A Refreshing Take On Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 11:24

In an interesting article we found a young man with a refreshingly upbeat take on his own hair loss.

Hair Loss Among Young Men

A study, from the website of the US National Library of Health, based on over a thousand randomly selected men between the ages of 30 and 50, found that, of the 394 men that were aged 35 or younger, 39.2% of them were already experiencing significant genetic hair loss. Some estimates put the figure much higher and the American Hair Loss Association put it at two thirds. Another study, by the American Society of Dermotalogic Study, observed some 16% of men aged 18-29 had experienced hair loss. That is one in six men. Millions. Tens of millions in fact. Whichever figure you take it represents a significant proportion of the age group. While that figure reduces as you move down to the younger end of the scale it still means that there are millions of young men, by which we mean under 25 (though we are specifically talking about their being young in terms of the stage of the hair loss), experiencing it. A proportion of them will in turn be struggling to cope with the experience.

The Collegian

Hillsdale College is a private, conservative and Christian college in Michigan. We found an article written by Mark Naida in their college magazine, The Collegian. The author offers us his own slant on the whole thing at the outset with his quote: "If you are balding, that is a gift, because God is reminding you that you are getting uglier and you are going to die soon." For his article he spoke to a few students around campus, all of them experiencing hair loss, to get their take. One particularly struck us as a great example of a young man living with his baldness. Senior Daniel Cody said he had realised he had a problem with hair loss, and a concept of what the future held, as early as his middle years of high school. When he asked his girlfriend out on their first date he laid the bare facts out for her: "I gotta warn you. I am gonna be bald. And soon. By the time law school is over, it is all going to be gone." He also made a case for the single significant benefit, as he sees it, of going bald young: "It is a mercy to lose your hair when you are young, or at least know you will." He went on: "The guys who baldness really affects are the guys who had really great hair when they were young.... they are all, 'I am going to die someday, blah blah blah.' "

HIS Hair Clinic

Young Mr Cody raised a smile for us here at HIS HQ, pre-warning a possible girlfriend is surely the ultimate in acceptance of your own hair loss. At the same time this is not for everyone, indeed one of the other contributors is hard at it with the minoxidil. Seems Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) has yet to make it's way onto campus... maybe when it does they, Daniel Cody apart, can move on with their young lives. Could Cockroaches Be The Answer To Hair Loss?

Unknown Reply 06:34

Cockroaches have been used in Chinese medicine for some time, but new work suggests they might help with hair loss. We look closer.

Regeneration

Humans have always admired the ability of particular animals to repair themselves. Lizards that can regrow lost tails. Crocodiles that can regrow limbs. Some invertebrates are capable of extraordinary feats of regeneration... Sea Cucumbers are apparently capable of regrowing everything up to and including their heads. They are indeed impressive feats of biology and worthy of wonder, along with no small amount of envy from a species unable to regenerate any body part. Cockroaches are high on the list of species that possess impressive regenerative powers, and more. Their ability to ingest and survive poisons that would slay anything else is impressive. But it is their physical powers of recovery that stand out, cut off it's head and you will kill it but it's body will wander around for another few days. Cut off it's legs or antennae and it will recover completely in a matter of days to pretty much it's original condition.

Hair Loss Research

Advances in science are leading to much improved understandings of how these processes work. The ultimate goal being that through gene editing we might be able to imbue humans with some of these ultra desirable properties. Having used cockroaches in traditional Chinese medicine for decades, where extracts are used to treat oral and gastric ulcers, scientists at the wonderfully named Institute of Insect Science and Technology, at the equally well monikered South China Normal University (we wonder what the other Universities in town are called), believe that cockroach extracts might be used for beauty masks and treating hair loss in the future.

Reasons To Be Optimistic

Li Sheng, director of the Institute, is optimistic that cockroaches can make a serious contribution. He has said that the factor in the body of cockroaches that enable them to heal and regenerate might work for humans.

HIS Hair Clinic

If anybody is going to work out how to translate those miraculous healing properties, possessed by cockroaches, into a treatment for humans, it is surely going to come from the Institute of Insect Science and Technology. Certainly the theory makes sense, but we are aware that parallel research on crocodiles investigating their ability to survive eating meat that would kill anything else, still has a long way to go before it can be made useful to humans. Could Easter eggs be good for your hair

Unknown Reply 02:09
easter egg hair lossDark chocolate is renowned for its health benefits when eaten in small quantities. However, one of its most exciting side effects is its potential to promote hair growth. Not only that, but chocolate is also said to add shine to the hair. So, does this mean if we eat chocolate, our hair will benefit? Below, we’ll look at the link between chocolate and healthy hair and whether it can really prevent hair loss.

How does chocolate benefit the hair?

According to some experts, adding unsweetened dark chocolate to yoghurt and honey and mixing it into a hair mask can help to add plenty of shine to your locks. After leaving the mixture on for one hour wrapped in plastic film, simply wash it off with cold water and you should instantly see your hair is much shinier than it was before. It’s also said that eating a little dark chocolate every day will help to boost blood flow and oxygen within the scalp, promoting new hair growth. This is all said to be thanks to its zinc, copper and iron mineral content.

Is it a good hair loss solution?

As exciting as this news is, unfortunately it’s highly unlikely to do much for your hair. Unless you were to cut most other foods out and mainly eat chocolate, your hair isn’t really going to benefit. Also, cutting other foods out of the diet could actually trigger hair loss due to nutrient deficiency. So, eating one or two pieces of dark chocolate each day could provide great health benefits, but it’s definitely not the best hair loss solution. There’s all kinds of effective clinically proven treatments out there these days. You’d be much better off eating a healthy, balanced diet and seeking advice from a hair specialist about your hair loss worries.

Four hair “myths” that are actually true

Unknown Reply 08:30
hairl loss mythsSometimes it's hard to distinguish fact from fiction when it comes to hair loss. We discuss some of the most common misunderstandings here.
  1. Hair extensions can cause hair loss. It may sound like a myth but actually traction alopecia is surprisingly common where the follicles are placed under stress.  Even tight pony tails and braids can result in temporary and sometimes even permanent damage.  Naomi Campbell has already testified to the damage years of fashion shoots have done to her hair.
  2. Diet doesn’t affect hair loss. Actually, diet is important.  Your hair, like your skin is a barometer of your general well-being.  If your body is deficient in vitamins or minerals then it could actually help precipitate hair loss. It certainly won’t help if your nutrition is poor and your’ already predisposed genetically or otherwise to thinning.
  3. My Dad was bald so It’s inevitable I will be too. Whilst there is an increased chance of your father passing on the bald gene to you it’s certainly not inevitable.  Genetic make up comes from both parents and hair loss can skip generations.
  4. Stress can cause hair loss. Stress can actually cause hair loss in two ways.  Chronic stress has been shown in recent studies to be a contributory factor and accelerate androgenic alopecia but also a sudden stressful incident can cause hair loss sometimes all over the body.  Fortunately both stress conditions are normally temporary but not always.
  5. I’m a man and I’m losing my hair. There’s nothing I can do.  Whilst there’s no cure for the most common cause of hair loss in men, androgenic alopecia, there are a number of treatments.  Transplants have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years and medications like Minoxidil and Finasteride have proven their worth in clinical trials at holding hair loss at bay.  There’s also a range of new treatments including Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) which can really tackle the onset of baldness.

Trump gives thumbs up to facial hair

Unknown Reply 01:25
trump facial hairAn opinion piece in the New York Times this week by Christopher Oldstone-Moore muses about the appointment of John Bolton to National security advisor.  The tongue in cheek piece draws attention to Bolton’s Bushy moustache and he doesn’t conform to Donald Trump’s normal preference for appointees from “central casting”.

100 years of American history and facial hair

The article takes a trip through 100 years of American history and facial hair and draws some broad conclusions.  Focusing on Hollyood stars from the golden age  and politicians from the both sides of the spectrum, it concludes that facial hair is a sign of manliness, aggression and also impulsiveness.  These  are, of course the defining traits of Trump himself so the author concludes that maybe he’s mentally separated his aesthetic dislike of facial hair from the “pugnacious manliness” it represents.  He even goes so far as to suggest that the President may take to wearing one himself.

How to exude “pugnacious manliness”

So, what if you want to exude “pugnacious manliness” but struggle to grow a beard?  Well there’s some good news because beard transplants are on the up.  The procedure works just like a regular hair transplant but instead of migrating follicles to the top of  your head your face becomes the recipient.  It’s normally very successful and the great news is you can have exactly the style you want unlike the random tufty growth that many of us have to put up with.  Some US surgeons are reporting that, whereas 10 years ago they were maybe doing 4 or 5 beard transplants a year they’re now doing similar numbers every week.  It’s clear no longer such a niche requirement. If you want to find out more about beard transplants then you can call one of our team of friendly experts in confidence on or you can fill in the form on the right.

FDA investigate Monat hair care products

Unknown Reply 01:00
FDA investigation hair lossThe latest bad news to hit the US hair industry is an FDA (Food and Drug Administration) investigation into the trendy Monat hair care company. Nearly 200 women have raised complaints about the products which claim to promise “long, fuller, stronger” hair.

Class action lawsuit against Monat

A customer of the product, Dana Sohovich has launched a class action lawsuit against the company claiming that, far from achieving the promised results the products have caused her to lose hair and left her with bald patches.  She’s not alone it would seem either as nearly 200 other women have reported similarly adverse reports.  Those who complained to the company were apparently told initially that this was normal and part of the detox process, although it seems that’s no longer proffered as a reason. At this stage the FDA haven’t reached a conclusion and are still in the investigation phase.  Their latest statement asks for anyone else who may be experiencing problems with the product to get in contact.

Wen settled for $26,250,000

It’s less than a year since Wen Hair Care Products settled a class action for a total of $26,250,000 with its customers who raised similar complaints about their products. (That means $20,000 for up to 6 million people). Interestingly the initial complaint there was raised by only 127 customers so the Monat investigation could result in an expensive outcome.  The company still disputes that its products were responsible for the various problems its customers reported but the settlement means we’ll probably never get a clear picture. As a general rule it’s probably best to avoid any products that claim to have miraculous benefits.  If you’re concerned about hair loss then speak to your GP or an independent hair loss clinic.  There are a number of clinically proven treatments that do work but be wary of buying online, particularly imported products.

Some reasons you might be losing it.

Unknown Reply 00:35
hair lossIt’s quite normal to shed up to 100 hairs a day but what if you’re losing more than that?  Well the first thing is DON’T PANIC.  By the time they reach 30 up to 80% of all men are showing some signs of hair loss so it is perfectly normal.  Also, more often than not it can be treated if you seek out some expert advice.  Here we list a few of the reasons you might be losing your hair:
  1. Either a single stressful event or a build up of chronic stress over time can both have detrimental effects on your hair.  Whilst it may not be easy to simply remove all the stresses of modern living this could be the wake up call to make some lifestyle changes.  Men’s yoga is becoming quite popular these days.
  2. Another result of modern living can be too many skipped meals and too much junk food.  It goes without saying that this is bad for you general health.  Your hair and skin are like a barometer of well being so missing out on essential vitamins and minerals will often result in some hair loss
  3. Traction alopecia. Less common in men but if you’ve got a longer style and tie it up in a man bun or a pony tail be aware that the stress this puts on the roots can cause permanent damage.
  4. Androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness. This really is the most common cause of hair loss and there’s no cure. The good news is you can treat it with a variety of things.  Transplants and medications are helpful if you’ve caught it early enough and SMP is a great new treatment that can create the impression of volume or a crew cut on a completely bald head.

Hair loss tips for the Easter break

Unknown Reply 10:26
easter hair lossAs we approach the Easter holidays maybe you’ve got a bit of time off.  Here’s a few things you can do to make the most of the break to give you and your hair a rest.
  1. Watch the diet. Actually, dark chocolate can be good for your hair but you can’t live on Easter eggs alone.  A couple of days away from your normal routine might give you chance to cut out on the fast food and ready meals and concentrate on healthier options with the minerals and vitamins needed for your general health which will also impact on your hair.
  2. Consider a restyle. Easter and spring time are all about renewal so maybe it’s time to ditch last decade’s style and go for something more contemporary.  If your hair’s getting a little on the thin side then stop trying to hide it and go with a sharper, shorter look.  SMP might be a great option if you’re getting a little thin on top.
  3. Don’t spend all your time off work partying. Alcohol and late nights will wreak havoc with your hair, not to mention your general well being if taken to excess.  Like most things in life moderation is the key.
  4. If you gave up smoking for Lent - stick with it. If you’ve stopped smoking for 40+ days then you’re no longer chemically addicted.  It goes without saying that smoking has some pretty awful consequences but it’s also bad for your skin and hair and is another of the primary causes of hair loss because of the toxins and the drying effect on the follicles.
Finally, it’s not all about giving stuff up.  Relax and enjoy yourself. Catch up with family and friends; go to the beach or just enjoy a few long walks in the country. Stress is a growing cause of hair loss.  As our lives get busier and relaxation time becomes more precious you’ve really got to make the most of down time.  Studies in China have indicated that hair loss is becoming an epidemic and that’s being put down in large parts to stress.  Happy Easter!

Jilted at the altar for being bald

Unknown Reply 08:06
groom baldImagine being turned down at the altar by your fianceĂ© because she discovered that you were bald. It happened to one unfortunate neurosurgeon from New Delhi last month when he took off his headpiece during the ceremony. It was an arranged marriage and the couple had never met before so the baldness could have been one amongst a number of reasons why the bride to be got cold feet.  As far as the unlucky groom goes he could have tried a couple of options to cover his lack of hair for the big day:

Some ways to tackle baldness

  1. Hair transplant- it might have been too late for this particular option. Transplants have come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of decades but their success does depend on having enough donor hair left at the back and sides to migrate to the bald patch.
  2. Hair system – otherwise known as a wig this might have saved his blushes on the big day but ultimately it can require a lot of maintenance and there’s always the risk of it coming adrift in high winds, swimming etc.
  3. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP). This might have been a better solution for the unfortunate surgeon.  An increasingly popular treatment amongst men, SMP creates the illusion of a lifelike 3d layered buzz cut.  It’s never going to replace long flowing locks but it does at least convey the impression of choice of hair style, rather victim of hair loss.  It’s also virtually zero maintenance.

Relatively happy ending

In the end it didn’t work out too badly for the surgeon.  Rather than return home empty handed he talked to the local village council and they hastily arranged another marriage for him with the daughter of a vegetable seller a couple of days later.  Maybe he kept his headpiece on during that ceremony.

Korean Research Team Predict Hair Loss Cure

Unknown Reply 09:31

Exciting news out of South Korea where a team have been working with a protein that they tell us holds promise as a hair loss cure.

Yonsei University

Who we hear you cry! For the uninformed we can tell you that Yonsei is one of Korea's oldest universities, established in 1885... the first year that Charles Down published his Dow Jones Industrial Average and the year that AT&T were incorporated in New York as a subsidiary of the American Bell Telephone Company. Today it is considered Korea's most prestigious university so news of a study claiming great success for a hair loss treatment is to be taken seriously, particularly when the lead declares a product is in the pipeline.

Hairy Mice

It is an essential step on the road to a hair loss treatment, making bald mice hairy again and proving you understand exactly how you did it, and that there were no negative side effects, are all necessary if you are to proceed to trying to make people hairier. The problem for avid followers of these stories is that often it can be difficult to gauge the level of success and how it might translate to humans. Then there is the issue of time, it can take months and years to progress to a human treatment, through a series of clinical trials where everything has to go right and arrive at a new systemic treatment.

A New Dawn?

Professor Kang-Yell Choi, who led the research, is exceptionally bullish about their prospects. His team created a protein, a "CXXC-type zinc finger protein 5," that disrupts a cellular process around follicle development and healing. They tested their protein on mice over 28 days and hey presto... hairy mice. The team also discovered that a chemical, valproic acid, was an effective catalyst for their protein. In the words of Professor Choi; "We have found a protein that controls the hair growth and developed a new substance that promotes  hair regeneration by controlling the function of the protein." He went on; "We expect that the newly developed substance will contribute to the development of a drug that not only treats hair loss but also regenerate damaged skin tissues."

HIS Hair Clinic

While this reads like great news we are aware that, as is often the case, we just do not know how hairy those mice got. Just the same, Professor Choi is unusually strident in his forecast for success... hopefully that is because he is extremely confident and not because he is struggling to get funding for the next phase. We watch with interest. If you would like to discuss your hair loss situation with one of our team of friendly experts simply complete the contact form at the side of this page. Could omega 3 be the answer to hair loss?

Unknown Reply 01:51
omega 3Omega 3, found in fish oil has long been seen as a health supplement.  If you read the list of disorders it can apparently tackle it does indeed seem like a truly amazing thing.  According to Albawaba It can be used to treat heart disease, depression, hypertension, ADHD and arthritis.  It doesn’t stop there though as it can also apparently help with weight loss, fertility, pregnancy and now you can add hair loss to the list.

How does omega 3 work?

One of the leading hair product manufacturers in India, Dabur Amla have just launched a new shampoo containing Omega 3, claiming it will  “strengthen hair strands from roots to tips and resist breakage and fallout”.  The claim rests on a few different factors.  Apparently it will help balance hormones which can be a cause of hair loss and it will also reduce inflammation in hair follicles as well as add protein.  The company also refers to a 2015 study by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology which reported nearly 90% of the 120 female participants seeing an improvement in the condition of their hair and reduction in shedding.

It’s not a panacea

The fact of the matter though is that Omega 3 isn’t generally recommended as a hair loss treatment.  Like most dietary supplements it’s probably good for your general health and well being which, in turn benefits your hair but it’s not a panacea. If you’re suffering from hair loss the best thing you can do is turn to a GP or a specialist hair loss clinic who’ll be able to advise on proven clinical treatments that would be best suited to your particular condition.  These might range from medications like minoxidil and finasteride to the increasingly popular scalp micropigmentation.  Whilst fish oil may not exactly be snake oil it’s unlikely to solve a hair loss condition on its own.

Baldness Signifies Height Strength and Dominance

Unknown Reply 09:14

We look back at a 2012 study which researched how men with shaved or bald heads were perceived and consider the implications for Scalp Micropigmentation wearers.

Perceptions

We are all familiar with how important first impressions are, that instant set of judgements we all subconsciously make. We all understand that things like what people wear and how they apply make-up will also force impressions. There are broader truths that have been proven in previous studies, that tall people earn more money than their shorter colleagues, or that executives who look powerful tend to be the bosses of more profitable companies. But there are also those subliminal reactions, how we unwittingly apply them in the real world makes a difference too... In 1996 one remarkable study showed that it was possible to predict, based on their graduation photos from West Point and looking for dominant features, who would rise to the rank of General 20 years later. This happens in an environment which you might think of as the ultimate meritocracy, where it would talent and ability that sees you rise to the top... not simply a jutting jawline and an intense look. But what about hair loss? Without doubt it can be a devastating discovery, to realise you are losing your hair. It can seriously affect your self-confidence, but should it?

How Are Bald Heads Viewed?

It seems a strange question for a formal research study, maybe because it feels like a question we all know the answer to. While there have been some studies in the past the 2012 research asked original questions and threw up some interesting results. The research team asked 3 questions aimed at establishing exactly how the same men were perceived with hair, with thinning hair, and with a shaved head. The shaved head turned out to be perceived as taller, stronger and more dominant. Excellent news we thought. Even balanced against being seen as 4 years older than their equivalent picture with hair, and being seen as slightly less attractive, we considered that a fair trade.

HIS Hair Clinic

We found a great quote from 1987, attributed to a man called Synott. He said of men who shave their heads: "They reject an extremely powerful and popular symbol of age and death. Perhaps this choice expresses a  transcendence of conventional views of masculinity and life and thus these individuals become symbolically more alive and more virile." Synott seems to have perfectly analyzed the 2012 study over 20 years before it was conducted. Our take on it is that we have always seen that ramp in masculinity whenever a scalp micropigmentation (SMP) treatment is completed. But it is always good to have a peer reviewed published study support what you have been saying for years. Hair loss drug could reduce chance of heart attack

Unknown Reply 02:14
minoxidilWe’ve written about Minoxidil many times as a hair loss treatment.  Clinically proven minoxidil, along with finasteride are the two main compounds that can help stop hair loss in its tracks and can prove particularly effective when used in conjunction with other treatments such as a hair transplant.  Recent research published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology also suggested that Minoxidil could be a powerful drug in the battle to prevent heart attacks.

How minoxidil could prevent a heart attack

As humans age all body tissues start to stiffen due to the gradual loss of a protein called elastin which is only produced whilst the body is still in development.  This is particularly important in blood vessels.  As the protein diminishes so the arteries harden making the heart work harder to pump blood to the key organs like the brain alive.  The study seems to indicate that minoxidil actually replenishes some of the lost elastin which means a potential reduction in a number of conditions relating to hardened arteries including:
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Cognitive decline
  • Cardiac arrest

A potential downside of the drug

Whilst this could be great news for anyone who’s losing hair and has high blood pressure there is a potential downside.  If you’re suffering from low blood pressure or maybe it’s just at normal levels then there’s a possibility that it will speed up heart rate.  There are reports of palpitations, ringing in ears, dark circles under eyes etc. The key thing with minoxidil is that it is a medication and before you begin taking it you need expert advice.  We’d recommend speaking to your GP or call us (or use the form on the right) to book a free and confidential consultation with one of our team of friendly experts.

How to spot Androgenic Alopecia

Unknown Reply 02:24
alopeciaHair loss is something which for many men in inevitable, it is often due to androgenic alopecia – male pattern hair loss. It is estimated that by the age of thirty five, sixty percent of men will have experienced hair loss and thinning to some extent. This figure increases to eighty five percent amongst men who are fifty years old. Although an entirely normal part of the aging process, the initial glimpse of a receding hair line can affect the self-esteem of most men. Asides from hair transplant or wearing artificial hair, there isn’t much that you can do once hair is lose. However there are medications such as Minoxidil and Finasteride which can slow down hair loss and promote hair growth but both these approaches consider it key that you spot the early signs of male pattern baldness. Early symptoms of androgenic alopecia include;
  • Changes In The Hair Line
Male pattern baldness often presents with a receding hairline which forms a rounded ‘M’ shape initially. This can then resemble a ‘U’ shape as the middle point of the ‘M’ begins to recede further back. A receding hair line is easily noticeable and will be the first place that you will notice the hair loss yourself.
  • Thinning Hair On The Crown Of Your Head
Another typical and predictable symptom of male pattern baldness is thinning hair on the top of your head. You can ask someone to check for you or use a handheld mirror to check in another mirror as this symptom can be difficult to spot
  • Hair On Your Pillows, Clothes And Desk
Although a small amount of hair shedding is considered normal, if you are continuously finding hair on your pillow, clothes or your work desk then it is highly possible that you are developing androgenic alopecia
  • A Notable Difference In Photos

St Baldrick’s Day Celebrations Hit New Heights

Unknown Reply 09:54

St Baldricks Day was the idea of a child cancer charity, a day when thousands across the States shave their heads to raise much needed cash. We look closer.

St Baldricks Day

The St Baldricks Foundation is a charity dedicated to funding the research that could end childhood cancer. Cancer is the number one killer of children in the US and   In 1999 they decided to co-opt the Irish celebration of St Patricks day and on every March since they have promoted "St Baldricks Day". It is a day when events are held across America, at schools, college campuses, church halls, beer festivals... pretty much anywhere they can gather a few caring souls willing to sponsor people to get their heads shaved. It is a moving show of solidarity for those thousands of child cancer sufferers, for whom a bald head is a stigmatic emblem of their illness. Just as importantly it raises vitally needed cash, more every year, for research into childhood cancer, which currently receives a paltry 4% of the cancer research budget. Since 2005 St Baldricks have raised in excess of $250M, a fantastic sum. Though it pales next to the estimated $1B a year spent in the US by people fighting against their own hair loss.

Shout Out To Watchung Hills

We have watched over the years as the St Baldricks Day events have become ever more popular. This year was no exception and for the students, parents and teachers of Watchung Hills Regional High School in New Jersey it was to be the eighth anniversary of their inaugural St Baldricks Day... they have raised an amazing $154,664 over the years.  Each year the number of volunteers goes up and each year they raise more money. This year saw  no less than 20 students (including girls with great long hair) parents and members of the local community line up to be shaved, along with a very brave 11 teachers and members of staff, to raise over $30K. Our thanks go to the excellent Tapinto.net for bringing us their story and pictures of what was clearly a great day. You can see the original article by clicking here.

HIS Hair Clinic

This annual outpouring of affection and generosity always gives us a lift here at HIS HQ. To have watched the event, in a relatively short space of time, grow to it's current proportions has been amazing. Congratulations to all the St Baldricks Foundation on another great year. Trump and the Hair Theorists

Unknown Reply 00:59
trump hair lossIt’s never long before US President, Donald Trump, is back hitting the headlines. However, they're often focused on his hair as much as the political scene in Washington. After his medical assessment was made public, hair loss has been a popular topic of speculation surrounding Trump. Hair theorists from across the globe have been busy speculating about what’s underneath the President’s odd-shaped blonde locks. Could he really be completely bald underneath?

Breaking down the theories

There’s a surprising number of theories relating to Trump’s hair. One of the most common, is that he is in fact bald. Yep, that thick, odd blonde "do" is apparently a toupee with absolutely nothing underneath! While it’s an enticing theory, Trump has actually squashed this rumour by allowing people to take a close look, and feel, of his locks. Others claim his locks are a result of a scalp reduction, Microcylinder intervention, a hair transplant and even Head and Shoulders shampoo. Only the President himself knows the secret to his famous locks. However, it’s likely at least one of the theories is spot on.

Hair loss treatment options

These days, if you’re suffering from hair loss, there’s a wide range of treatment options available. Many have proven to be extremely effective and are used to treat a wide range of hair loss conditions. Those suffering with temporary hair loss conditions, can benefit from medications such as Finasteride or Minoxidil. Those suffering with more severe hair loss problems however, can benefit from more drastic and long-term treatments such as a hair transplant or SMP treatment. Before seeking out any type of treatment, it’s really important to have the cause of your hair loss diagnosed. Each condition requires a slightly different treatment approach. So, if you start a treatment without first understanding what’s causing the hair loss, you could find it actually makes the problem worse, not better.

Should you be considering PRP treatment?

Unknown Reply 06:40
PRPThere’s no denying that the past couple of years have been significant for the hair loss industry. There’s been superb breakthroughs in hair loss research, as well as improvements in new and existing treatments. By far one the strangest new additions to the industry is PRP treatment. Here, we’ll look at what PRP treatment actually is and whether it’s a good hair loss treatment option.

What is PRP treatment?

PRP is short for Platelet-Rich Plasma and it basically uses your own blood to encourage the hair to grow. It’s becoming quite a popular treatment throughout the US, and so far, has proven pretty effective. During the procedure, white blood cells found within the plasma are inserted into the affected areas of the scalp. The blood is typically taken from the patient’s arm, before being placed into a specially developed machine where it is spun to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. The whole process takes approximately 30 minutes. As the treatment uses your own cells, there’s very little chance your immune system will attack them. This means the risks of the treatment are pretty low. However, what you need to remember about this treatment is it is only temporary. If you want to maintain the results, you’ll need to continue having the treatment.

Is it right for you?

So, could PRP treatment be a good option for you? If you have a temporary hair loss condition, it could prove to be a safe and effective option. However, if your hair loss is triggered by a more long-term condition such as male pattern baldness, it’s probably not your best option. Long-term hair loss conditions require a more permanent solution such as SMP or a hair transplant. So, before deciding which treatment to undergo, it’s best to have the condition properly diagnosed. PRP treatment is a good option in some cases, but it’s certainly not ideal for everyone.

Gender equality and hair loss

Unknown Reply 04:05
gender hair lossAt one time, hair loss was largely associated with middle aged men. It was considered an unavoidable age-related issue which men had to suck up and deal with. However, these days the problem is known to affect a large number of both men and women. A new survey has highlighted while both men and women do suffer with hair loss, both sexes handle it in a totally different way. Here, we’ll look at the results of this survey and the lengths men and women are prepared to go to in order to resolve their hair loss worries.

What did the survey find?

The survey, carried out by Plus 94 Research, analysed results from 600 men aged 20-65 and 505 women over the age of 30. It discovered that almost 40% of men surveyed were already showing signs of hair loss. Meanwhile, over a third of the women surveyed also experienced hair loss. It revealed that single and divorced men were likely to spend more on their hair loss worries than married men. A third of the men aged between 36 and 55 also stated hair loss would have a negative impact on their social life. A quarter of those surveyed also feel losing their hair would affect their attractiveness. As for the women surveyed, 69% feel their hair plays a major role in their self-image, with a third believing that hair loss would affect the way their partner sees them. Surprisingly, half of the women surveyed said they would happily sacrifice a new wardrobe to solve their hair loss concerns. What really stood out however, was the amount of money both genders are willing to spend on hair loss solutions. Women were discovered to be willing to spend more than twice of what men were willing to spend for a solution. The survey was carried out on South African men and women, but definitely resonate Worldwide.

Treatment options available for male and female hair loss

It’s clear hair loss has a significant impact on the psychological wellbeing of both men and women. While both struggle to deal with the problem, there is help available. There are effective treatments available to both men and women these days, so there’s no need for anyone to suffer in silence. If you’re concerned about hair loss or hair thinning then don't hesitate to contact us to talk to one of our team of friendly experts for free and in confidence.

Terry Jenkins gets to the point about his hair loss

Unknown Reply 00:55
terry jenkinsDarts fans were shocked at the 2018 qualifiers, when former star Terry Jenkins returned as a PDPA Associate Member. Sporting a new, totally bald look, it didn’t take long for fans to start questioning what had led to his sudden hair loss. To clear up the confusion, Jenkins revealed his new bald locks were a result of a car accident the star suffered a year ago. The trauma from the accident led Jenkins to develop Telogen Effluvium, a temporary for of hair loss often brought on by stress. Here, you’ll discover more about this form of hair loss and the treatments available to solve it.

What is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen Effluvium is a temporary form of hair loss triggered by sudden or long-term chronic stress. The body’s reaction to the stress causes the hair to shed and the hair’s follicles to stop growing. This causes more of the hairs to enter the resting phase where they will eventually fall out altogether, usually within three months. The condition doesn’t always result in total baldness, but it can in severe cases. The good news is, once the stress has gone, the hairs cycle will usually return to normal and the hair will begin to grow back.

Is it treatable?

Obviously, any amount of hair shedding can be distressing even if it is only temporary. The good news is, there are treatments available which can help encourage the hair to grow back. Minoxidil is a great temporary hair loss treatment. It’s a topical solution which needs to be applied directly onto the scalp. Alternatively, there’s also a hair loss drug known as Finasteride which can prove extremely helpful in mild to moderate hair loss cases. For those who do go completely or almost completely bald, there’s also SMP which could be used to cover up the problem until the hair does grow back. To find out which treatment is best suited to you, it’s important to seek advice from a  a hair loss specialist.

Laser Finasteride Combination Hair Loss Treatment

Unknown Reply 11:20

It seems someone has got around to pre-treating the scalp with laser prior to finasteride application under laboratory conditions, we look closer.

Fractionated Laser

First developed in 2003 fractional laser treatment was proposed as a new method for treating skin that needed resurfacing. Suitable for clients suffering from wrinkles, acne chicken pox or transplant/surgery scars, it has also been used to treat freckles and other issues with pigmentation.

How It Works

Fractionated laser is different because it enables surgeons to treat thousands of tiny locations at once, importantly it leaves untouched healthy skin between the treatment areas which promotes swift healing of the treated areas. Typical recovery time from this type of treatment is 24 to 36 hours. The laser treatment itself is believed to enhance the properties of topical medicines by accelerating their effectiveness through increased blood supply to the "wound."

Laser/Finasteride Study

Combination therapies are increasingly common in hair loss clinics. So it should come as little surprise that someone has taken the time to investigate the potential upside in treating patients with laser followed by finasteride ... one of only two FDA approved hair loss medicines and maybe better known under the brand name Propecia. A Brazilian team took four androgenetic alopecia sufferers, that is four men with inherited baldness,  and treated them with a "non-ablative erbium glass fractional laser" prior to applying finasteride and some other growth factors (fibroplast growth factor; insulin-like growth factor; vascular endothelial growth factor and copper peptide). Each patient received a total of eight treatments. The team report that photographs taken 2 weeks after the course has finished showed improvement in hair regrowth and density with no significant side effects reported.

HIS Hair Clinic

We won't get too excited just yet. Not least because four patients is as small a study as we have ever read about. That said,  the underlying technology of fractional laser has definitely earned it's stripes in the field of skin repair, and the benefits (and risks) of finasteride are well known. So we will continue to monitor progress and report back with advances as and when we see them. Is There A Future For Synthetic Hair Transplants?

Unknown Reply 09:30

Hair transplants using synthetic hair have been around for a long time without making a real impression. Why is that? And are things about to change anytime soon?

Anyone For Hair Fibres?

You can see why the idea came about. Sparsely haired men turning up at transplant clinics woefully short of enough follicles to make a treatment successful, combined with a heartfelt desire on the part of the clinic not to turn away a wannabe client. So it was that some started out trying to insert hair that was made of something other than hair. This was the best part of 50 years ago and the choice for material was extremely limited, compared to today. Those used, polyester; polyacrylic; modacrylic, were at best unsuitable and caused issues. Clients complained of a range of negative reactions, sometimes months after treatment, that included inflammation and infections as well as scarring and damage to existing hair. Worse, many complained that the transplanted hairs (lets call them that) looked odd and made the client look like they were wearing a wig. In fact, so many problems were reported that the US FDA, not necessarily known for aggressive regulation, banned the use of synthetic hair in transplants back in 1983. They reviewed, following petitions by manufacturers, in 2017 but the situation remains unchanged and the products remained banned.

A New Approach

An Italian company called Medicap developed their own version of synthetic hairs called BioFibre and seem to be the leading player in the field. In 1996 they got CE approval for the use of their product on human scalps. Also in 1996 they got the same approval in Australia. The difference with the Medicap product, and the reason they were able to get the EU to revisit their rules, is that the hairs are biocompatible with the client's own skin.  There have been a couple of studies with patients reporting "satisfying results" though around 10% reported side effects - which, according to the report, were "easily controlled by either topical or systemic treatment within 8 to 10 days."

HIS Hair Clinic

We are yet to see the cost of a synthetic transplant but recognise their shortcomings, these fibres are exposed to the elements meaning damage and infection are a permanent possibility. Up to 20% of the fibres will need to be replaced each year because of this... something to be factored into the cost of ownership. It would seem, with the advance of technology, that synthetic hair might be about to come into the mainstream. We will continue to watch closely. Eat your way to healthy hair

Unknown Reply 01:50
eat your way to healthy hairIs it possible to eat your way to healthy hair? According to nutritionists, the answer is yes! By making just a few dietary changes, it’s apparently possible to prevent devastating hair loss. The key word here of course, is prevention. If you’re already suffering with hair loss or hair thinning, dietary changes are unlikely to reverse or rectify the situation. Here, you’ll discover more about the foods experts claim you should be eating for hair loss prevention.

Which foods should you be focusing on?

If you are worried about hair loss or hair thinning, there’s certain foods you’ll want to start adding to your daily diet. One of these is flaxseeds. According to experts, just a sprinkling of flaxseeds over a salad or your daily porridge oats, can help to prevent the hair from becoming weak and brittle. Mango is also said to help massively, thanks to its silica mineral content. This mineral helps to promote hair growth and strengthen the hair. Just two slices each day is said to have a significant effect on the hair. If you’re looking to make the hair thicker and healthier, eggs can also help. They’re renowned for their ability to boost collagen production and experts suggest eating a couple of them up to four times each week.  Lemons are also recommended as they are rich in vitamin C, which improves the rate it which your hair grows by boosting the production of collagen. These are just some of the foods said to have a positive impact on the hair. However, as mentioned at the start of this blog, making these simple changes is unlikely to make any difference if you’re suffering from an underlying condition that's causing hair loss. They should only be seen as a potential preventative measure.

Why proper treatment should be sought

There’s a surprising number of reasons the hair can start to fall out. The most common type of hair loss – male pattern baldness – is unlikely to be affected by dietary changes. This is because it’s a hereditary condition with no cure. Similarly, if the hair loss is triggered by a medical issue, dietary changes aren’t going to help much. For this reason, it’s extremely important you seek a proper diagnosis to determine the true cause of the problem. Overall, those looking to prevent hair loss could definitely benefit from making simple dietary changes like the ones mentioned above. However, it’s important to make sure you seek a proper diagnosis once hair loss does set in, so the appropriate treatment can be started.

Is this the future for hair loss treatment?

Unknown Reply 02:02
future hair lossHope for a hair loss cure has been provided once again after researchers develop a new hair restoration technique. There’s been a lot of developments in hair regeneration in recent years, and this latest one from Japanese scientists is definitely one of the most exciting.

Understanding the study

A team of researchers from Japan, have developed a new method to mass-produce hair follicle germs (HFGs). The results of the study were published within the Biomaterials journal and highlight the new form of hair loss therapy that could be used in the future. Hair regenerative medicine itself isn’t new. There have been several studies carried out in recent years which have revealed hair regenerative methods prove successful at combatting hair loss. However, large-scale production of HFG has so far been challenging. That’s why this new study is so promising. The researchers have managed to mass produce the HFG using a fairly simple method. They tested the HFG on mice and it showed successful at re-growing the hair.

Could it be the future of hair loss?

The new hair regeneration method is certainly promising in the future treatment of hair loss. However, it’s unlikely to be ready to be used as an actual treatment for quite some time. Further studies, especially on humans, will need to be carried out. In the meantime patients do have quite a few effective hair loss treatments to choose from. Both temporary and permanent hair loss conditions can be treated either through medications, surgery or unique alternative treatments such as SMP. Before any treatment can be started, the cause of the hair loss will need to be diagnosed. Different treatments work for different hair loss conditions so identifying the root cause is essential. You can book a free and confidential consultation today to discover the cause of your hair loss worries and to determine the best treatment going forward by completing the form on the right.

Parker Institute researchers at Stanford create data-driven method to more accurately predict relapse at time of diagnosis

Predicting Childhood Leukemia(parkerici.org) – Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine have developed a better way to test early on which childhood leukemia patients will relapse in the future.

The method, used at the time of diagnosis, predicts which patients will relapse with 85 percent accuracy – a significant improvement over the traditional method. The results were published in Nature Medicine today.

Researchers analyzed samples from 60 children with pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia and compared them to samples from healthy patients. Using single-cell mass cytometry (also called CyTOF), the team looked at 35 proteins involved in B-cell development. Applying machine learning to that data, researchers identified six features of leukemia cells that could help predict relapse after treatment.

Can Caffeine Prevent Hair Loss?

Unknown Reply 14:12

Caffeine is one of the most popular drugs in the planet, is it also a key to healthy hair and preventing hair loss? We look closer.

What is Caffeine?

We should start at the beginning, caffeine is a psychoactive drug. As just about the only psychoactive drug that is legal it is by some distance the most popular drug in the world. We are all familiar with it's use as a stimulant... according to Wikipedia, in 2014 85% of Americans consume caffeine, in one of it's forms, on a daily basis. While a mention of caffeine will immediately make you think of coffee it should be borne in mind that it appears in tea and cola drinks too. We have been drinking coffee, according to the evidence, since the 15th Century. Beginning in southern Arabia it made it's way across to Egypt and North Africa before reaching Italy and the rest of Europe. The Dutch, by taking coffee plants to the East Indies and the Americas, would establish the coffee bean as a product of global commercial importance.

The Effects of Caffeine

Caffeine is a potent and complex drug. As such is has a range of purported benefits, and a few negative health effects. The FDA in the US classify it as "generally recognised as safe," principally because a toxic dose would require someone to guzzle their way through as many as 100 cups of coffee in a day. It should be noted that pregnant women are, in some areas, recommended to limit their intake to a couple of cups a day. Also that powdered caffeine, sold as a dietary supplement, can be lethal if you eat as little as a tablespoon. On the upside, caffeine is the go to stimulant for many. It can also reduce symptoms of depression and decrease suicide risk.

Caffeine for Hair Loss

It makes sense that healthy hair is a by-product of a healthy lifestyle. Caffeine is suggested by some as a useful addition to a regime aimed at improving hair health. The theory is that caffeine increases blood flow in the scalp and so promotes (increases) hair growth.

HIS Hair Clinic

Caffeine has been on our radar for some time, particularly since the German firm Alepecin spent so much money convincing people to buy their caffeine based shampoo to fight hair loss. We have yet to see any conclusive evidence linking caffeine to proven hair growth, and suspect that, given the number of coffee shops that have opened over the last 20 years, we might have seen some positive effect from all that coffee drinking. So many people drinking so much coffee, you have to think, at least produce some anecdotal evidence. Aclaris Announce Latest Hair Loss Patent

Unknown Reply 14:12

Aclaris Therapeutics Inc. have made the latest in a series of announcements on their research into JAK inhibitors for hair loss.

Aclaris Therapeutics Inc.

Aclaris are based in Pennsylvania. They were set up to address areas of the market where they saw unmet needs, like hair loss, and seek to develop and bring to market innovative therapies to address them. They have, in recent years, in a series of statements announced steps forward in their work with Columbia University, with who they have a commercial agreement to take discoveries to market, on hair loss treatments. This has seen them develop a large portfolio of patents based on a medication which works on a particular group, or family, of enzymes known as  Janus Kinase.

JAK Inhibitors

Put simply, the team at Aclaris are developing methods of interrupting the signals that are passed using the Janus Kinase enzymes, along the JAK-STAT signalling pathway. These medications are generically called JAK inhibitors, though since we last wrote about them the term "jakinibs" seems to have taken hold.

Latest

A few days ago Aclaris announced that they have received a patent to cover the use of a particular JAK inhibitor, this one called tofacitinib. The approval covers it's use to both induce hair growth and to prevent hair loss. It adds to the existing portfolio which already boasts treatments for alopecia areata and adrogenetic, or hereditary, hair loss.

HIS Hair Clinic

We have followed the work of Aclaris for some time now, they are interesting to follow. Their connection to one of the leading universities, responsible for delivering the innovative treatments, leaves them with the clear focus on taking them through the bureaucracy and bringing them to market. Hopefully this will be a mutually beneficial arrangement that will become a standard way for universities to benefit from their ability to develop through intellect and monetize their success. It seems eminently sensible to us. McFadden goes public about his hair transplant

Unknown Reply 02:27
brian mcfaddenEx Westlife singer Brian McFadden, has become the latest male celebrity to undergo a hair transplant. The star revealed photos of his new look and opened up about his battle with hair loss, claiming his receding hairline made him feel really self-conscious. Now, he couldn’t be happier and is looking forward to regaining his old hairline back.

Men shouldn’t be ashamed to seek help

One of the main reasons McFadden chose to go public about his hair transplant, was to show men they don’t have to be ashamed of seeking help. It’s totally normal to feel self-conscious about losing your hair, but there is help available. A lot of men turn to hair transplants these days to help rectify their balding problem. While they aren’t necessarily the answer for everyone, they can prove extremely successful at delaying and treating the effects of male pattern baldness.

How do hair transplants work?

Hair transplants use a fairly straightforward procedure to take hair from the back or sides of the head and transplant it into the front. As McFadden’s candid photos prove, it can look pretty brutal. However, the procedure itself isn’t overly painful if it is carried out correctly. There are different methods which can be used during a hair transplant, but FUE tends to be the most common these days. It’s the newest form of hair transplant, producing exceptional results. The FUT method is also effective and it comes at a lower cost than FUE, but the results may not be quite as impressive. If you want to find out more about hair transplants and other treatments you can complete the form on the right or call us to speak for free and in confidence to one of team of friendly experts. . What Are Neem Leaves?

Neem is a tree that grows natively across the Indian subcontinent, it can also be found in Australia where it was introduced in the 1940's to provide shade to cattle. Also known as Nimtree or Indian Lilac it is a member of the mahogany family. It grows quickly to a height of up to 20M and develops a dense crown that may be as wide as the tree is tall. It produces white, fragrant flowers and fruit similar in appearance to an olive. It is extremely resistant to drought and consequently is designated a weed in many areas.

The shoots and flowers of the tree are eaten, though it is an acquired taste and not for everyone. The uses for Neem have, for centuries, revolved around it's pharmaceutical properties which offer a solution to a range of problems. In Ayurvedic medicine it is credited with being anthelmintic; antifungal; antidiabetic; antibacterial; antiviral; contraceptive and sedative. It is also a major component in Siddha medicine where it is particularly prescribed for skin diseases including eczema and psoriasis.

Neem Leaves For Hair Loss

There are a number of health issues associated with actually eating Neem, all of them triggered by eating too much or for too long. A safer bet then is to use the oil as a topical ointment which can be massaged into the scalp. Simply heat the oil, do not boil, prior to massaging it into the scalp for 5 or 10 minutes. Leave it on for an hour then take a shower. Twice a week is apparently enough... though you should be prepared for the smell of the oil, which is not exactly pleasant. Console yourself with all that good you might be doing.

HIS Hair Clinic

Neem has remarkable set of properties, which combine to suggest it makes a sensible addition to a skincare routine, especially if you suffer from skin conditions of any kind. We are less convinced of it's ability to stave off genetic hair loss but it may be a great way to prepare your scalp for a series of Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatments. What You Need To Know About Trichotillomania Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 05:53

Trichotillomania is a distressing condition that sees sufferers literally pulling their own hair out, here are the essentials.

What Is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania is categorized as a medical illness that causes the sufferer to pull on their own hair. The sufferer will typically pull away at the same type of hair, be that eyebrow, eyelash or the scalp. The condition typically affects young people between the ages of 9 and 13 and mostly presents in girls. But it can affect anyone of any age. Untreated the disorder can recur for anything up to a year. The sufferer is required to cope with the stress of the absent hair, which may have left them without eyelashes or with a bald patch on their head. The impact from the sense of losing control should not be underestimated, even though the pulled hair will often be chewed or rolled in the fingers, as the sufferer is normally completely unaware that they are doing it... but are painfully reminded when they look in the mirror. Suggested causes range from an issue with chemical messages passing between the nerve cells in the brain, to genetic predisposition and stress. The condition often presents alongside other compulsive disorders like biting nails or sucking thumbs, or scratching.

Treatment

The first thing to do is to get a diagnosis. This is quickly achieved with a short meeting with a doctor, there will be an examination and a series of questions aimed at getting to the possible cause. Once diagnosed the condition can be treated through therapy or medication. Despite a lack of research on trichotillomania there are effective therapies that can help the sufferer reduce the incidences of pulling or even stop altogether.

HIS Hair Clinic

Trichotillomania is a distressing condition because it affects mostly very young people. They can suffer at school and among their friends through being teased, promoting feelings of isolation that will only make the condition worse. For parents trying to come to terms with the underlying conditions that are causing triggering the hair pulling it is also a testing time. Early diagnosis and support is the key, so keep a look out for the symptoms. Do you ever get used to being bald?

Unknown Reply 01:03
bald manFor many men, going bald can be a devastating experience. While hair loss is an extremely common issue, it doesn’t ease the negative psychological effects suffered throughout the balding process. The question is, once the hair is totally lost, do you ever get used to being bald?

Is it possible to embrace baldness?

There’s been a lot of positive media coverage of men who are openly embracing their baldness. While they’re certainly inspirational, does it mean all men will eventually get used to being bald? Maybe, but as 53-year old David Toussaint admits, that isn’t always the case. Opening up about his experience with baldness, Toussaint claims he finds it difficult to deal with his lack of hair. Instead, he prefers to cover up the problem with hats whenever possible. At 53 years of age, Toussaint is still struggling to come to terms with the problem, proving the self-consciousness over hair loss doesn’t always go away.

What options do you have if you can’t accept it?

If you’re one of the many men who cannot accept or get used to your baldness, help is available. While hair transplants aren’t really a viable option for those who have gone completely bald, a procedure known as SMP could be a good alternative. SMP, or Scalp MicroPigmentation, is similar to a tattoo but far more specialised.  Small pigments of specialist ink are insertd into the scalp using fine microneedles. It creates an almost miraculous shaved head appearance. Mimicking real hair follicles, the ink produces exceptionally realistic 3d layered results. There are hundreds of different coloured inks available and several are often used to create realistic shading. The results of SMP are long-lasting. It also requires very little maintenance and can do wonders for giving men back their self-esteem and confidence. To find out more about SMP and whether it would be a good option for you, you can complete the form on the right or call us to arrange a free and confidential consultation with one of team of friendly experts.

Put On A Hat To Help Find Brain Tumour Cure

Unknown Reply 07:46

Sarah Gaffney-Lang, from Manchester in the UK, battling her own brain tumour, is an inspiration to many through her story and support for Wear A Hat day. We look closer.

Sarah's Story

Sarah Gaffney-Lang was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the tragically young age of just 29. Surgery attempting to remove 95% of the tumour did not work as planned and complications left Sarah unable to walk. Since then her mobility, through physiotherapy and Sarah's own seemingly limitless supplies of determination, has improved considerably. What turns a sad story into a remarkable one is how Sarah has coped with the various stages of her journey. This month sees her undergoing the final cycle of twelve chemotherapy sessions, following a diagnosis after a collapse at York races in September 2016. Sarah's reaction to losing her hair during the chemo treatment was typical of her upbeat approach to everything, she said she was proud of being a "baldy" and delighted to be saving a fortune on hairdressers and styling products. Her demanding physio routines saw her learn to walk using zimmer frames and walking sticks, which she would delight in "styling up" - Typical of a woman who describes her  life as "inconvenienced" by her illness.

Wear A Hat Day

The national charity, Brain Tumour Research, launched Wear A Hat Day to raise funds during March each year, with March designated as Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Now in it's 9th year there are events at schools and workplaces all aimed at raising awareness and understanding, as well as raising vital funds for new research. Sarah's story caught the eye of Caprice. The former model was diagnosed herself with a low-grade brain tumour a year ago, successfully removed she continues to be monitored by her medical team. Caprice told Brain Tumour Research "I have been so touched by Sarah's story. Its just amazing that brain tumours affect so many people,. This devastating disease is indiscriminate and can affect anyone at any age. I'm proud to be working with this sassy and stylish young woman and so many others to support Wear A Hat Day. I want everyone to get involved! It's such a fun event and anyone can take part. Inspired by Sarah, let's all put our hats on and do something positive to support the fantastic research going on right now. I'm determined to try to make a difference for the 16,000 people diagnosed with a brain tumour each year."

The men only salon down under

Unknown Reply 00:41
men onlyA barber from New Zealand has sparked outrage after he refused to cut a woman’s hair; the situation has resulted in irate customers accusing him of discrimination online. The woman who has asked to go simply by the name Rachael shared that she visited the barber shop in Wellington, New Zealand and asked for a standard short back and side’s haircut – a traditional men’s barber cut. She assumed it wouldn’t be a problem as she had visited the shop a few years before and had excellent service previously. However the owner of the barber’s shop, which has become a chain in Australia and currently has four shops, said he stood by the store’s refusal to serve her. Matt Time said that he understands how times have changed and apologised for the experience Rachael had to go through, but also felt that he should stick to the vision he had when he opened the barber shop five years ago.

Why Have Men’s Only Barbershops?

Time considers his barber shop to be traditional and old-school and describes on the brands website that it is a men’s only barbershop. The concept is to provide a relaxed environment for men to come, drink beer and confidently discuss any issues they may be facing at work or at home. He related his reasoning to women’s only gyms and says he can understand how women want a place to be able to work out and feel comfortable without the presence of men. Although his shop has serviced women in the past when the shop initially opened, he realised it was getting to the point that they were receiving seven female customers per week. Some male clients had even complained to Time and said they felt unhappy seeing women in the shop as they were unable to speak openly about their issues. Rachael is not the only female to have faced rejection from Times barber shop, Genevieve Fowler also shared her experience and branded the idea of men’s only barbershops as ‘old-fashioned sexism’. Fowler said that as she keeps her hair short and wants to maintain a barbers cut, she cannot understand the reason behind the rejection when she simply wants the same service at the same cost.
