Jumping On The Hair Loss Cure Bandwagon

Unknown Reply 07:47

Last month we told the story of the team from Manchester who had identified a potential new hair loss candidate... today we see it being advertised.

Dr Nathan Hawkshaw

Dr Hawkshaw is a Dr. of Medicine who did his PhD in Dermatology. He works at the prestigious University of Manchester and, with his colleagues, in the laboratory of Prof. Ralf Paus. He is of enormous interest to us because they were researching our favourite topic... hair loss. Dr Hawkshaw's team had run a full gene expression analysis of a drug called Cyclosporine A (CsA). This drug has been in common use since the 80's where it is essential for it's immunosupressive qualities... allowing patients to be treated for autoimmune disorders and helping to avoid transplant rejection. On it's quite long list of side-effects, and definitely considered the least serious, was unwanted hair growth... it seems the (CsA) took the brakes off hair growth.

Identifying the Hair Growth Trigger

It would also seem apparent that because the unwanted hair growth was the least serious of the observed side-effects not much attention was paid to it. Until that is Dr Hawkshaw and his team decided to make a closer inspection. The gene expression analysis they performed revealed that the CsA reduces the production of a protein called SFRP1, which inhibits the development and growth of many tissues, including hair follicles. This revelationary piece of information also came with a bonus, that this inhibitory mechanism was completely unrelated to the immunosupressive action of CsA. Dr Hawkshaw's team set out and found a compound, WAY-316606, that targets the same mechanism with none of the side-effects associated with CsA.

HIS Hair Clinic

This was last month. The team in Manchester are making their plans for clinical trials... testing to date was done with human hair follicles donated by a UK hair transplant surgeon (wonder if they told their patients). Imagine our surprise when we read of a Mumbai based Indian transplant surgeon already offering his clients a treatment based on the research. To be fair, he has analysed Dr Hawkshaw's results and published his results on YouTube. We kid you not. Our strong recommendation would be to save yourself a trip to a Mumbai clinic, even if you live in Mumbai, and wait for the team at Manchester to update us... bear in mind that until those clinic trials have been performed there are no guidelines on required dose, method of application, frequency of dose... oh, and safety. Never mind efficacy. We will most definitely keep you posted on their progress. The Trouble With Hair Transplants

Unknown Reply 12:11

Rafa Nadal, superstar tennis pro, is reported to be headed back to the transplant surgeon for his second treatment in short order... is this the trouble with transplants?

Rafa Nadal

Rafa burst onto the professional tennis circuit back in 2005 when, as a muscular 19 year old, he won his first major tournament at the French Open. He has only failed to win that title on three occasions since and is rightly recognised as the "King of Clay." His total of 11 titles, he is the current champion, also means he holds the record for the most wins at any single tournement by a player in the history of the game. So there is no hint of exaggeration when describing Rafa as a global superstar. All that attention comes at a price of course, and when Rafa began to lose his hair he took a quick decision to do something about it. Last year saw him have transplant surgery at the clinic of a well known Madrid clinic. 6 months later the relocated locks had taken hold and there was a distinct improvement in his appearance. But his story does not end there...

No Going Back Now

Unfortunately it would seem the transplant is not the end of the story for Rafa, not even in the short term. Fast forward 18 months and, according to tennisworld.com, that hair loss is back and was very visible at a recent tournament ... his Spanish surgeon was quick to point out that it is not the transplanted hair failing, those occipital hairs, once they have taken root, can be relied on. Rafa's problem was that his own hair loss was progressing, and creating new gaps around the transplanted hair. In the same report tennisworld.com tell us that Rafa has headed straight back to his surgeon for additional work.

HIS Hair Clinic

Of course it is no problem for Rafa Nadal, he is a seriously wealthy young man. But for those among us who end up seeing a transplant as their own salvation, scrimping and saving to be able to afford the treatment, the idea that they may need to fork out again just two years later is terrible. Not least because the first time they made that decision they were coping with standard male pattern hair loss, the second time their appearance is often made worse by a small strip of relocated hair in the middle of an ever increasing bald patch. There in a nutshell, is the trouble with transplants. The progress of hair loss is unpredictable at best, but you should at least wait for a period of stability before starting out on what might end up being a series of surgeries. Time To Get Your Head Around Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 12:11

Whether you have been bald for years or are facing your first summer with hair loss, we encourage some different thinking...

Summertime Blues

The start of summer is always a welcome time of year, the warmer weather helps but it's also when many of us take our vacations, when the kids are off school, when festivals take place... in temperate zones it massively improves the options for a day trip or evening out. The extended hours of daylight are not just welcome, for some they are a physical necessity and having miserably hibernated through all those cold dark months these people can spread their wings and enjoy life again, for a while. For a hair loss sufferer the world can be seen through a very different lens. To be clear, we would distinguish men with hair loss into two groups, those who suffer and those who just have hair loss that does not bother them at all... sure, they would, given the chance, have it all back, but they can live perfectly happy and fulfilled lives without it. For the sufferers none of those things are true, the hair loss fundamentally impacts on how they see themselves, leaving them feeling separated and inadequate. They struggle to make the social impact in their group that they should, they feel that their appearance stops them making new friends, or is responsible for them struggling at work, especially if they are the victim of bullying around their hair loss.

Perfect Timing

Our heartfelt advice is to embrace summer, to shave down that head and get out to catch some rays. Use protection of course but there is nothing like some colour on your scalp and face to improve your general appearance. Beyond a simple improvement in how healthy you look, not least because you have ditched the hat which would otherwise be cursing you with a line across the bottom of your forehead above which everything is a ghostly white, a suntan does wonders for your own self-confidence... it is always a better face to look at in the mirror. If you have been through previous summers you will know what we are talking about and the truth in our suggestion. If this is destined to be your first summer with hair loss then there is no better time to shave down... or be doomed until next spring before such a great opportunity comes up again.

HIS Hair Clinic

The added bonus, obvious to us, is that shaving your receding hair down, and getting used to that as an appearance, is the perfect preparation for moving on to a Scalp Micropigmentation treatment. We know that for some the dread they feel at the prospect of stepping out without a hat is huge, to do it having shaved even tougher. But the rewards are immense, and SMP is there as your safety net should it all prove too much. If you would like to discuss your hair loss situation with one of our team of friendly experts simply complete the contact form at the side of this page, or click here to find your nearest clinic.

Young Artist With Something To Say About Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 05:21

Peter DeVito is a young artist who made his name with unretouched pictures of people with acne, now he has broadened his attention to include hair loss. We look closer.

Peter DeVito

Peter is a young American artist, he turned 21 last month, who developed a following with his series of unretouched images of people with acne, the aim being to normalise the condition. He suffered himself and bought huge empathy to the work. But his latest project has seen him take on all manner of skin conditions as he broadens his scope and uses it as a platform to make some seriously charged political comment. His work on both projects used the faces of models with things that they have heard said about them or their condition superimposed onto their faces. It makes for striking images and powerful messages, Using the Kendrick Lamar line "I'm so XXXX sick and tired of the photoshop" on the face of a model with acne saw the image reposted in huge numbers. The new work is on much tougher ground and is altogether more aggressive in flavour, a young black man with a series of racial stereotypes on his face for example. But there is also a loud and proud, not to mention, aggressive  bald man...

Brice

Brice is a male model with alopecia totalis, meaning he has no hair anywhere on his body which has been provoking reaction since he was a child. He tells DeVito that he is often asked why he is bald... his response might not work for everyone - "Why are you bald? First of all, it is rude to ask anyone why they look a certain way. The reason I'm bald has nothing to do with who I am as a person. Why am I bald you ask? Let me ask you this: Who raised you to have zero manners? I have a genetic disorder. That's really none of your XXX business though."

HIS Hair Clinic

We appreciate the efforts of Peter DeVito, and the ballsy attitude of Brice... an attitude that has seen him carve out a successful career as a model. DeVito's is a name we will surely hear again, and we at HIS HQ are looking forward to seeing where this young man takes us next. Scare Tactics Peddling Hair Loss Cure

Unknown Reply 12:11

There are enough good stats and facts around hair loss with the need to inflate or create new ones to scare...

The Search For A Hair Loss Cure

We just read an advertorial on Newswire for a vitamin supplement... of course it is so much  more than a vitamin supplement, they have, according to the blurb, thrown in all manner of herbs and minerals. There are many such products on the shelves of course, and all make their carefully couched claims for their efficacy at treating particular illnesses or conditions. That hair loss features regularly as a target is no surprise, people have been searching for a hair loss cure forever - that search is recorded in everything from ancient scrolls to modern biotechnology. The net result, to date, is a couple of FDA approved medications that can at best halt the progress, though each comes with it's own warning label and only one of them is available to women. (due to the potential for birth defects in unborn children - eek!). Yet another advert for a "natural" remedy suggesting it can succeed where thousands of years of trial and error product testing plus a few years of serious biotechnical research have failed, it is not particularly unusual. What sets this one apart is some of the claims it makes.

Fake News?

The advertorial quoted the results of a survey conducted by Hairline International, which it describes as a hair loss support group. It may well be too, but we could find no trace of them... only a hair loss clinic of the same name. Which might explain some of the extreme claims it says it found in it's results. "78% of the female members" have ceased feeling like women and 40% experienced "some problems" in their marriage...unfortunately the article does now tell us the actual questions that were asked in the survey but both strike us as either remarkably pointed questions, unsuitable for a survey, or huge leaps taken with the inferences drawn from the answers to those actual questions. It went on to claim that 63% had considered suicide. In addition, it went on to make strange comments about women being "terrified of going bald like a man" and "their hormones becoming masculinised."  Women do not go bald like a man, they go bald like a woman with shedding taking place behind the hairline and across the top of the head... and what on earth is involved in someone's hormones becoming masculinised?

HIS Hair Clinic

The solution, it turns out if you read far enough, is vitamin B, specifically biotin. Delivered in a capsule along with a veritable multitude of other ingredients it is offered as a fix for hair loss and as a generally beneficial concoction to improve the condition of your hair. Or you could just take the vitamin B supplement, or, if you are dubious about the benefits of these supplements (and many are), you might just eat a few more eggs, cauliflower and almonds - all rich in truly natural biotin. There is enough distress caused by hair loss among women without anyone needing to amplify the stress, and the claim that nearly two thirds of sufferers had considered suicide is not far short of disgraceful. Great Contribution To Women’s Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 08:03

We stumbled on a very personal account of one woman's fight with hair loss and felt obliged to share.

Louise McSharry

Louise is writer and columnist with a social media following who look to her for honest advice on all things beauty. Describing herself as  "unfiltered in every way" her appetite for life and the enthusiasm of someone who has made their passion their work is evident from the moment you read any of articles. So when life dealt one of those tough blows her take on things was always going to be worth reading. In her case the blow was delivered in August 2014 in the form of a Hodgkins Lymphoma diagnosis. It is a form of blood cancer and resulted in a 6 month course of chemotherapy that led to hair loss. She followed a friends advice to get it chopped off rather than put herself through the misery of picking it up in pieces from all over your home.

The Road From There

Louise was lucky enough to have a hairdresser who specialised in treating women with hair loss, one who had a private room in which he treated her with all due care and sensitivity... it's a tough and emotional process that can catch you by surprise. Her piece, titled Skin Deep, and published in the Daily Edge (see the original article here), is full of these down to earth and practical tips on all the ideas and techniques she used to get through. In the main they apply equally to any woman suffering from hair loss through any cause. Her honest appraisal of the experience has something in it for men too.

HIS Hair Clnic

Her brand of solid, salt of the earth advice is of the sort you might have got from your grandmother, before technology made their generation socially irrelevant long before their time - you have to wonder if we threw the baby out with the bathwater... you don't know what you don't know, and we have no idea what little nuggets we all missed out on by disassociating ourselves from that generation.  Thank goodness for Louise McSharry and those like her for keeping a human tradition alive, there is no substitute for common sense. Stress Related Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 08:03
The ability of stress to influence our hair loss is known, a reminder has come to us from an Asian celebrity.   Stress Related Hair Loss Stress is such a challenging condition, the hormones that are released during periods of stress can cause damage. High levels of them over a prolonged period of time can cause extensive systemic damage. One of the visible signs that you are run down come from the fastest growing cells on our body, these reflect the current state of affairs. Those cells are found in our hair and on our fingernails. The incredibly complex business of growing hair, through it's various and equally vital stages, is easily knocked out of it's cyclical routine. Sufferers who have lost hair through experiencing a moment of crisis are a powerful example of this. But what about the everyday stress of coping with life? For some that is more than enough to induce that heightened state of stress. Imagine then what it must be like for a celebrity, to be struggling to cope and being forced to live in the public eye. That was the story for Peniel Shin. BtoB BtoB, or Born to Beat, are a South Korean boy band who have been huge since 2012. As a member Peniel Shin clearly found the exhausting routine a challenge, physically and mentally. It took it's toll and Peniel discovered, to his horror, that he was losing his hair. The problem worsened until, at one stage, he had lost, by his own estimation, around 70% of his hair and he began to shave down... what else was a lad to do he thought. Hello Counselor Hello Counselor is a TV show where people come on to discuss their problems. In a surprising, but inspired, move Peniel turne dup as  guest and spoke out about his hair loss which he said had been getting worse for the entire 5 years he had been part of the BtoB project. Today he no longer bothers shaving down and his hair has recovered to around 70%, according to Peniel, of it's full glory. He gives a lot of the credit to his appearance on the Hello Counselor show, "After coming on the show last time and talking about my hair, I didn't even go back to the hospital"  he told the show last week on a follow up visit. HIS Hair Clinic Peniel's is a classic case of stress where hair is the obvious symptom. If you believe a sudden change in the condition of your hair, particularly if you start losing hair, could be associated with a stressful lifestyle then consider making changes... and get along to your doctor for a consultation and a check-up. New Kind Of Hair Tattoo

Unknown Reply 08:03

The fevered build up to the football World Cup in Russia has inspired a Serbian to create a new kind of hair tattoo. We are delighted to share.

World Cup Fever

As half the people on the planet prepare for the upcoming football World Cup in Russia the excitement is seriously building. The squads have all arrived having completed a round of pre-tournament friendlies. Fans are arriving in their tens, hundreds even, of thousands from all over the globe where a warm greeting from the locals has added to the festival atmosphere. In all the hullabaloo it would have been easy to miss this story, but we are so glad we didn't. Like you, possibly, we were drawn in by the reference to a hair tattoo. We were expecting to find another SMP warrior from the fringes, someone who read all about it on the internet and had the resources to acquire the necessary equipment and had a go at teaching him or herself. We usually look at the pictures through our fingers, to say they do not always turn out perfectly is an understatement. Pleased to report that nothing could be further from the truth this time...

Creative Genius

We were treated to the work of Mario Praise. Mario is a hairdresser from Serbia who, nine years ago, was asked by a client to "do something new with my hair"... so he cut a tarantula into his head. In Mario's salon the rest is history. He went on from bugs to portraits of famous people, beginning with Novak Dokovic, the Serbian world No. 1 tennis player before moving on to football players - where a portrait of Cristiano Ronaldo made him a big hit in his homeland. Along with another of Lionel Messi (pictured), Ronaldo's rival for the title of best player in the world, his reputation has now gone global after attention from the legion of journalists staring at all things football.

HIS Hair Clinic

It wasn't our idea of a new hair tattoo, just the same we love the outcome and applaud the efforts of Mario Praise, who says these creations take between 5 and 7 hours. An amazing feat of art on his part, a feat of endurance on the part of the client. Star Wars Actor Gets Hair Transplant

Unknown Reply 00:00

Star Wars veteran Warwick Davis, a big man in a very small body, has spent a reported £10K on a hair transplant. We did not see that coming...

Warwick Davis

Everyone's favourite Ewok, Warwick Davis, has enjoyed a stellar entertainments career. The 3ft 5' actor first hit our screens in Willow, alongside a very young Tom Cruise, and has rarely been off them since. He has worked with many of Hollywood's A-listers appearing in Star Wars and the Harry Potter films, while at home in the UK he has featured in many TV shows including an award-winning Ricky Gervaise vehicle. Apparently a close associate has been gossiping to UK tabloid The Mirror, telling them that Warwick has forked out a spectacular £10K on a robot hair transplant performed in the North of England. The source went on to say "Warwick was becoming increasingly self-conscious about his receding hair." No doubt the truth will come out in due course as we watch for pictures of Warwick's new look to appear - though of course it will be several months before we, or he, can expect to find out how successful the procedure has been.

HIS Hair Clinic

We were taken aback at this news... it is not often we pick up on hair transplant stories. We understand that for some screen celebrities, their appearance will feel paramount and the realisation that their hair loss is advancing will see them resort to wigs and transplants. But for Warwick Davis there can surely be no question that his treatment might lead to more roles, or that allowing nature to take it's course would be likely to in any way curtail his career. The fact that he has gone through a 5 hour session that is far from pain free is testament in itself of how determined he was to do something about his hair loss.  This is a man who has spent his entire adult life with people looking down at the top of his head, so maybe he feels he has a reason to be motivated into doing something. This is also a man who lacks nothing in self confidence, charisma or presence. Which speaks to how deeply personal an issue hair loss is for those that truly suffer with it, if you really feel the need to do something about your hair loss then you most definitely should. Inspirational Hair Loss Sufferers

Unknown Reply 14:00

A heartwarming story for hair loss sufferers everywhere as a group of very brave ladies removed their wigs on live UK television. Definitely worth a closer look.

Doing It With Panache

During a recent episode of the popular UK breakfast TV show This Morning, a hair loss support group   called Panache came onto the show to discuss their condition with the show's hosts, Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford. The segment started with the women, who call themselves "Woman Warriors," talking about their experiences of living with hair loss. The support they all got from their group was evident. One, Alicia, spoke about her own path to confidence, not yet complete, which sees her confident enough to go out with family not wearing her wig. She added, "The bullying, I'm' not quite used to it yet." Another Warrior, Sharon, told the hosts "It's very rare that I go out without my wig on at the  minute, but because of the Panache group it will not be long."

The Big Brave Reveal

In a dramatic moment, Eamonn the genial Irish host told his audience "We're now about to see a drastic change." He went on "This is your reality, so do you mind?" The women, as one, then proceeded to peel back their wigs. It was quite a moment too, Eamonn was visibly moved and crossed the studio to hug some of the women. Viewers flooded the station with messages of support, along with thanks from the the many, many women who will have been watching while enduring their own hair loss issues.

HIS Hair Clinic

Panache are a group that support members of all ages, they run wig workshops and make-up tutorials along with other supportive activities. If you would like to find out more about their work click here to visit their site. It was a visually powerful and emotionally challenging moment when they all took off their wigs, not least because it was screened to millions so early in the morning. It became a small twitter storm and doubtless provoked thousands of conversations on the subject. Well done to all involved in making it happen, but particularly to those eight brave Panache members willing to go on national live television to emphatically demonstrate their commitment to the cause. Unusual Hair Loss Treatment Shows Results

Unknown Reply 12:01

Researchers in Egypt have published results of their research on a new form of hair loss therapy. We look closer.

Tanta University

News reaches us, via one of our favourite sources of unusual articles, of a completely original hair loss treatment that initially struck us as an unlikely way forward. We are all for experiments that are designed to improve the set of tools available to address hair loss, and one that might actually help regrow hair where there was none... well, that is the Holy Grail for all treatments.

Carboxytherapy

Earlier this year researchers at Tanta University in Egypt set about testing a new treatment. It involves pumping small amounts of carbon dioxide under the skin, the idea being that this plumps up the skin... so no doubt it will be on offer to the legion of Botox fans who might have decided they have had enough of putting a lethal poison into their faces. The treatment is believed to work by fooling the body's systems into thinking that there might be a shortage of oxygen in the treated area, with the reaction being to send oxygen rich blood to the region to help fix some presumed damage. Like other treatments which attempt the same result the thought is that this oxygen rich blood can help push redundant hair follicles back into a growth phase.

Does It Work?

It is a little hard to be certain about the quality of the results, we have not found detailed analysis, but the claims from the team are fairly impressive. They tested using 80 men and women with hair loss with half being given the gas injections and the rest receiving a placebo. After 3 months we are told those who had received the jabs, unlike the placebo group, had "significantly improved" hair density.

HIS Hair Clinic

That description of "significantly improved" hair density always leaves us a little cool. We have seen detailed results from peer reviewed studies which reached the same conclusion about other treatments, including FDA approved products... the problem being that a scientific definition of improvement it a long way behind what we as consumers would expect from a hair loss cure. Adding a few more strands simply does not cut it. Carboxytherapy as a non-invasive treatment is already available so maybe we can look forward to some real world testing and feedback on it's efficacy. We won't be holding our breath though. Could The Answer To Hair Loss Be Eggs?

Unknown Reply 01:06

A team in Japan have been doing interesting work with eggs, and believe they are on track for a hair loss cure... we look closer.

Osaka University

Osaka is home to the sixth oldest university in the country, as the Osaka Prefectural Medical College it is considered one of Japan's National Seven Universities. The list of alumni and their inventions is impressive, not to mention eclectic. We have them to thank for such diverse offerings as the lithium ion battery, Sony and the cult book Battle Royale. Not to mention laureates and Nobel prize winners in medicine and physics. So when a team of researchers from this august institution tell us they think they are onto something with their version of a hair loss cure, we pay attention.

Is The Answer In Eggs?

Earlier this year scientists at Osaka published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, a report on their work looking at peptides in egg yolk. They believed that one in particular, HGP, was behind the ability of the chick to grow hairs and feathers before hatching. Other birds use the same system. Humans, of course, develop hair after birth. Their tests demonstrated that this peptide in egg-yolk was capable of stimulating growth factors to be produced in the skin, which in turn leads to hair production.

HIS Hair Clinic

We need to inject an element of realism into this news. Identifying this peptide is undoubtedly a smart piece of research, but all we have so far is the results from an initial study. Research last year taught us that over 200 genes are involved in the business of producing hair, so it always seems unlikely to us that any single piece of research of this type is going to result in the miracle cure we would all love to see. In a few years and a few more studies, involving humans, will be needed to see where this research leads. Just the same, it is encouraging to hear that a leading university is deliberately working on a hair loss cure... rather than  discovering something by accident. We wish them well in their endeavours. If you would like to discuss your hair loss situation with one of our team of friendly experts, simply click here to find your nearest clinics.
