alopecia areata for example. His charity would train hairdressers up and down the country to sympathetically cut wigs for these women. The result is that hospitals, when discharging women in need of their help, will refer them to a local hairdresser for support.

Kay's Story

Kay Fisher, from Sunderland, had suffered from alopecia from the age of 9. She would endure many attempts to treat her condition, up to and including steroid injections. Predictably, nothing worked and Kay is now a mum of one having lost almost all her hair. She was referred to My New Hair by her local hospital and for the last ten years she has been visiting Tribeca Hair Design in Tyne & Wear every two or three weeks. Kay has shared her story with the local press and is hoping to serve as an inspiration for other women, by demonstrating that there is a path back to self-confidence. There’s a lot of myths surrounding hair loss and its causes. One which has been doing the rounds for some time is that over-washing can cause the hair to start shedding. With all of the conflicting advice out there, it’s difficult to know what’s true and what isn’t. So, to help, here we’ll clear up the truth about whether the way you wash your hair can cause permanent damage.

Can over-washing cause hair loss?

According to experts, over-washing will not lead to excess shedding. In fact, some even argue it’s not possible to over-wash your hair as it should be washed daily anyway. So, where did the notion that over-washing can lead to hair loss come from? The logic behind the argument that over-washing can cause shedding, is that it strips the hair of its natural oils. However, this isn’t actually the case. In fact, washing the hair daily, or at least every other day, is considered essential for the hair’s health. This is because throughout the day, all kinds of pollutants attach themselves to the hair, and its natural oils also start to build up. Unless these pollutants and excess oils are washed out of the hair, they could potentially block the hair follicles. It’s this which can contribute to shedding. However, whilst over-washing isn’t likely to result in shedding, the way you wash your hair might.

Avoiding washing-related hair loss

Although rare, it is possible to damage the hair through the way you wash it. In winter, extra care should be taken to prevent potential damage. Hot showers for example, can really dry the hair out, making it brittle. So, lukewarm water should be used throughout the colder, winter months, rather than hot water.  Also frequent vigorous drying using a towel could potentially lead to traction alopecia, along with potential heat damage from constant blow drying and styling You’ll also want to treat your scalp with natural oils if it dries out. A dry scalp can loosen the hair’s follicles, leading to hair loss and damage. So, keeping it well moisturised is highly recommended.

Every dollar donated to CureSearch is special to us, but sometimes the stories behind the dollar not only represent a desire to help cure cancer, but also acts as a memorial to those who have gone before. We sat down with grandparents Dean and Diane Schafer who were moved by their granddaughter, Madison, and vowed to make a difference.

As a 20-month old, Madison (Maddie) Star was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive cancerous brain tumor. Dean and Diane stood by her side as she fought the cancer for more than three years. It was a life-changing experience for these grandparents who ultimately lost Madison to cancer. Here is what they had to say about their cancer journey:

Tell us about Madison Star Schafer

Maddie had the deepest blue eyes and amazing contagious smile! She was always happy, even through all her treatments. Maddie loved the water and would love to go with her Popop (Dean) from one side of our pool to the other in his arms. She was always so sweet when her Grammy (Diane) wanted to have a photo shoot with her and her brother, Colin.

What was the family’s reaction to her diagnosis?

We will never forget the moment we were told Maddie had a tumor on her brain… we were in shock, angry, and full of “why” and “how” questions. How could a seemingly healthy, beautiful 18-month old child be so sick? The words ‘cancer’ and ‘baby’ should never be in the same sentence.

What has Madison’s cancer journey taught you?

Maddie’s cancer journey has given us a greater appreciation of the precious gift of life. Her legacy is one of strength and perseverance, her parents and doctors never gave up and neither did Maddie. Our son, Chris, and daughter-in-law, Susie, gave everything of themselves for the welfare of their daughter.

Maddie eventually lost her sight and ability to talk due to the cancer and its treatment, but she never lost her smiles, giggles and taught us to not lose hope.

What do you wish the general public knew about childhood cancer?

Children’s cancer research is the least funded age group for cancer research. More than 40,000 kids are in cancer treatment each year. In the last 20 years, only four cancer treatments have been specifically developed and approved for children. One out of eight children with cancer will not survive. These statistics are not acceptable. CureSearch is raising funds for research, clinical trials and resources for families to help improve these statistics.

Why do you choose to support CureSearch?

We started supporting CureSearch when we read that their focus was research for CHILDREN’S cancer and most of the donations go toward research and not administrative fees.

We were motivated to join CureSearch Superheroes Unite! walks to support Maddie’s parents and to help physically support other parents going through the same thing as we were. It helped us realize we were not alone in this battle. We walked in our first CureSearch event in the spring of 2011 as team leaders and have been involved ever since.

We are leaving a legacy gift in honor of our granddaughter Madison that will have a long-term effect of finding cures and treatments that might save the lives of other children with cancer. This is a gift that will keep on giving long after we are gone.

What is your hope for the future of childhood cancer?

We hope to see better funding at all levels of private and public sectors. We would like to see research and government working as one to put an end to all cancer and especially for our children. We would like to hear one day that children’s cancer research is the best funded.

Why is CureSearch and childhood cancer research important to you?

Childhood cancer research is important in order to give every child a chance at a full and healthy life. Over the last 30 years, great discoveries have been made and that is so exciting, but more can be done to help the most severe types of children cancer. No parents in the future should have to hear “your child has cancer.”

Is there anything else you’d like to share about Madison, your journey or advice to impart to other grandparents whose grandchild is battling cancer?

Madison had a wonderful team of doctors, but in the end, they spoke the words you never want to hear, “there is nothing more we can do.” The parents need the love and support of the grandparents and family members and friends. Facebook and social media was actually a network of support to help spread the word of this traumatic disease. Cherish every moment you have with your children and grandchildren and know you are not alone in this fight.

A Vexed Question

Just what is the state of President Trump's hair has been a question kicking around since his days hosting the US version of The Apprentice put him in the homes of millions of Americans on a regular basis. Over the years there has been a lot of speculation, which has gone into overdrive since he became commander in chief. With some insight provided by his nearest and dearest, along with some medical history, a vague picture emerges maybe. Our thanks go out to Cheatsheet for putting together a full list of the possibilities and combinations that  just might help explain what on earth we are all looking at.

1: Microcylinder Intervention

Which reads like miniature hair extensions that attach to individual hair to restore body and shape. It makes the list because the provider was located inside Trump Tower.

2: Transplant

Yeah well.

3: Scalp Reduction

In the recent "Fire and Fury" book it is alleged that Trump's daughter explained to others that her father had undergone the surgical hair loss procedure where scalp with hair is stretched. Ugh.

4: Toupee

We believe that industry prefers the term hair system these days. We saw Trump allow an interviewer to muss his hair... which he surely would never have done had he been wearing a system.

5: Propecia

Trump's own personal doctor, for a long time, was widely reported to have said that Trump takes a small daily dose of one of the two FDA approved drugs for hair loss, finasteride. Marketed under the brand name Propecia in the US.

6: Head and Shoulders

Yep. On the list because in an interview given to Rolling Stone magazine, back when he was hosting Celebrity Apprentice and at the height of his powers with that show, Trump said: "OK, what I do is wash it with Head & Shoulders. I don't dry it though. I let it dry by itself. It takes about an hour." Pretty sure if he stood by an open window that process could be reduced to a few minutes.

7: Comb-over

He has described his elaborate stylings as being achieved with a comb, which he said was "... not really a comb-over, its sort of a little bit forward and back." So there you have it. Clear as mud.

8: CHI Helmet Head hairspray

This extra firm hairspray is, according to an article in Glamour, the sort of magazine we never look in, a "humidity-resistant fast drying" spray. The same article  apparently reported a Miss Universe pageant worker as saying "Donald loved the smell." Not exactly conclusive we think.

9: Just For Men hair dye

The list ends with this convincing sounding reason for that strange colour. It seems Ivanka has confided that he is too impatient to leave the dye on for long enough to achieve the correct shade.
