Hair Loss – 6 Things You Must Stop Doing

Unknown Reply 06:27

What can I do? It is a reasonable and normal reaction to discovering hair loss. A better question might be what should I stop doing? We offer some thoughts.

Hair Loss First Contact

Whether it is hairs on your pillow, or in the plughole, noticing it yourself while grooming, or maybe the worst of all… having it pointed out to you by friend or foe. We all remember the moment we discovered that the hair we had grown to love was no longer playing the game. The discovery will affect people differently. Some will carry on regardless, not bothered in the slightest. For some though, especially younger sufferers, it is a catastrophic experience.

Reaction

For those sufferers who decide they need to do something about it there are no shortage of options, or access to them. Within 24 hours of discovering your hair loss the internet can show you dozens of alternative methods, from FDA approved drugs to wild-eyed medicine men offering some pretty outrageous “modern” techniques. Then there are the millions of pages written on the benefits of various traditional treatments… from yucca plants and onion juice to cow saliva and pigeon poo (we have seen them all).

Here we offer a simpler list, of things that you should cut out of your lifestyle to achieve healthier hair.

1 – Stop combing or brushing your hair when wet. A simple piece of advice but the hair is at its weakest when wet and pulling on it with the teeth of a comb or brush can be damaging. Instead use your fingers to tease out the worst and then wait for the hair to dry to brush properly.

2 – Stop eating junk food. Or at the very least make sure you get the balance and intake of vitamins our hair needs. Vitamins A and E are essential. So plenty of nuts and seeds would be a simple way to introduce a snack that ticks the boxes.

3 – Stop ignoring your scalp. Treat your scalp to a regular massage, you can use essential oils like almond which are thought to help hair follicles remain healthy.

4 – Don’t be lazy. Physical exercise is good for what ails you, and this is definitely true for hair loss. Exercise will improve your circulation and reduce the amount of stress hormones in your system… both of which are beneficial to healthy hair.

5 – Do not ignore home remedies. It is understandable that many will head for the pharmacy and start using one of the two FDA approved products, though some are put off by the warning label on a product that is a lifelong commitment. Whether you use them or not you should still consider some of the traditional home remedies, typically these are mixtures based on ingredients recognised as having beneficial properties like garlic and onion… you will of course want to rinse thoroughly after use.

6 – Stop smoking. Enough said.

HIS Hair Clinic

A healthy scalp is something we should all aspire to and do something about. This is never more true than for those who have been right through the balding process and find themselves with advanced hair loss… where the scalp is permanently on show. But even those with a full head of hair, currently, should be mindful of their scalp health and its potential for impact on their hair.

Stem Cell Cure For Hair Loss – The Latest

Unknown Reply 05:52

Stem cell research has been touted as a potential cure for hair loss for some time now, what is the latest? We take a closer look.

Stem Cells

In case you have been avoiding any and all scientific reading for years we will briefly explain what a stem cell is. They are the embryonic starting position for all life, we all begin as a small bundle of “pluripotent” cells. That is, cells which have the capacity to develop into any other type of cell in the human body… Brain, lung, heart, teeth, eyes and of course hair follicles. They were first identified by a couple of Canadian scientists, Till and McCulloch, who were studying bone marrow in mice and observed cells that self generated. It would take nearly 30 years from that point until, in 1998, a team developed a method to derive stem cells from human embryos and grow those cells in a laboratory.

Bump In The Road

Under enormous pressure from the religious right President George Bush signed an executive order, requiring no vote in Congress or the Senate, which banned federally funded stem cell research on embryonic stem cells. While this did not halt the research it certainly slowed things down.

Progress

Fortunately for stem cell research the USA is not the only game in town, the executive order simply shifted the research abroad to Europe, the East and the Middle East. That research has led to a much improved understanding of their processes. We now know that stem cells self generate in certain conditions within the body (or in the lab) to produce daughter cells which can self-renew… into either more stem cells or they can differentiate to become specialised cells. Stem cells are found throughout the body in bone, skin, marrow and fat.

Las year Italian researchers performed the first “successful” transplant of hair stem cells. It was considered a success because everything went according to procedure. The scalp of the patient was punctured to retrieve stem cells, those cells are then multiplied in vitro and the larger population of cells is injected back into the scalp in the region affected by the hair loss.

State of Play

Today there are many clinics working on stem cell research as it relates to hair loss. The result is a multi faceted approach with a wide range of techniques… one uses liposuction to retrieve body fat, which is then stripped of its stem cells before they are injected into the scalp.

The fact is that all these techniques ultimately face the same challenge. Nobody has yet worked out the issue of orientation of the new follicles, which can grow out in any direction.

HIS Hair Clinic

We scour the news on a daily basis for updates on any and all of these research projects. We recognise that this is the bleeding edge of medical research and many of these projects will fail at trial, so it is notable that none of them have yet applied for FDA approval. That does not mean there are not stem cell techniques on offer, just that none of them have been through thorough double blind clinical trials which satisfy the FDA. When that changes we will be shouting it from the rooftops.

New Chemo Hair Loss Cure In Pipeline

Unknown Reply 10:01

News from Taipai reaches us that a team of researchers are claiming success in their search for a cure to the problem of hair loss associated with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy Hair Loss

Hair loss is a deeply distressing and unwelcome side-effect of the harsh chemicals used during chemotherapy. The drugs used during chemo have been deliberately developed to target fast growing cells and unfortunately hair cells are among the fastest in the body. This results in the majority of patients losing most or all of their hair at a time when they are undergoing a traumatic treatment for cancer.

Cooling Caps

The relatively recent arrival of Cooling Caps onto the market gave these patients an option for the first time. These devices are designed to fit over the scalp and super cool it during the chemo session, the theory being that the reduced blood flow to the region reduces the exposure to the harsh chemicals. They have a variable prognosis with many patients still experiencing complete hair loss. Just the same, they were a welcome addition for a problem affecting so many and with nothing already on offer.

New Research

Reported in Focus Taiwan we spotted a story on some local research that could really make a difference to chemo patients, offering the promise of a cure… though there is a big but.

A team at the National Taiwan University, led by Lin Sung-Jan, a professor of biomedical engineering, were conducting stem cell research using fluorescent gene targeting as part of a broader cross-field research programme being conducted by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

They discovered that in the period immediately after being exposed to low level radiation the hair follicles exhibited some unusual behaviour. Instead of activating bulge stem cells to repair the damage they produced some atypical stem cells at the base of the bulb. They went on to discover that with a protein injection they could disrupt that process, tests on animals would show that these injections were effective in preventing “genotoxicity induced” hair loss of the type suffered by chemotherapy patients.

HIS Hair Clinic

This is fantastic news given that today some women refuse to undergo chemotherapy due to the high risk of hair loss. For the majority that do go through with treatment and suffer the hair loss it is a cruel blow at such a difficult time, one that marks you out to strangers as unwell when you just desperately want to be treated as normal. The big but we mentioned earlier is the prognosis for getting these injections to market. Professor Lin told Focus Taiwan (see the original article by clicking here) that they are currently negotiating with foreign companies to conduct human trials though a commercial product is not likely within 10 years in his estimation. We will be watching all the way.

Study Points To Hair Loss Cure Hope

Unknown Reply 15:09

Researchers in Manchester, England have enjoyed great success with their novel treatment for hair loss. We look closer.

Ancient Receptors

The study conducted by a team from the University of Manchester, led by Professor Ralf Paus, have discovered a remarkable, previously unknown, property of hair follicles. They possess an ability to receive messages using ancient receptors that were originally used for sensing smell.

The Theory

The sense of smell is triggered when molecules are recognised by special cells in the nose, but it turns out these processes are not confined to the inside of the nose. The same pathways areused to help regulate a whole host of other cell functions, among them hair growth.

The team were working on a receptor called OR2AAT4 which is found on the outer layer of hair follicles… What was really remarkable was that the receptor responded to the “smell” of sandalwood, or at least the smell of Sandalore, a synthetic sandalwood used by industry to perfume products. By applying sandalore they were able to produce “substantial, clinically relevant functional hair growth effects.”

Professor Paus explained to the UK newspaper The Independent the reason behind his excitement, “This is the first time ever that it has been shown that the re-modelling of a normal human mini-organ (a hair) can be regulated by a simple, cosmetically widely-used odorant.”

Prospects

The report in the Independent says that a product is already on the shelves in Italy, though they might be jumping the gun ever so slightly. A “very small” preliminary study performed with just 20 female volunteers was said to have shown positive results. A larger clinical trial is now underway with results expected to be delivered sometime after the new year.

HIS Hair Clinic

The Independent article also quotes Dr Nicola Clayton from the British Association of Dermatologists who, although not involved in the study, described the results as very exciting and the concept of a hair follicle being able to “smell” and for that to have an effect as “fascinating.”

We will naturally be on the lookout for any updates on this interesting and original line of research. Click here to see the original article on the Independent website.

Pfizer Hair Loss Cure Goes To Phase 3 Trials

Unknown Reply 14:14

Following exciting results from their Phase 2A study, Pfizer will now be sponsoring Phase 3 trials for a “game-changing” hair loss cure. We look closer.

Pfizer

The presence of Pfizer in this story adds real credence to these results, with the promise that their deep pockets, allied with the absence of anything currently available on the market, could see the first true hair loss cure come to market. They are American based and the second largest independent biotech company in the world with turnover in excess of $2.5B.

Phase 2A Trials

A randomized placebo-controlled study evaluated two drugs for safety and efficacy in the treatment of two of the more distressing variants of alopecia, totalis and universalis. Totalis is an extreme form of alopecia that can see the sufferer lose all body hair from the scalp. Universalis goes a step beyond that and can see the sufferer lose all hair from the body, including eyebrows.

The drugs were so-called JAK inhibitors which work by interrupting a key messaging gateway that, left unchecked, can damage the hairs ability to grow and see follicles getting trapped in the rest phase.

Results

One note of caution here should be that these study findings have bot yet been published or peer reviewed. Nevertheless the study team are bullish on their prospects and the yet-to-be-shared results have convinced Pfizer to invest significantly in the next phase of trials.

According to University of Melbourne professor, Rodney Sinclair, who presented the findings at a Dermatology and Venereology congress in Paris last week, the results are potentially life-changing for those living with alopecia. He said “Both compounds performed significantly beter than placebo in patients with alopecia totalis and alopecia unversalis. Both JAK inhibitors were safe and well tolerated.

HIS Hair Clinic

A final note of caution should be that when a man of medicine tells you something is safe and well tolerated it is worth drilling down. In fact, there were several patients on the study who suffered adverse reactions to some degree, and a couple of patients for whom the adverse reaction was considered serious… however, the problem ceased as soon as the medication was ceased.

We await publication of the results before getting too excited.. we are aware that the study team are only comparing the results to the placebo effect so there remains the possibility that the final medication, as with existing hair loss cures, will be something of a disappointment to the sufferer hoping for more.

Yucca For Hair Loss?

Unknown Reply 08:14

The Yucca plant has been used by Americans, South and Native, for millennia, for it’s medicinal benefits including hair loss. But can it really help? We look closer.

Yucca

The Yucca plant is easily identified by its long sword shaped leaves, when in flower those leaves are crowned with a tall crop of white or off-white flowers. There are a total of 49 species that grow in an amazing range of climates from subtropical to rocky desert. Because of that versatility there are found as far south as Guatemala with a home range that extends up through Mexico and New Mexico, where they are the State emblem, and as far north as southern Alberta. You can also find them on the islands of the Caribbean.

Uses

Native and South Americans have long valued the Yucca for a range of reasons, though not the one they are best know for these days. Today they are most widely cultivated as an ornamental garden plant where they provide a dramatic feature used indoors or out.

Edible Flowers

Those white, or off-white, flowers can be blanched for a few minutes before being added to meals as a flavouring.

Practical

Those tough sword shaped leaves are stron enough to make baskets and sharp enough to puncture meat. Native and South Americans use them to create loops from which they hang meat to be cured either with salt or smoke.

Medicinal

Of most interest to us of course are the medicinal properties of Yucca. It can be taken internally as a digestive and to reduce constipation, but that is not really our area of interest. The Yucca are loaded with saponins, one of nature’s cleansers. This has seen Yucca popping up as an ingredient in shampoos that are marketed at people with scalp conditions including hair loss. They are promoted as being able to remove swelling and redness as well as being a dandruff cure.

You can buy Yucca root which then needs to be peeled and mashed prior to application directly to the scalp, and thoroughly rinsed off afterwards. Alternatively you can head to your local health food store and buy the root in powder form.

HIS Hair Clinic

If the question is does Yucca stop hair loss he answer would seem to be a resounding no. But as part of a wider routine that involves improving the diet and quality of your exercise then it can play a part in giving your remaining hair its best chance of staying healthy and strong.

Lisa Armstrong Shares Hair Loss Woes

Unknown Reply 16:39

Lisa Armstrong, make up artist to the stars, is managing the breakdown of her relationship whole very much in the public eye. Now hair loss has added to her woes…

Lisa Armstrong

Lisa has spent over a decade working as a make up artist on the smash hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing and, as the partner of Ant Mc Partlin, was well used to being in the public eye. Ant Mc Partlin, in case you are not from the UK, is one half of the country’s most popular TV presenting duo known as Ant and Dec. In 2017 Ant Mc Partlin underwent knee surgery, during his recovery he was prescribed painkillers to which, he would explain later, he became addicted. The legacy of that recovery was an addition to both booze and painkillers which put an enormous strain on his relationship with Lisa, ultimately leading to a separation… a separation that seems reasonably permanent given that Ant has been photographed on holiday with his new squeeze looking ever so happy. Ant that is, looking happy. Not the new squeeze (though she probably was). And definitely not Lisa.

What Lisa Did Next

News of her separation from Ant was very public and Lisa decided, understandably, to head off to Los Angeles… where nobody has ever heard of him. While she was there Lisa definitely took care of herself, she lost a stone in weight and was looking generally great. Close observers might have noted the almost constant changes in hair colour though… likely a simple way to refresh her look whenever she fancied but in hindsight almost certainly an error. Talking to Closer magazine she said “I love changing my hair – its cool to have a different look every now and then. I bleached the hell out of it so it’s almost falling out, which is another story.

HIS Hair Clinic

It’s hard to read Lisa’s story and not feel sympathy for a girl whose life seems to have gone out of her control for a while. She seemed to make a great start to single life again and we sincerely hope the hair loss is something she gets to grips with quickly. A sensible hair care regime, avoiding harsh chemicals, would be a great starting point.

Love Your Melon takes on the Ultimate Hike

Nothing says a commitment to partnership quite like getting the team together and lacing up your boots to hike more than 25 miles – and that’s exactly what our partners Love Your Melon did for our Superior Hiking Trail Ultimate Hike. With one of the largest turnouts for the event yet, the Superior Hiking Trail team has raised more than $110,000 and counting for children’s cancer research! Thanks to the support of our hikers and partners like Love Your Melon – it was an incredibly successful, inspirational and emotional event. We chatted with Katie Spiegle, PR & Social Media Director at Love Your Melon about the team’s experience on the trail, here’s what she had to say:

Tell us about Love Your Melon and its connection to childhood cancer.

Love Your Melon is an apparel brand dedicated to giving a hat to every child battling cancer as well as supporting nonprofit organizations who lead the fight against pediatric cancer. Zachary Quinn and Brian Keller founded the company in 2012 while the two were sophomores in college. Fifty percent of profit from the sale of all Love Your Melon products is given to Love Your Melon’s nonprofit partners in the fight against pediatric cancer. To date, Love Your Melon has given over 147,000 beanies to children battling cancer and contributed over $4.7 million to fund cancer research initiatives.

Why does Love Your Melon support CureSearch?

Through our partnership with CureSearch, we are working together to accelerate the world’s leading pediatric cancer research. To date, we have given $768,607 across two different CureSearch programs: Dr. Davis’s research and the Catapult Awards. A portion of the funds support Dr. Davis, a Young Investigator who is conducting research on B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-Cell ALL) at Stanford University.

Additionally, we are dedicating funds to support the Catapult Awards. This project aims to identify the most promising research and remove the hurdles blocking these treatments from reaching clinical tests. Once the strongest research projects are identified, our funds help these studies move out of the academic lab and into trials, where they actually reach children. Ultimately, this means leading research will turn into real, significant results that will save children now.

What does it mean for you to participate in the Ultimate Hike?

For us as a Love Your Melon team, participating in the CureSearch Ultimate Hike was an extremely meaningful way to literally put our boots to the ground and take action on the things we care about. We work hard every day in difference facets of our company, but it is always good to step away from the office and remind ourselves of the cause behind our efforts. The hike was a humbling way to motivate and inspire us to continue working hard in support of children and families battling pediatric cancer.

Love Your Melon Hike

What was a memorable moment from your hike experience?

The hike was long – 25.5 miles long – and took our group most of the day to complete. We woke up long before the crack of dawn and began trudging single-file through soggy, muddy paths with only our headlamps as our guides for each step. As the morning went on, the skies remained overcast, which provided a somber setting as we marched on. I found myself thinking a lot about the families that were hiking in honor of a loved one affected by pediatric cancer, and how emotional this hike experience must be for them. For us as a team, each step was a commitment to enduring this small challenge in support of the families who endure much bigger challenges every day.

I remember the moment that afternoon when the sun broke through the otherwise cloudy, grey skies. It was near the end of the hike, and the glimmer of sunlight seemed to be a perfect reminder of the hope in the fight against pediatric cancer. Childhood cancer is a grey, dreary subject, and is a long, weary journey for many families, but the sun reminded me there is a ray of hope for better treatments and cures. That hope is our reason for hiking, and for continuing to fight pediatric cancer through the work we do every day.

Love Your Melon Hike

Tell us about how it felt to be surrounded by so many people who have been affected by childhood cancer.

It was extremely humbling to be taking on this challenge among such a resilient group of people. Countless conversations on the trail unearthed heartbreaking stories of the ups and downs of pediatric cancer treatments, the importance of strong family bonds and the many triumphs and tragedies of the pediatric cancer journey. As a team, we were able to walk alongside these individuals as they recounted their very personal reasons for hiking. Whenever we felt tired, these stories and realizations helped us to continue on, knowing that our slightest bit of discomfort was worthwhile for those children and families who are experiencing the most difficult time in their lives.

What is your hope for the future of childhood cancer?

Our hope is for a future where no childhood is defined by pediatric cancer. We hope for less-toxic treatments for these children, and ultimately we hope for cures that will ensure no child has to endure pediatric cancer. We feel hopeful about these goals, especially when we hear about the incredible research being conducted by our partners like CureSearch!

Love Your Melon Hike

At CureSearch, we’re inspired by our partners at Love Your Melon and every Ultimate Hike participant and supporter. Help us continue to raise funds for children’s cancer research! Learn more about how you can get involved with the Ultimate Hike at ultimatehike.org or consider donating today to our mission to end children’s cancer.

Hair Transplant Horror Story

Unknown Reply 04:28

Not the usual  sort of hair transplant disaster this one, but one that caught our eye just the same. We look closer.

Hair Transplants

The surgery has been available for over a generation now. Some advances have been made during that time as surgeons developed new techniques for harvesting the follicles to be relocated, moving on from the terrible strip scars that blighted many a patients life. First they offered what were called plugs, but this seemed to change little in terms of the scarring… trading a long strip for a series of relatively large circular scars. These days the harvest scars can be reduced down to some very small sizes, though scar tissue is still scar tissue

At the same time the way they care for the follicle once it has been removed from the scalp and prior to relocation has evolved. This has led to improved rates of successful grafts.

Syed Bukhari

Syed Bukhari, from Manchester in the UK, was a balding man with a plan. He wanted a hair transplant and was determined to get one, along with a few other expensive items on his wish list. Unfortunately he did not have the cash himself and so came up with a heartless plan to rob a couple suffering from dementia, both in their eighties, of their savings totalling £150K. Not content with stealing their cash, having tricked them into believing he worked for their bank he managed to sell their house for another £150K. It is not clear whether he would have been caught for those two robberies but when he went to try and take out a £40K loan in their name, having posed as the couple’s son, he was caught out when their real son noted some irregularities and contacted the police.

Spending Spree

Before the police could catch up with him, Bukhari appeared to be doing his best to remove the evidence… by spending it. When the police did eventually knock on the door they found Bukhari sporting a good-looking £10 hair transplant and a Rolex watch. It remains to be seen how the transplant will hold up during his prison sentence, one month short of eight years.

HIS Hair Clinic

A shocking story on so many levels, to eviscerate the finances of an elderly couple to indulge your spending fantasies seems unbelievably cruel. We don’t believe in Karma here at HIS HQ, but we do believe in justice and eight years in jail seems about right to us. That is not to say Karma won’t catch up with Bukhari too, making yourself more handsome just before a long jail sentence does not strike us as a good plan.

Fashion Is Alopecia

Unknown Reply 03:53

A group of British models are campaigning on behalf of alopecia sufferers everywhere by insisting their condition is not a problem. We look closer.

Alopecia

According to that wonderful British institution, the National Health Service, eight million UK women suffer from alopecia. That enormous figure covers women who have developed what is commonly called female pattern baldness, where the hair thins evenly across the top of the head, as well as a number of other conditions like post partum hair loss… a temporary issue experienced by young mums as their body rebalances itself following birth – during the pregnancy they will likely have had amazing lush hair while their systems were in overdrive. The compensating dip in condition after delivery can last up to a year before the hair returns to it’s pre pregnant state.

The women involved in the campaign are unusual in that the majority lost all their hair at a very young age, some before their teens. This form of alopecia is called alopecia totalis and can involve the distressing loss of all hair from the body. Particularly challenging for very young children and their families it can have devastating social consequences. Through the support of family and friends many can come through the experience stronger, the ladies involved in this campaign are great examples.

Fashion is Alopecia

Liverpool based Claire Namukolo was the founder of hair loss charity Hair Heals, a support charity helping anyone suffering from hair loss. Claire herself has experienced a variety of hair problems, everything from traction alopecia through the use of tight braids to post partum hair loss. Already involved in the fashion industry through her annual event Liverpool’s Urban Hair Show, she came up with the idea for Fashion is Alopecia. A promotional campaign to get the fashion industry to recognise that bald women can be beautiful. She teamed up with a couple of models, Eve Betts from Wales and Nichola McAvoy from Manchester, and organised a photo-shoot – Eve and Nichola both suffered from aggressive alopecia at a very young age.

HIS Hair Clinic

Claire has done great work organising a photo shoot for Eve and Nichola and then promoting it to the point where it was aired on the BBC, you can see the short video by clicking here. It strikes us as a great way to kick off alopecia awareness month and we look forward to many more positive stories breaking as the month progresses.

Are Eggs The Answer To Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 17:53

If the results of tests in Japan are proved true then the answer to hair loss could be in a daily dose of eggs. We look closer.

Eggs

The mighty egg is an incredible source of nutrients. The website Healthline call them among the healthiest and most nutritious foods on the planet. And who can argue? Eggs are stuffed with protein, making up a whopping 35% of the total.. the egg white is pure protein, or very nearly. A typical egg provides around 6g of protein and around 80 calories of energy.

An egg contains an impressive list of additional benefits in the shape of minerals and vitamins as well as fats, of the healthy variety, beneficial antioxidants and nutrients of the type most of us struggle to achieve a regular intake of. But it was specifically the egg yolk that caught the attention of scientists who were interested in how it interacted with the body and stimulated the production of yet more proteins. One of those generated proteins was of particular interest to the team who were trying to find a key to the secret of growing new hair.

Japanese Study Findings

Publishing their work in the Journal of Food and Medicine, a team from Japan announced some interesting results from a series of studies on eggs and their potential for use as a hair loss cure.

The team have been implanting human hair follicles into mice before treating them. The mice were then given a compound, variously as an oral medicine or topically, created in the lab by the Japanese team. Their report specified the compound in egg yolk which the team identified as responsible for producing a protein, vascular endothelial growth factor, that is critical for the repair and growth of hair cells. The study authors have described the treatment as a potential hair growth stimulation agent.

HIS Hair Clinic

It was a story that took the HIS HQ team by surprise, eggs as a hair loss cure. Eggs remain a daily dietary habit for many people so we wonder whether there is not some research to be done on any correlation between diet and hair retention. In any case, as we know from so many previous news articles of this nature, there are a great many steps between hairy mice and something more exciting – but this research is an original line of enquiry and you can be sure we will continue to track their progress.

A Baldover – Are You Serious?

Unknown Reply 09:53

Courtesy of fading UK tabloid The Sun we bring you news of an article they ran giving a baldover to hirsute celebrities.

The Sun

The Sun was, once upon a time, a hugely significant influence on British politics, with a conservative message that regularly and deliberately overstepped the boundaries of good taste with provocative headlines. It’s sister paper, News of the World, was a Sunday paper that carried similar themes with added celebrity gossip. It eventually closed itself down following it’s disgraceful role in hampering a police investigation into the disappearance and murder of a young girl.. and the public reaction that provoked.

The Sun continues its work despite falling sales, less than half where they were a few years ago, and still has the ability to make us choke on our cornflakes from time to time.

Not So Fabulous

In a section called Fabulous they ran an article titled Baldover… it offered the reader hair-raising makeovers of male celebrities to see what they would look like bald.

The whole piece was trumped up on the basis of one long lens shot of David Beckham, which appeared to show his blond locks thinning out. It prompted the Sun to mock up a picture of what he might look like once the process is complete… and assuming that he ends up at a Norwood scale 7  – where just a ring of hair connects the ears around the base of the back of the head.

Clearly delighted with their work they thought it would be a good idea to do the same thing to several other celebs more usually associated with having great hair. The current James Bond, Daniel Craig if you prefer, was described as bearing a resemblance to Putin, Simon Cowell they said was more Ex Factor than X Factor, and someone called Kit Harrington, previously unknown to us, was described as looking decades older.

HIS Hair Clinic

It’s fair to say this got the blood boiling at HIS HQ. This type of mindless abuse of bald people must surely be consigned to the dustbin of history. David Beckham is a handsome man, he will still be a handsome man when he loses his hair… their brutal imagining of what he might look like serves only to support their ugly theory that bald equals bad. We know the impact it has on young men going through it, worse than that it encourages similarly mindless attitudes among their peers. Someone called Becky Pemberton put her name to this drivel, we’ve added her name to the list of people never to send a card to. There is no link to her original article… she most definitely does not deserve the clicks. We suggest you get up a little earlier Becky, put some thought into how that picture of David might have been used to produce a positive story – though you might have to work at a different paper to get it published.

Is Alpecin Shampoo For Hair Loss?

Unknown Reply 15:25

Alpecin shampoo seems to have taken the market by storm with a reputation as beneficial for hair loss. Does their latest TV advertisement cast more doubt on that reputation.

Dr Wolf

The original Dr Wolf was a German pharmacist who set up a factory to produce health related products, mostly nutritional. Among his product set though was a pungent hair tonic containing caffeine. The factory was blown up by the British during the war and rebuilt by his son, also Dr Wolf – bear in mind that anyone with a university education in Germany can and usually do call themselves Doctor.

These days the business is thriving, not least on the basis of the sales of Alpecin, they tell us that although much has been done to improve the smell the actual tonic remains faithful to the original Dr Wolf’s recipe. We are happy to take that at face value, the active ingredient was and is caffeine.

Alpecin Shampoo

It came to our attention again with a new version of their TV advert in the UK. Previously a German Tour de France type cycling team were their celebrity partners and the advert featured a rousing, if you like, team talk from the captain to his team-mates on the necessity of fighting for your hair.

The latest advert simplifies the message and takes away the awkward visual of men in lycra pretending to get worked up about a shampoo. The new version is almost devoid of visuals, instead a voice asks a couple of simple questions; Are you a man? and Do you have hair? These are followed with the vague call to action of Fight for your hair. Neither on the packaging or in the advert is their ever any suggestion that this is a hair loss product… and for good reason we suspect.

Odd that hair loss gets no mention on TV when you consider how prominent it is on their website. There you will find details of studies conducted that claim to evidence hair regrowth… along with a host of other improvements.

HIS Hair Clinic

We know that much more was made about the benefits of Alpecin for hair loss in the early days of its marketing here, they had a hair loss suffix to their website URL a decade ago which is not there now. Could it be that the stringent regulations around TV advertising would challenge the veracity of their claims?

Breakthrough Therapy Designation for Hair Loss Cure

Unknown Reply 15:25

Breaking news from New York where Pfizer confirm they have received Breakthrough Therapy Designation for their hair loss treatment.

Pfizer

The presence of Pfizer in this news piece lends this news real credence. Far removed from the usual pack of ambitious and variously funded small start-ups, Pfizer are one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical firms and would lay claim to being the number one when it comes to innovation in bio-pharmaceuticals. Fans of cures for hair loss articles will have read at least something about one of their important research areas Janus Kinane, known as JAK, inhibitors. The treatment works, so the theory at Pfizer goes, by blocking a key message which if left alone would cause hair loss.

Earlier this year Pfizer were awarded Breakthrough Therapy Designation for another version of the treatment, known as JAK1 it is aimed at treating moderate to severe dermatitus. This designation is awarded by the FDA in cases where there is a clear and desperate need for a treatment, where either none exists at present or the new treatment is a considerable improvement that has passed Phase 2 trials with flying colours. So the designation was a great result for the JAK team at Pfizer and offered encouragement to those working on JAK3, the version for hair loss that they might achieve the same.

Phase 2 Study Results Expected

Even ahead of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology, EADV to its friends, where their Phase 2 study results will be officially presented, the FDA have seen fit to award Breakthrough Therapy Designation to JAK3. The boss of development at Pfizer’s inflammation and Immunology team, Michael Corbo, said: We are encouraged by this Breakthrough Therapy designation as it underscores the potential of our JAK3 inhibitor to address a critical unmet need. We are continuing to work closely with the FDA on the developmental process with the goal of bringing this potential new treatment to patients living with alopecia areata as soon as possible.

HIS Hair Clinic

It certainly sounds as though things are suddenly moving very quickly for JAK3, we will definitely need to keep an eye on the news to see what comes next but presumably a double blind clinical trial… and then a product. Which will still be some time away. But it would be the first new FDA approved hair loss treatment for a very, very long time. And the first ever designated for use against androgenetic alopecia. Fingers crossed.
