Treatment Services From Dr Camilla Hill

Unknown Reply 09:18

We take a closer look at the aesthetic treatments available from HIS Hair Clinic’s newest partner, Dr. Camilla Hill.

Dr Camilla Hill

Dr. Hill has been a medical professional for  27years, ever since graduating from Birmingham Medical School. Much of that time was spent on the coal-face as a GP. More recently she qualified as an aesthetics doctor and opened her own clinic. Her background as a GP perfectly prepared her for her current role as an aesthetic doctor, though she does still work as a consultant for BUPA.

The first difference you will notice when you call in is that you are straight through and talking to the Dr. What she calls optimal privacy extends to that initial contact, apart from some more complex procedures, where the presence of a qualified nurse is needed as support, you will only ever deal with Dr. Hill. Your appointment will be set sensitively with respect to the appointments before and after your own – to avoid, as far as possible, any chance of overlap.

So your personal consultation is just that, a chance for you to ask all your questions and to receive the expert assessment of a medical professional. Following that assessment a treatment programme will be devised. For some this consists of nothing more than reassurance that your condition is not yet worthy of medical intervention. For others one or more of the treatments available will be recommended and discussed in detail. Some involve the use of needles and this can be a serious concern to many.. but it is one that is worked around all the time and there is no need for anxiety.

Treatments

Anti-Wrinkle

A trusted treatment that has been available for over 40 years to address problems such as squints and muscle spasms. Today it being is also being used to treat some bladder and oesophagus issues.

Applied under the skin of the affected area it can provide a substantial improvement in the appearance of wrinkles and lines that lasts up to 3 or 4 months. The same treatment can also be used to lift the eyebrows, a remarkably transforming procedure that can take years off you. Maybe it’s most impressive work is done on the jawline, where it can be deployed to allow the muscles of your face to pull that skin upwards.. and so reduce any issues with jowls. Applied lower down it can be used to tighten the skin of the neck… these treatments are generally described as non-surgical lifts.

Dermal Fillers

As the name suggests this treatment is aimed at rejuvenating skin. The filler is made from hyaluronic acid – HA. HA is naturally occurring in the body and so completely safe. Slightly different variations of the filler are used to fill and define lips, augment cheeks and smooth out wrinkles around the mouth. Dermal fillers can also be used in conjunction with ani wrinkle injections to lift the brow, where they add considerably to the longevity but also provide a near instant improvent. Once in position the HA will attract water which in turn adds to the rejuvenative effect. Editors note: Just one of the many advantages of receiving your treatment from a medical professional is the use of local anaesthetic during the procedures.

Genuine Dermaroller

We have some experience of this procedure, many clients with HT scars will elect to go through a course of dermaroller to improve their scars prior to Scalp Micropigmentation. But it’s benefits to not stop there. Scars of all sorts, including acne, can benefit. As can ageing or sun-damaged skin, it is also a great option for wrinkles on the face of all kinds. Stretch marks can be improved after as few as just two sessions.

Excessive Sweating Therapy

Also known as Hyperhidrosis this unfortunate condition affects around 1% of the population. Those affected will suffer from massively excessive sweating on a daily basis. The solutions are high strength anti-perspirants or an FDA approved injection which blocks the nerves and thus stops the sweating… it lasts for an impressive 8 months.

Acne

This curse of the playground actually affects 1% of women and a truly surprising, to us anyway, 5% of men over the age of 25. Dr. Hill provides a specially designed programme which lasts 6 months… results visible by the end of month 1.

HIS Hair Clinic

This strikes us as a pretty comprehensive list of things that might bother you once you stop worrying about your hair loss. The quality of Dr. Hill’s proposition is there for all to see and should give you every encouragement and reason to book a consultation.

CCAM Feature: Dr. Bindra, CureSearch Trailblazer

Dr. Bindra in the labCureSearch works with innovative pediatric cancer researchers – funding only the most promising studies to push forward treatments and cures. This includes trailblazers like Dr. Ranjit Bindra of the Yale Cancer Center. Earlier this year, we granted Dr. Bindra and his team nearly $1 million for a phase 1 clinical trial testing a novel treatment for pediatric glioma, an aggressive brain cancer with a 5-year survival rate of less than 25%.

Read more about why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is especially important to research trailblazers like Dr. Bindra.

Tell us about your background in childhood cancer research and your leadership in the space.

It was during my radiation oncology residency at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, while under the mentorship of Dr. Suzanne Wolden, that I realized I wanted to devote a large portion of my time on pediatric cancers. I had the opportunity to meet and take care of a 3-year-old patient with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a type of brain cancer, who subsequently succumbed to her disease approximately two years later.

In 2012, I opened up my own independent laboratory at Yale, and I also became a pediatric radiation oncology attending at Yale. My group developed an interest in high-throughput screening for novel drugs that target pediatric cancer-associated mutations. Within two years of starting our lab, we were fortunate to have been awarded a CureSearch Young Investigator award for three years. This award allowed us to form critical infrastructure for drug screening campaigns, which we use even today.

Since then, CureSearch has also granted us a nearly $1 million Catapult Award to support our study on pediatric gliomas, which will be vital for the success of this trial. The grant will fund a new center at Yale, called “BrainStorm,” a brain tumor core focused on developing the most innovative correlative studies for pediatric cancer clinical trials. With CureSearch’s help, our group is committed to accelerating the most innovative bench science into clinical trials specifically focused on pediatric cancers. We have been fortunate to have received from support from the CureSearch foundation at critical value inflection points during the development of our program, and we would not be at this stage without it.

As the 2018 Catapult Award recipient – what is your hope for the future of childhood cancer?

We feel that have just scratched the surface for what we can do to treat pediatric cancers. That is, we believe that there are many novel approaches that can employed to both target and exploit tumor-associated mutations. As such, it is clear to us that the coming years will bring forward entirely new, disruptive and innovative clinical trials that target specific pediatric cancer mutations. In the past, targeting sub-groups of rare cancers has thought to have been not possible or feasible (e.g., how would we accrue patients to these studies in a timely manner?).

However, our group and others have been extremely vocal in conveying a message to the pediatric cancer research community, that being to follow the biology. We believe that if the science is sound, patients will come. This message is finally resonating, and that as a result we will start to see new classes of therapies for pediatric cancers, which have the potential to make meaningful improvements in survival for these diseases.

Why do you choose to support CureSearch and our mission?

CureSearch funds all stages of research, from the young investigator to the established, and it truly bridges the gap to the clinic. CureSearch funding has been essential for my group to develop critical infrastructure in our laboratory, which we will use for years to come. They’re involved in every step of the process – the CureSearch research strategy will benefit children by getting new therapies faster into the clinic. I cannot think of any other pediatric cancer foundation that operates at the level of CureSearch.

Why is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month important to you?

Pediatric cancers are devastating diseases, as the ripple effects of just one child suffering from their diagnosis spreads for miles and miles. I saw this as a pediatric brain tumor doctor, who is closely involved with the clinical care of children often with incurable tumors. In parallel, funding for pediatric cancer research is severely limited and thus foundations are essential for research. This month is important for people to remember that as a society, we have a commitment to protect our children, and saving them from devastating diseases like cancer are among the top on the list. We have a lot of work to do in terms of new therapies for pediatric cancer, and with increased recognition of the problem, as well as enhanced funding, we are poised to make great strides in this area.

Aesthetic Services From Dr. Camilla Hill

Unknown Reply 03:38

Here, as promised, a selection of the aesthetic treatments on offer at Dr Camilla Hill’s beautiful clinic in Worcestershire. Or rather, a slightly more digestible selection of the problems that can be fixed there…

Dr Camilla Hill

As you would expect from any partner of HIS Hair Clinic, Dr. Hill operates at the very top end of her industry. Let’s face it, this is an industry with a broad spectrum of operators. From the chancers offering treatments in your own home on the basis of a certificate they downloaded from the internet and some YouTube training, to high street salons that started out offering tanning and now provide everything from whiter teeth to glittering fingernails, oh and the occasional medical procedure. Dr. Camilla Hill is a fully qualified medical and aesthetics doctor with 17 years experience as a local GP. That background qualifies her perfectly to make robust assessments during her consultations, which are free, taking into account all existing medical conditions. The result is a treatment plan that is entirely appropriate, every time. For some that will mean no treatment plan, just reassurance. But what you get, and in perfect keeping with the ethos of HIS Hair, is an honest appraisal of your condition and the right advice on what needs to be done. If anything does.

What Do You See First In The Mirror

Our eyes are drawn to our perceived shortcomings. Whether it is the bags under your eyes or those ever deepening frown lines on your forehead, we all have something we would put top of our list if we were offered a free fix for one thing. By partnering with HIS Hair, Dr. Hill’s clinic has completed that list of options to include addressing hair loss. In return, HIS Hair have gone from having a fantastic hair loss treatment to being able to offer a solution for just about every conceivable aesthetic shortcoming you can think of, or look at, every day, on your own face, in your own mirror.

A Younger You

We are almost certainly preaching to the converted when talking to our SMP clients, they are already convinced about the ability of a treatment to make a profound change to both how they look and how that makes them feel about themselves. The fact is that relieving yourself of the burden that is fixating on a perceived shortcoming is a liberating experience.

Once you have had your free consultation the details of appropriate treatments will be explained to you. It is possible that more than one might be recommended to achieve optimum results.

Younger clients are increasingly both aware of the potential for improvement and willing to do something about it – including the boys. They might report with acne, warts, moles or skin tags. All are very treatable. As is Rosacea. Patients present with the full range of conditions associated with the passage of time.  They will point to scraggy necks, crows feet, bags under the eyes, jowls… or some combination of those. Even some surprising, to us, conditions can be addressed. Those dark circles under the eyes, along with the hollows they sit in, can be rejuvenated. Eyelids that have, over the years, developed their own gravity and become hoods for the eyes can be improved. As can lips that have lost their fullness. Oh, and you can get tattoos you have fallen out of love with removed.

HIS Hair Clinic

We cannot overstate how delighted we are to partner with Dr. Camilla Hill. Her reputation as an outstanding aesthetic doctor is rooted in her extensive GP experience, the expertise and understanding gained there perfectly shapes her to make sympathetic but accurate assessments on what might achieve the best possible outcomes.

We have covered the clinic and the conditions they treat, which leaves the treatments on offer… stay tuned for more on that. In the meantime, please click here to visit Dr. Hills site.

HIS Hair’s Newest Partner Goes Beyond Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 03:38

Why stop your makeover at scalp micropigmentation? We look at the work of Dr Camilla Hill who stands ready to complete your personal reinvention.

Males Grooming

HIS Hair Clinic clients come in all shapes and sizes with all cultural and age groups represented. What everyone has in common is a heartfelt desire to improve their appearance, and in doing so how they feel about themselves… and for anybody who has genuinely suffered with hair loss, scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, has the potential to completely reverse all those negative feelings.

That compulsion with their appearance is inevitably focused on their lack of hair. Once it has been addressed we often see our clients coming back for later treatments having made other significant changes. Maybe they have joined a gym, or rediscovered a long lost love for swimming or cycling. Often they have laid out money on improving their wardrobe. Some, more and more in recent times, have moved on past their hair loss and begun to take much better care of themselves through the use of products to improve the condition of their skin.

The experience of HIS Hair over the last decade is borne out by recent moves from some of the largest operators in the beauty industry. Earlier this year L’Oreal cut a deal with David Beckham to launch a huge range of grooming products aimed at men at the start of this year amid wider recognition of the huge latent value in this market.  All the major players now offer extensive male grooming products.

At the same time we have seen beauty clinics extent their offerings, both products and treatments, to male clients. These days those offerings reflect the diverse modern options for treating all manner of ailments.  As always the trick is to identify a reputable clinic operating to high standards and using only the very latest approved techniques. If you are lucky enough to live within reach of the HIS HQ in Birmingham, England we have taken care of that due diligence for one clinic in particular that we are delighted to partner with.

Dr Camilla Hill

Dr. Hill is a local girl. She qualified from Birmingham Medical School before enjoying a long career as a GP until more recently becoming a BUPA Consultant. In 2014 she trained as an aesthetics doctor and from delightfully located clinic, set in acres of green, in Barnt Green, Worcestershire, she now offers a complete range of the very latest treatments for all manner of problems.

With many of these treatments available in high street tanning salon type establishments – or worse, home visitors found on web adverts, where delivery might be performed by someone completely unqualified, it is vital you find your way to a clinic where the  credentials of your host are on full display and easily checked. You are, after all, considering something that may have permanent negative implications if done badly.

Dr. Camilla Hill’s clinic is exactly what you are looking for, an established clinic run by an experienced health professional, capable of understanding and considering any wider health implications before progressing to treatment… everyone receives a free consultation and some receive only free advice, on the basis that they are possibly overplaying some perceived minor imperfection and only in need of reassurance. It is the sort of clinic you would trust to look after someone you care about with their best interests at heart.

For our SMP clients who had never previously paid any attention to their crows feet, or saggy jowls, the qualities of Dr. Hill and her clinical team make it a relatively easy decision to do something about it… these are, after all, people who had the gumption to go for SMP.

HIS Hair Clinic

We will write again soon with some more detail on the treatments available. If you can’t wait for that, or simply want to read more about the services on offer, please click here to visit the website.

If you would like to discuss your hair loss situation with one of our team of friendly experts, simply complete the contact form at the side of this page or click here to find your nearest clinic.

Kay Koehler, CureSearch CEO

Kay Koehler, CureSearch CEO

We continue to highlight our team of superheroes for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, including Kay Koehler – CureSearch CEO. In February of 2018, CureSearch’s Board of Directors announced that Kay would take the leadership reins as CEO. As the former Chief Develoment Officer, Kay had been a critical part of the CureSearch executive team, responsible for leadership of CureSearch’s donor engagement, fundraising, marketing and communications efforts, effecting sweeping changes to position the organization for success.

CureSearch CEO Kay Koehler

We talked with Kay about her passion for CureSearch’s mission to end children’s cancer and how CureSearch is working differently to accelerate children’s cancer cures. Read what she had to say:

How does CureSearch work with partners, families and local communities to accelerate childhood cancer research and cures?

The importance of these relationships cannot be stressed enough; our partnerships and passionate supporters are crucial to driving collaborations, research and resources that are accelerating less-toxic treatments and children’s cancer cures. From a single volunteer at a Superheroes Unite! event to a pharmaceutical industry partner, we are creating a mission-critical ecosystem of supporters with a singular goal in mind – getting more and less-toxic therapies to the children who need them most, faster.

We’re also convening the necessary players – best in class scientists, academicians, industry leaders, financial experts and economists – to hold open and lively discussions focused on the current obstacles to developing new therapies for children. We’re doing this by bringing together the right people to expedite novel therapies out of the lab and into the clinic and marketplace to the children, parents and families that are counting on us. The CureSearch research strategy and the global community has rallied its support around these complex issues.

Which programs or resources that we offer at CureSearch make you the most proud?

CureSearch has a vast library of resources for patients and families looking for more information about children’s cancer cures, from an app that helps parents track medications to a video explaining immunotherapy treatments to kids. It’s important to us as an organization to not only raise funds for research, but to ensure that we are helping families facing an often devastating child cancer diagnosis by offering knowledge in areas such as treatment options or clinical trials while also providing emotional support. That is why I’m especially proud of our Superheroes Unite! and Ultimate Hike events. Both campaigns bring together families and communities to support kids with cancer and honor survivors and forever heroes – those who sadly lost their lives.

What makes CureSearch different from other similar organizations?

Drug development for children’s cancer is a complicated process that no one organization can manage alone. We cannot accept the current rate of drug development, with only four new therapies developed specifically for children in the last twenty years. We owe our children more.

CureSearch is hyper-focused on convening scientific and industry relationships so that leaders in their fields are working side-by-side to develop new drugs for children’s cancer. Today, so much of that happens in a vacuum, creating hurdles that slow down and even suppress progress. We have uniquely stepped up with innovative collaborations to fill the existing gaps in drug development for children’s cancer treatments. The response from science and industry has been overwhelmingly supportive.

We are committed to creating a cohesive pediatric cancer ecosystem, nationally and internationally, working collaboratively to save kids NOW and protect their futures. That is the hidden secret of survival statistics; up to 60% of childhood cancer survivors will have lifelong and debilitating side effects from their treatments, including recurring cancers and heart failure as young adults. I can’t imagine being the parent of an adorable four-year-old child that endures two to three years of cancer treatment and survives, only to be diagnosed with a terminal cancer the very summer we are preparing them to head off to college. It’s devastating and unacceptable.

That’s why we are passionate about funding top-tier and high potential pediatric cancer research projects through our comprehensive basic, translational and clinical trial research strategy – including the nearly $1.5 million that we funded through our Catapult and Young Investigator Awards this year. These research grants are vetted through the most rigorous process in the industry, ensuring that every dollar raised is having the greatest impact.

Why is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) important to you?

It highlights the urgency of our mission to cure children’s cancer. Every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. Across a spectrum of over 100 different types and subtypes of childhood cancers, only four cancer treatments have been developed and approved for children in the last two decades. Through CCAM, we can spread awareness of this critical need to bring everyone together to help each child live the long, healthy life he or she deserves.

We’ve made amazing strides in science in the last five years alone. But with only 4% of government cancer funding going to children’s cancer research, it’s up to us to fill the large need. Groundbreaking research that could hold the key to a child’s life often goes unfunded because financial resources are not available. This is why we don’t hesitate to ask for donations. We steward every dollar so that each person who supports us is truly making an impact on a child’s battle and knows that they are funding the most innovative science to drive results quickly – because our kids can’t wait.

——————–

Whether through volunteering, fundraising or donating today – you too can be part of the team that is working to end children’s cancer. This CCAM, be part of our team of superheroes and make a difference for every child fighting cancer.

Trichotillimania Hair Loss Explained

Unknown Reply 13:13

The poorly understood condition of trichotillimania, self-inflicted hair loss, is starting to get attention it the press. Time to bring you up to date on what we do know…

Trichotillimania

It turns out that far from being an incredibly rare condition trichotillimania might be affecting anything up to 3 or 4% of the population, with women something like three times more likely to suffer. It was only designated as an illness in 1987 and prior to that anyone reporting with the symptoms to their doctor, it often appears in the mid-teen years, would be given short shrift. Worse still, prevailing theories on the behaviour centred around the relationship between the sufferer and their parents, especially mothers, who were usually held responsible. The suggestion being that the hair pulling was borne of frustration at being emotionally shut out.

New Hope

There were other even more outlandish theories but none offering any sympathy or understanding. Fortunately attitudes have been slowly shifting since it officially became a recognised illness, along with some other behavioural issues like skin pulling. Studies, still small and at an early stage, have begun to unravel the secrets but it is fair to assess progress as minimal at this point.

One interesting theory, only backed up by some statistical analysis at this stage, is that the sufferer might be pulling as a way to regulate an internal state of sensory imbalance. The theory is based on the idea that some people are over stimulated by regular noises and touch. These people, the theory goes, pull their hair or pick their skin to offset that overload. A 2013 study found that people with these urges were more likely to have conditions such as anxiety.

Cure

At present there is no cure for trichotillimania. A couple of studies have been done and one compound did show some results… N-acetylcysteine, known as NAC, is sold over the counter in health food shops and proved helpful in up to 50% of the study group, although some of the placebo group experienced an improvement too.

Beyond medication good work is being done in training sufferers to spot the conditions that trigger the behaviour. Some, who successfully come through the process and end up owning their condition, describe the overall experience as character-building and one that they would not swap.

HIS Hair Clinic

Trichotillimania is under discussed and little understood. A blight on the life of anyone that suffers with it, many choose to mask the problem with make-up and wigs. Bringing it out into the open will make all the difference in the world.

Better Hair Starts In The Kitchen

Unknown Reply 08:34

Its a time of year when your hair might well benefit from a boost to its condition, we offer these home remedies based on products already in your kitchen…

Hair Health

Your hair is a pretty obvious signifier of your general health, shiny hair in good condition is symptomatic of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Hair in bad condition is slightly less indicative since the condition can be triggered by such a wide range of possible causes that it is almost impossible to judge by looking alone. However, study the hair a bit closer and it is possible to discover a great deal about the owners diet and general health.

As some of the fastest growing cells in the body hair requires a lot of energy. Because it is constantly sourcing its material it can reflect exactly what the owner was putting into him or herself for food, levels of alcohol and other toxins can also be measured. You can easily imagine then why what you put in has such a profound and quick effect on the appearance of your hair.

Reach for the Remedies

One of our favourite therapy sites, MindBodyGreen offered this overnight treatment as a cure for the end of summer ailments like dry, frizzy or damaged hair. According to what you need on your hair you should an oil that ticks the right box, moisturising, nourishing or repairing. Coconut or avocado are recommended for moisturising, apply by working in a generous amount of oil from the  middle of the hair shaft to the ends. If you are going for nourishment then jojoba or olive oil should be used, in this case you apply the oil into the scalp and work it all the way through the hair. Finally the repairing oils, meadowfoam seed oil and black cumin seed oil, are also applied into the scalp and worked all the way through.

Whichever oil you use you will want to put your hair up or into a shower cap for an absolute minimum of an hour, preferably overnight. You will then need to shampoo thoroughly, probably several times if using the coconut or avocado, before using conditioner. The oils will replenish your hair with moisture and help seal that moisture in.

HIS Hair Clinic

We are big fans of this sort of home remedy, one that costs virtually nothing and seems to make a lot of sense in terms of its claims of efficacy. Click here to read the original article.

CCAM Feature: Our Expert Advisory Councilor

At CureSearch, we set ourselves apart with the help of our world-class advisory councils. Among the many important things they do, one vital role is advising CureSearch on funding research with only the highest potential. Dr. Lee Helman is one of our expert advisory councilors who is part of the team working together towards children’s cancer cures. Learn more about Dr. Helman and why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is important to him.

Tell us about your background in childhood cancer research and your leadership in the space.

I began my career in pediatric oncology in 1983 when I began my fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). I was trained in internal medicine, and decided to spend six months doing pediatric oncology and six months doing medical oncology during my first year of fellowship training.

I was so impressed with the courage of the children I cared for that I decided that I wanted to study pediatric cancers in the laboratory so that I could contribute to better outcomes for these courageous patents. I started the next year in a laboratory studying neuroblastoma, and after five years of training in that laboratory, was given the opportunity to start my on laboratory studying pediatric sarcomas.

I have basically spent my entire career studying these tumors and have had the privilege of contributing to some progress in the treatment of these tumors. Over my thirty years at the NCI, I spent 10 years as chief of the Pediatric Oncology Branch, and then nine years as Scientific Directory for Clinical Research NCI, before moving in 2017 to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as the Head of Basic and Translational Research in the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases.

Dr. Lee Helman

What big trends can we expect to see with childhood cancer research and treatments in the next five years?

I believe there will be at least two major themes that will emerge over the next five years in pediatric oncology. Firstly, based on the success of CAR-T cell therapy in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), we will continue to see the evolution of immune-based therapies in the treatment of pediatric cancer. Secondly, we will see the emergence of “precision medicine” or “targeted therapy” in the treatment of more pediatric cancers. As we begin to generate a deeper understanding of the genomic landscape of individual tumors, we will see more studies aimed at targeting specific genetic abnormalities in specific patients. Finally, I hope we will see the development of combined immunotherapy/targeted therapy approaches in the treatment of children.

Tell us about someone who made an impact on your life, pushing you towards the childhood cancer field.

When I came to the NCI in 1983 to train as an oncologist, Dr. Phil Pizzo, who at the time was the Chief of the Pediatric Oncology Branch, offered me the opportunity to spend six months treating children with cancer, even though I was trained in internal medicine. I spent my first six months of fellowship in the pediatric oncology branch, working with children and young adults battling for their lives. I also worked closely with the senior physicians in the branch, and was convinced after six months that I wanted to spend the rest of my career taking care of these courageous children and working to find better treatments for these diseases. I give much of this credit to Dr. Pizzo, who taught me so much as was a role model.

What do you wish the general public knew about childhood cancer?

I hope that the public recognizes two major issues that we face in the field of pediatric cancer. First, most people understand that we have made incredible progress in curing more and more children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. But they often do not recognize that this cure comes with a cost. That cost is the side effects we often see in patients treated as young children. They often begin to develop long-term side effects of their treatment often twenty years or longer after they have been cured. These late effects include cardiac, pulmonary and kidney damage long after their curative treatment has occurred, as well as effects on fertility and worst of all an increased risk of second cancers. This is why we must continue to find better treatments today, to minimize the long-term effects that we will see 20 or more years from now.

Second, I wish everyone would understand that in spite of our great successes, these have not occurred across all pediatric tumor types. For example, pediatric brain tumors remain a highly lethal disease, as do certain types of sarcomas that I have spent my career treating and studying. We are just now beginning to see “the light at the end of the tunnel” in some of these difficult to treat tumors, and we need support for research now more than ever to bring more effective treatment to all children diagnosed today with cancer.

Why do you choose to support CureSearch and our mission?

I believe that CureSearch is dedicated to finding better outcomes for all children diagnosed with cancer, and that is why I support your mission.

Why is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month important to you?

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for all of us to take stock in how much progress we have made in treating children with cancer, and how much more we have to do. And it allows those of us involved in working for children with cancer to thank everyone who has contributed to this progress and remind us all to keep pushing for better outcomes for all our kids.

CCAM Feature: The Saal Family Beats the Odds

We continue our Childhood Cancer Awareness Month features with a story of one child beating the brain cancer odds. The Saal family story serves to remind us why we continue to fight together to find cures for childhood cancer. As a united team of superheroes and sidekicks, we will continue to fund research to find less-toxic treatments and cures so that kids like Camryn and her family never have to battle cancer. Hear more from the Saal family about how they beat the odds.

Tell us about your connection to childhood cancer and CureSearch.

Our daughter Camryn was diagnosed with primitive neuro ectodermal tumor (PNET) when she was seven. PNET is a rare cancer that affects 400 kids worldwide annually. Camryn had three tumors in her brain and her spinal cord was covered with small tumors. She had a 20% chance of survival. Camryn went through a protocol developed by the Children’s Oncology Group while she was being treated at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was able to beat her cancer and is a happy 14-year-old girl today. We are beyond blessed to still have our daughter with us and we give thanks every day for her. We’ve come to realize that treatments aren’t perfect. Camryn has long-term effects from her treatment. We feel treatments and success rates have a long way to go and because of that, we started a foundation to give back.

Camryn Saal

Tell us about your efforts for children’s cancer research and CureSearch’s Gold DIY program.

We decided to give the funds from our fundraiser to the CureSearch Gold DIY program because we know the money is going directly to research. The event is simply to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure.

Why do you think it’s important for everyone to work together for children’s cancer cures?

We were affected by many great organizations during Camryn’s battle, however no other organization played a bigger role in her survival than the organization that developed the trial she was a part of. Research and trials will provide the paths to curing this awful disease, but without funding we will continue to “change” kids or just simply lose them.

What would you say to another family who may be going through a childhood cancer diagnosis?

We have talked to many parents that are dealing with a child with cancer. First off, you have to stay positive. We never focused on the fact that Camryn had an 80% chance of dying. We only talked about her being in the 20%. We didn’t focus on all the things they said could happen. We focused on what we could control why she was going through treatment. Was she receiving the best care possible? Are we doing everything we can to ensure she stays healthy when her counts are low? What can we do to make our child happy during this tough time? Secondly, we focused on family. We communicated a ton and we tried to keep life as normal as possible, which is really tough. Cancer doesn’t only affect the child with cancer. It affects siblings, moms, dads – everyone. Everyone needs a lot of love during the fight. Finally, we got closer to God. We prayed a ton.

Camryn Saal Portrait

Why do you support CureSearch?

We were affected by many great organizations during Camryn’s battle, however no other organization played a bigger role in her survival than the organization that developed the trial she was a part of. The trial gave us hope we would be in the 20% survival group. I remember spending time praying the arm of the trial Camryn was assigned would be the most successful and affective. Research and trials funded by CureSearch will provide the paths to curing this awful disease. The more support, funding, and awareness we can raise, the more kids we will save.

Describe the non-profit you created on Camryn’s behalf.

Brains for Hope is a not for profit foundation designed to raise funds and awareness in the fight again pediatric cancer. Throughout our daughter’s fight we were exposed to so many great organizations that helped us. We were compelled to give back and felt like we had a good platform to build on. We operate in Fort Wayne, IN and hold fundraising events to achieve our mission. Our team is small. My wife, Maggie and I plan and coordinate everything with an unbelievable team of friends, most of which we were right by our side through Camryn’s fight. Our goal is to have two events each year, continue to grow, give back and have an impact.

Saal Family

Why is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month important to you?

It is very important to us because of the awareness factor. Many other cancer awareness months have grown tremendously over the years and have support from major organizations that are in the public’s eye every day. This type of exposure generates public support. We hope that one day, Pediatric cancer awareness month will be on the same level. Ultimately, we want the month to be a celebration of great breakthroughs in treatments and huge increases in survival rates.

You too can join our team of supporters, partners, industry leaders and researchers who are changing the face of childhood cancer! Consider getting involved with CureSearch, or if you haven’t already – donate today to help fund research for kids like Camryn.

West Coast Holiday Hair Loss Warning

Unknown Reply 09:06

If your holiday sees you heading for the West Coast of America we have a hair loss warning for you. Read on… African Americans, Hispanics, Phillipinos and Native Americans all have an increased genetic vulnerability to the fungus.

Valley Fever

So what is valley fever? When you learn it is primarily found on the West Coast of the United States, California and Arizona being particular hotspots, you might be forgiven for thinking it is a stress related condition bought on by working in the high tech industries. You couldn’t be further from the truth. Rather than a modern lifestyle illness this is an ancient fungal disease to which African Americans, Hispanics, Phillipinos and Native Americans all have an increased genetic vulnerability to the fungus. It lives underground, just beneath the surface, in dry desert soil. When the ground is disturbed by activity, machine animal or weather, the spores can be lifted into the air and breathed in. If the spores are lifted during a dust storm the spores can be spread for hundreds of miles.

Most people will recover fairly quickly from the flu like symptoms, for many though complete recovery might take months. If you allow your condition to deteriorate, in a case where you don’t recover on your own, you may develop a nasty long-term form of pneumonia. In the worst cases the fungal infection can spread beyond the lungs and cause additional problems… and this is where the risk to hair comes in.

Is The Cure Worse Than The Ailment

There are a range of possible complications when the fungus moves out of the lungs and into other parts of the body. At the top end they include meningitus. Since this means that there is a potential outcome that involves the risk of death it is fair to conclude that some side-effects might be acceptable in the treatment.

Flucanazole is the preferred treatment route for persistent valley fever in patients. It does come with a decent spread of side-effects however. Some of which are pretty unpleasant, cracked lips and nose bleeds among them. But surely the worst is the potentially severe hair loss that can even affect your eyebrows and eyelashes – which must come as a terrible shock to someone who is already suffering badly from the valley fever.

HIS Hair Clinic

So if Vegas, LA or San Fran are on your list of destinations, be aware. The fungus extends down through Central America and into much of South America too. Stay in during dust storms and avoid gardening on your vacation would seem to be sensible advice.

Interesting Findings From Hair Loss Research

Unknown Reply 15:47

Researchers have been busy getting mice hairy again, but their hair loss research has thrown up some interesting facts. We look closer.

The Study

John Hopkins University School of Medicine have been working on hair loss, news that is guaranteed to pique our interest. Subroto Chatterjee is a professor of pediatrics and medicine there and has been providing some fascinating updates on their efforts. His team have been looking at a compound which, they claim, is able to halt the production of glycosphingolipids, thankfully shortened to GSL’s. GSL’s are major components of many cell membranes including skin cells and have been linked by earlier studies to diets rich in fat and cholesterol… which, let’s face it, is what western diets have given to the world. Research has shown that mice fed diets high in fat and cholesterol will develop extensive hair loss and discolouration as well as skin inflammation.

The researchers from John Hopkins started their study by genetically modifying a group of mice to have atheroclosis, a disease bought on by a western diet and sees arteries clogged with deposits of fat. They then split the mice into two groups with one being fed a rich western diet and the second group regular mouse food. Predictably, the western diet fed mice came off pretty badly. They suffered from skin lesions and a lack of pigment in their hair, worse though, from our point of view, was the extensive hair loss. From 20 to 36 weeks of age both groups were supplied with the man-made compound, called D-PDMP, though some were given higher concentrations than others.

Results

The outcomes for the mice in the study were positive. Even the mice fed the western diet showed profound improvement.. but it was the analysis of the results that caught our eye. They used mass spectrometry to to identify and count some key lipid levels, of ceramides which are key to the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Even more interestingly, to us at least, was that they noted those western fed mice experienced an invasion of white blood cells known as neutrophils to infiltrate the skin. During treatment the compound was shown to significantly reduce the presence of these neutrophils.

HIS Hair Clinic

Always great to read about serious research being done on hair loss. And we know that studies on mice can be a long way from an approved treatment… but it is was an important finding of this study that the mice receiving different amounts of D-PDMP were seen to get identical benefits – leaving the door open for the treatment to be in the form of a simply capsule. We will watch closely for progress.

Green Tea For Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 14:12

Green tea has a reputation as being useful to those suffering from hair loss, where does that reputation come from, and is it true. We take a closer look.

Green Tea In History

In fact, green tea is something of a simplification as a description. All green tea is made with leaves from the Camellia Sinensis, which itself has many varieties and all are used to produce slightly different green teas. Beyond the source material the principal difference between green tea when compared to oolong or black tea, is that they are not subjected to the dessication and oxidation inflicted on the others. This, in theory, makes for a healthier version of the beverage due to more of the original complexity being retained through the production process.

The popularity of green tea in it’s original homeland of China, is credited to a book written by Lu Yu somewhere between 600 and 900AD. A later book, still some 800 years old, described how the consumption of green tea could affect five organs… along with a complete how-to guide on the horticulture of the plant.

Benefits

We know more about the complicated make-up of green tea than ever before. We know that it contains many more flavanoids and catechins than other foods considered healthy. A typical serving of one cup is of course almost entirely water, with one part in a thousand being something else. As well as those catechins and flavanoids there are phytochemicals like caffeine and polyphenols.

Green tea is imbued with an amazing array of health related properties, we are concentrating on those claims that relate to hair loss. Starting with that impressive list of compounds as the basis for  it’s reputation as an anti-inflammatory, it is claimed that they combine to offer some protection against hair loss. One polyphenol in particular, with the name Epigalletocatechin Gallate, EGCG, has serious claims made around its specific benefits for hair loss. In addition, we have seen claims that the antioxidants are able to destroy free radicals, which in turn are claimed to reduce circulation… so the theory predicts that improved circulation will improve supply of nutrients to the follicles.

Used as a rinse for your hair it has more benefit, its anti-bacterial properties, they say, can rid you of fungal parasites on your scalp.

HIS Hair Clinic

Nothing in the last 800 years since the legend of green tea was born has proved it. Even with our modern tools we are only able to better understand what comprises green tea. The whole science around free radicals has recently been challenged and nobody has shown that those flavanoids and catechins have any health benefits, of any kind, let alone for your hair. Drink green tea if you like it, it is almost certainly the healthiest of drinks around. But we are basing that on the absence of harmful ingredients as much as anything else.

College Student and Childhood Cancer Survivor Advocates for Children’s Cancer Research

Samantha with dogUp until she was 11-years-old, Samantha Sowa was like most girls her age – she loved spending time with her family, traveling to new cities and playing with friends. That all changed when she was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma. Doctors were baffled to see this particular type of cancer in someone so young and her family was completely devastated. Samantha took a vow to stay positive and keep the family composed and together throughout her entire cancer journey.

“Throughout my entire journey, which lasted more than a year, I had two surgeries, two doses of radioactive iodine, some biopsies, countless neck ultrasounds, full-body scans and bloodworm,” said Sowa. “The first surgery was to remove my entire thyroid, a parathyroid, and a lymph node and the second surgery almost a year later was to remove the surrounding lymph nodes that looked cancerous. My family and I were, of course, very nervous with every treatment, but remained hopeful and never lost our faith.”

Sowa beat childhood cancer and she’s currently in remission. Today Samantha is an actuarial science student at North Central College, but her cancer journey sparked a deep passion for childhood cancer research fundraising. She even spent her senior year of high school working on research project to help uncover the factors that influence a donor to give for childhood cancer research and recently did a TedX talk at her university highlighting the importance of childhood cancer research.

Samantha at TEDX talk

Her passion doesn’t end there. Samantha became involved with CureSearch in 2012, and currently sits on a Superheroes Unite! volunteer committee. She is fundraising for the 2018 CureSearch Superheroes Unite! event in Chicago to help raise awareness of the urgency of CureSearch’s mission to end children’s cancer.

“Become aware of the facts and statistics of childhood cancer and realize that cancer not only impacts adults, but harms children as well. I encourage everyone to get to know a childhood cancer patient or survivor, because their scar also has a story, and that story might bring us one step closer to finding a cure,” said Sowa. “Childhood cancer research is vastly underfunded, and we currently have minimal government support, so childhood cancer research organizations rely on private donors to help.”

Scalp Shine And How To Fix It

Unknown Reply 07:37

Scalp shine comes up as a question on the forum on a regular basis. So we look to gather the contributions and try to make sense of them.

Head Shine

For some it simply isn’t a problem, they either do not suffer with it or do and don’t care… much like hair loss itself. But like hair loss if it is something that bothers you it can become a serious encumbrance to enjoying yourself in lots of social situations.

Fortunately there are plenty of options on what to do, from highly priced commercial products to the received wisdom of the kitchen sink heroes who have walked the path less travelled, and come back to the forum to leave a trail.  Nothing will work for everyone and a certain amount of experimentation is required to see what does the trick for you.

Commercial

Over the last few years the pharmaceutical companies have cottoned on to the fact that male grooming extends to wanting to take care of a bare scalp, with shine obviously popping up in their blue sky product development meetings as a market opportunity. As a consequence there are a never ending stream of new products offering solutions that add to our lexicon with words like “mattifying.”

It is a market that the giants like L’Oreal, with an anti-shine moisturising gel, and Clinique, with Mens Oil Control Mattifying Moisturiser, have entered the market with fancy and expensive products. Headblade, the shaver manufacturer, have also joined in with their HeadLube moisturizing lotion. Peter Roth Anti-Shine is one that has been around a while and gets positive feedback on the boards. In fact, put “reduce scalp shine” into google today and you will be offered page after page of products that claim to be able to do just that.

Home Remedies

The over the counter solutions all have something in common, they are typically expensive. Definitely expensive if you are getting through a tube/jar a day. So there are lots of people out there who have experimented to find alternative, more everyday, solutions. Milk of Magnesia is one that has popped up time and again over the years, with many positive reviews. More recently there was a very good shout for Diatomaceous Earth (DE), which you can order on the internet very cheaply. Apparently a tiny amount rubbed in with the palm of your hand is enough to do the job, our poster “Majty” estimates that a bag could last a lifetime (he did not give an indication of how big the bag was).

HIS Hair Clinic

It is worth mentioning that shiny skin, on the face, has been an “issue” for women for centuries, if not millennia. Because of that there are countless products, many cheap and effective, that do a great job… we appreciate not everyone will want to step out with a compact full of powder, but it does do a great job.

Here is a link to a great forum thread featuring a few suggestions from  clients generously sharing information on what worked for them. One or more of them will work for you too.

Minoxidil, Hair Loss Drug Or Hair Of The Dog

Unknown Reply 07:31

News reaches us that Minoxidil has turned up at the heart of a trial investigating a greyhound race in the UK. We look closer…

Minoxidil

Minoxidil has been around for a long time and has featured in countless articles on these pages. As one of only two FDA approved hair loss medications on the market it has become a go-to product for many hair loss sufferers.

It was developed by a company called Upjohn, later to become part of Pfizer, in the late 1950’s with the intention of treating ulcers. Around 200 variations of the compound were produced and eventually, in 1979, one of them would be approved by the FDA as an oral tablet to treat high blood pressure.

Later they would receive permission to test the drug for its efficacy in treating hypertension. In the second of two studies they noted unexpected hair growth in the number of the study patients… and the rest is history. It would take until 1988 for the FDA to approve minoxidil as a hair loss treatment, though by then the study results were already seeing many doctors supplying it off-label to their patients suffering with hair loss. Three years later, in 1991, the product would also be approved for women in a landmark moment… it remains the only FDA approved hair loss product available to women.

Hair For The Dog

Despite being familiar with the development history of minoxidil, which has seen it used in a variety of ways,  we were surprised to learn that it can be used as a performance enhancer for greyhounds. Apparently, according to the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, who certainly sound like they should know, it has a stimulating effect on the heart and can therefore affect a greyhound’s performance and prejudice its well-being.

It came to our attention when an owner, Derek Ogden, was bought before the Board accused of deliberately doping his hound, Donnington Lady, with minoxidil prior to a race. No doubt their attention was drawn when the hound, a rank outsider at 7/1, absolutely romped home to win by 6 lengths.

Derek the owner had claimed the dog became contaminated through contact with another hound he had deliberately given the drug to. The Board were having none of it and found against him, delivering a fine of £1500 and a severe reprimand.

HIS Hair Clinic

Derek the owner would have to have bet over £200 to have made a profit  on the deal, given the scale of his fine. Just some food for thought. It was the minoxidil reference that caught our eye, not whether it is possibly profitable to dope greyhounds even if you’re caught. We find it interesting that it was developed for use in humans to potentially decrease blood pressure, but in fact it can turn an ordinary greyhound into a four-legged Usain Bolt. Strikes us as strange, no wonder it can put hairs on some people though.

Hair Loss Hero Takes Us By Surprise

Unknown Reply 15:40

Gail Porter is one of our favourite hair loss heroes and in the past has shown plenty of capacity to surprise. Her latest stunt really caught us out…

Gail Porter – The Making Of A Hero

13 years ago Gail Porter was enjoying an enviable career in media as a UK TV personality. Her easy Scottish charm saw her land presenting jobs as a young girl fresh out of media college. She fronted shows including Top of the Pops and Live and Kicking, immersing herself into the trendy music set… her partner was the enigmatic Keith Flint, frontman and reported firestarter for The Prodigy, the successful British dance act. But in 2005 her life was changed forever by alopecia.  An image of her, naked with her back to camera and smiling over her shoulder, would become infamous when it was projected onto the Houses of Parliament building in London, England. It was part of a guerilla marketing campaign which Gail claims to have known nothing about until the following day.

Hair Loss

Gail, from the moment of her diagnosis, chose not to run and hide under a wig. Instead she opted to stand up and talk about her problem on behalf of the thousands of poorly understood victims of the same illness who had no voice of their own… something for which we have always admired her.

She has also spoken out about her bipolar disorder, another super challenging condition that sufferers live with every day, yet continues to campaign for a number of charities to this day, including giving time to the Little Princess Charity, which provides young girls suffering from hair loss with wigs made from real hair donated by well-wishers.

On a recent episode of Loose Women, a UK daytime magazine show aimed at all women (not just loose ones), Gail shared that she had decided to be fitted for a wig. Last week she appeared on the show again to have the resulting wig fitted. Her emotional reaction to seeing herself with hair again was lovely to watch, she was initially overcome and some tears were shed… she worried about the reaction of her daughter briefly but decided she got used to her being bald, she would get used to her in a wig.

HIS Hair Clinic

Gail has no intention of slowing down her campaigning and insists the wig will only be worn part-time, she has apparently got very used to being bald after all this time. Whatever she decides to do is fine by us, it would have been easy to have confused Gail with so many of the bimbos who get the sort of work she did when she was young. But Gail has gone on to prove she was so much more than that, she wrote an autobiography back in 2007 called “Laid Bare” – Maybe it’s time for an update?

How Does Smoking Affect Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 04:50

We all know that smoking is the singular lifestyle choice that has the most dramatic impact on our health, but exactly how does smoking impact on our hair and can it promote hair loss? We look closer.

Smoking Is Bad For You

Obvious isn’t it? Of course it is. But one glance at the advertising for cigarettes in the 1950’s would tell you that this was not always the accepted state of affairs. Smoking was cool, smoking got you the girl and everybody who was anybody did it. Hollywood stars who did not smoke in the private lives would light up for their scenes. Cigarettes were ubiquitous. There were dissenting voices even then, hospital doctors were under no illusion that smoking was responsible for the huge numbers of cancers that they were treating their patients for.

In fact, the truth was that by 1953 the tobacco industry had conducted it’s own research, who can forget the images of chain smoking beagles, which showed unequivocally that their products were highly carcinogenic. Unfortunately, they saw fit to keep their discovery a secret. As disgraceful chapters in corporate history go it is right up there and it would be another 12 years, in 1965 before the Surgeon General would enforce a health warning be added to the packaging. The road since then has been studded with ever more health enforcement, huge taxes imposed to reduce sales and increasing the size and impact of the warnings on packaging… so that today anyone buying any tobacco product will be confronted by pictures of the health outcomes suffered by other smokers. In the UK tobacco has to be sold in plain packaging and from behind screens in the store… so the product is not visible. Advertising tobacco is completely banned. In the face of this assault on their business tobacco companies have seen their sales in the Western world plummet, particularly in the face of competition from E Cigarettes which reduce the vast range of toxins present in tobacco to just the one that forces the habit, nicotine.

Hair Loss

Studies have now proven that the harmful chemicals in cigarettes can have drastic effects on your body. They are capable of altering your DNA and reducing the effectiveness of your immune system. They can also reduce your blood flow. For hair this is a particular problem, as some of the fastest growing cells in the human body they are negatively affected by any reduction in blood flow. Some studies have shown that smoking can also cause oxidative stress that damages the growth of the follicle stem cells. That combination is capable of inflicting, or accelerating, hair loss. Even the relatively harmless E Cigarettes are thought to  cause damage to epidermal cells.
