Travolta Comes Clean About Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 04:04

After a stellar career spanning decades, and always featuring his thick black locks, John Travolta, has finally come clean about his hair loss. Very clean indeed.

John Travolta In Pictures

His acting career started on television, where he appeared for four years until 1979 in a show called “Welcome back, Kotter.” It was in 1977 he got the break that would propel him to stardom when he appeared in the surprise film of that year, Saturday Night Fever. Grease, where he appeared alongside Australian poplet, Olivia Newton-John, would cement him for a generation as a superstar. Although his career did decline during the eighties, he bounced back spectacularly to star in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction in 1994. From there he went from strength to strength landing great roles in a series of successful movies, winning a Golden Globe for his performance in the brilliant Get Shorty.

More recently has seen him spend time the other side of the camera. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for producing American Crime Story: The People vs. O J Simpson. He was also nominated for another Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as attorney, Robert Shapiro, in the same show.

A History of Hair

There are a couple of features that stand out on John Travolta. One is his piercing blue eyes, that were clearly popular with casting directors. But the other was unquestionably his hair. It featured heavily in his early story, where Grease required him to use a comb in almost every scene. In fact, it is a rare film where he is not asked to run a comb through his hair for the benefit of the camera. It is fair to say his hair became a trademark, defining his look and becoming the envy of less hirsute men everywhere.

Rumors seem to have circulated about his hair for a very long time, the grapevine repeatedly telling us that there was some trickery involved. The suggestion was that even back at the start of his career he was having to address problems with thinning. The solution was almost certainly a hair system of some sort… hair fibers do not allow the wearer the luxury of a comb. Given the extravagant, thick nature of his hair, a weave would have seemed to be most likely. If his hair loss really did begin that long ago it is entirely possible he has had to upgrade the solution over time as the hair loss progressed, almost certainly ending up with a traditional hair system using glue.

Coming Out As Bald

Most likely, the pressure of maintaining the regime over decades began to tell. Or maybe he simply could not be bothered anymore. In any case, the A list veteran now in his mid-sixties decided enough was enough and posted a selfie that would clear everything up for his fans. A picture posted at an event, accompanied by his daughter in the shot, showed a relaxed looking Travolta seated at a black-tie event without his hair system. What we get to see is a standard guy in his mid-sixties with a modest amount of remaining hair, somewhere between a Norwood 6 & 7. Profoundly bald, but smiling and undoubtedly handsome.

HIS Hair Clinic

Maybe he is simply not being offered the sort of roles that require him to don the hair system and play a man a couple of decades younger than he really is. Whatever the reason, we would like to welcome him to the bald hall of fame. UK tabloid, The Sun, chose to run the selfie on top of an article which featured a series of stills from some of his biggest roles. Each was posted next to an edited version showing the actor how he might have looked rocking a bald head… unfortunately it was in their sad, moronic, style with mocking captions.  Shame on them.

Exactly What Is In Your Vitamin Supplements?

Unknown Reply 08:24

With sales of mineral and vitamin supplements soaring we ask, in light of concerning news from the USA, exactly what are we being sold and can we have confidence in the information on the label?

Vitamin Sales Boosted

Sales of vitamins and minerals are soaring. Driven on by a steady shift in attitude towards a healthier lifestyle but underpinned by innumerable news stories extolling their benefits. More than that, we are urged to make supplements a daily routine almost regardless of lifestyle and diet. It is possible to make the case for a supplement to even the healthiest among us.

Vitamin D, for example, has been in the spotlight of late. As we move through winter in the northern hemisphere and the hours of daylight are at their minimum, starving us of our most available source of vitamin D, direct sunlight on the skin… a wonderful connection back to primordial times as our bodies are capable of turning sunlight into something useful. In the absence of the sunlight, we are forced to turn to our diet to get the extra. For vitamin D however, this turns out to be more challenging than for many other vitamins. It only occurs naturally in a limited range of food, oily fish along with beef and liver. There are also dairy products which can be fortified, but generally speaking, it can be a challenge.

Vitamin D is essential to maintain healthy bones and so much more, deficiency can lead, in children, to Ricketts and in adults to osteoporosis. Low levels have also been associated with hair loss, fatigue, muscle pain, impaired wound healing, and even depression, the last one is hardly surprising you might think. Which all combines to make a substantial case for the supplement. It was reported that during a series of press articles in the UK  on their benefit last year sales rose by 70% in a short space of time… a testament to just how easy it is to convince people of their necessity.

What’s In The Bottle?

While some scientists dispute the benefits of supplements, based on the ability of our body to successfully absorb them when they are not arriving in their natural form, there can be no doubt that when we buy a bottle there is an expectation that it will contain what is described on the label.

in worrying news from the USA, it appears that might not always be the case. Federal investigators tested three popular supplements and in two of the three discovered that an advertised active ingredient was simply absent. Not an oversight on behalf of the manufacturer either, since both had used a substitute ingredient… just as worryingly, the investigators were unable to identify those substitutes.

HIS Hair Clinic

We think the moral of the story must be that, wherever possible, we should be taking our vitamins and minerals in their natural form, in our diet. Or out in the sun for vitamin D in the summer months. For those who do take supplements, and we do not want to undermine confidence in them at all, the old rule of caveat emptor applies. Try to stick to reputable brands to avoid being suckered by a nefarious manufacturer. The two cases mentioned in this article are both now with the FDA for review, but it is unlikely to end well for the rogue manufacturers.

Hair Loss Details You Can Rely On

Unknown Reply 10:21

Hair loss can be a uniquely challenging experience, complex and mysterious, we look for some hard details that we can all rely on.

Hair Loss

In all its forms it is an unwelcome and occasionally devastating symptom. Exactly what it is a symptom of varies wildly, any number of commonplace experiences can trigger it. Illness, an emotional upset or shock, thyroid problems (both underactive and overactive) pregnancy… any of these and more besides can deliver a bout of hair loss that may be temporary or permanent according to type and treatment. For the vast majority of us, hair loss is not due to any of these factors, it is a simple inherited fate, in your genes and waiting for you.

Starting Point

We all start off with a huge number of follicles, with variations according to race and for Caucasians a variation between the hair colors.

Afro hair ranges between 50 and 100 thousand follicles, Asian between 80 and 140 thousand. If you are caucasian with red hair the average is 86 thousand, brunettes 100 thousand, black-haired people will average 110 thousand, and blondes top the density charts with 146 thousand.

There are also differences in the shape of the follicle and slight variations in the rate at which they grow.

Losing Hair

Looking specifically at the most common form of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia. it is a question of when rather than if. According to the American Hair Association, only one man in six will still have a full head of hair by the age of 50. Two out of three will have lost hair by the age of 35.

Each of these follicles, regardless of race or gender, will be capable of producing 20 or so hairs over a lifetime. Some, sadly, do not. Afro hairs grow at around 0.9cm a month, Caucasian hair at around 1.2cm and Asian hair at 1.3cm.

Despite the differences outlined earlier, which are predominantly cosmetic, and some variations on the average onset age between races, the diagnosis is consistent. Androgenetic alopecia sees the immune system attack the hair follicles, disrupting the growth cycle and sticking them in the rest phase. Eventually, they are reabsorbed back as skin, disappearing forever.

Fighting Back

At present, there are a number of tools available to you, Medication can stave off the advance by disrupting the signal pathways the immune system uses. Laser combs can stimulate the scalp and promote healthy growth. Stem cell technology is in its infancy but numerous studies are being conducted to better understand how it might be used to make hair loss a thing of the past.

HIS Hair Clinic

While there are a lot of features around your hair that you share with millions of others, what is extremely subjective is the intensely personal reaction to discovering your own hair loss. The sad truth is that by the time we notice the advance is usually already significant.

New Study Looks At Vitamins And Hair Loss

Unknown Reply 06:01

A team of researchers in Saudi Arabia has been poring through study results to improve our understanding of the interplay between our diet and hair loss. With interesting results, we look closer.

Medical Data Mining

A new study, published in Dermatology and Therapy, aims to answer some of the myriad questions there are around the role of vitamins and supplements involved in hair loss. There is a mountain of evidence on the subject, the result of hundreds of previous studies – some of that evidence, however, is conflicting and drilling down to what might be a correct answer an enormous challenge.

In an attempt to clear the water a team, based at the Prince Sultan Military Medical City, searched two huge databases, PubMed and Google Scholar, to compile every published article they could find on the subject.

As the authors of the new study explained “There are several reasons to suspect a role for micronutrients in the normal hair follicle cycle, playing a role in cellular turnover, a frequent occurrence in the matrix cells in the follicle bulb that are rapidly dividing. Management of alopecia is an essential aspect of clinical dermatology given the prevalence of hair loss and its significant impact on patients quality of life.”

Key Findings

Androgenetic alopecia is the medical term for that most common cause of hair loss, the age-related type that we inherit from one or both parents. It occurs when the immune system attacks the hair follicle.

The researchers identified a relationship between low levels of vitamin D and alopecia areata. With the recommendation that Vitamin D levels should be supplemented if found to be low. There are also indications that levels of iron and zinc should also be supplemented though more studies are required to understand their detailed effect.

As well as balding the team looked at studies which centered around pigmentation of the hair. Iron, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and selenium are all likely to be involved, so supplementing your intake of these can help stave off premature grey or white hair.

Conclusions

As is invariably the case, the overarching conclusion on any research involving hair loss turns out to be that more studies are required.

In the words of the study authors “Given the role of vitamins and minerals in the normal hair follicle development and in immune cell function, large double-blind placebo-controlled trials are required to determine the effect of micronutrient supplementation on hair growth in those patients with both micronutrient deficiency and non-scarring alopecia to establish any association between hair loss and micronutrient deficiency.”

HIS Hair Clinic

In addition to the huge amount of research being done on stem cells and the microbiology of the hair growth cycle, it is encouraging to see a team working on something that we can all do something about today. Diet has always been known to play an integral part in healthy hair growth, an improved understanding of the detailed mechanisms involved can only be good. For more detail on the report click here

Are JAK Inhibitors The Hair Loss Cure We Have Been Waiting For?

Unknown Reply 06:17

Janus Kinase inhibitors, commonly known as JAK inhibitors, have been lauded as a potential hair loss cure. As they make their way through trials we take a closer look.

Why Would JAK Inhibitors Work?

Janus Kinase (JAK) is a family of enzymes your body uses to control its response to infections and wounds. They are part of a signaling system that triggers the reaction and engages the inflammatory and immune responses. The most common form of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia (better known to most as age-related hair loss), is believed to occur as part of an autoimmune reaction which sees the immune system begin to treat our hair as an enemy. Other, less common, forms of hair loss are directly attributed to issues with the immune system.  The process involves a group of proteins called cytokanes, molecules which act as the workhorses of the immune system, enabling cells to communicate and receive instruction… to maybe move towards an area of inflammation for example.

Because hair loss is attributed to an immune system response, it was hypothesized that by interfering with the signaling between these cells that it might be possible to reduce, or even stop, hair loss. That theory triggered some serious research…

Early Efforts

The first name we heard was ruxotilinib, it went into trial and results were apparently positive if uninspiring. Since then developments have been made based on the experience of trials aimed at improving outcomes, though not necessarily just measuring the amount of hair saved or grown. These early trials are typically aimed at proving not just efficacy but safety. One of the main issues they discovered was that a significant number developed an intolerance to the treatment. Improvements have been attempted and several forms of JAK Inhibitor are currently being worked on. One, fedratinib, is a great example of just how challenging this work can be. Despite encouraging results work was canceled when a small group, 8, out of the nearly 900 on the study developed a rare condition associated with thiamine (vitamin B1) depletion. Further examination of the study results would later reduce the number of the study group who suffered from the condition and today fedratinib has been acquired by another company, set up by the scientists who originally developed the treatment, clinical trials are anticipated to begin later this year. Like we said, challenging work.

HIS Hair Clinic

It seems ambitious, to play with the immune system in the hope that we can interfere, in a positive way for the client, with hair growth but somehow leave the rest of the endocrine system untouched. There is clearly something in the science around these signaling pathways but it may be that we are a few big discoveries away from being able to manipulate it to our advantage. Ruxotilinib and fedratinib are just two of many and we will continue to scour the news for updates on progress.

How To Spot Hair Loss Cure Scams

Unknown Reply 06:17

We suspect snake oil salesmen have been around ever since men started to go bald. The modern version advertises his wares on the internet, so how can you spot these hair loss scams?

Snake Oil

Famously, in 19th Century America, the seven Sutherland Sisters, all with beautiful flowing hair, were used to advertise their father’s hair restorer. The scam worked because of the massive latent demand for a product that might prove beneficial. Looking back to a time when the pace of change, in the throes of the industrial revolution and the growth of the railway, was dramatic, it must have been entirely believable that science had cracked the problem of hair loss.

You might like to think that in the enlightened 21st Century we would be over that. Anyone with access to the internet, which is almost everyone, and 20 minutes spent researching the matter, should arrive at some sensible conclusions. That science is working hard on finding the solution but are not there yet. When we say science, we mean some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies along with a rash of young biotech start-ups investigating various aspects of the process. What has become much better understood through this process is the serious complexity involved in hair growth with over 200 genes identified as involved.

Despite all this the market for modern snake oil is unabated. So how do they continue to operate successfully?

Hair Loss Scammers

The market has moved on since the days of the Sutherland Sisters. Apart from posting adverts in newspapers across the country to attract mail order customers, Mr. Sutherland would drag his daughters around the land and sell his tonic from the back of his cart. These days the internet has supplanted the need to leave home to sell anything and is where the modern scammers are doing their business.

Almost invariably, the adverts will appear under the heading “sponsored articles from around the web”. There are a handful of key phrases to look out for too… “Magic Hair Growth” “Get Your Hair Back” or “Do Not Get A Hair Transplant Till You Have Tried This”. Open the advert and the offer will fall into one of two categories. The first is an ancient cure, used for millennia by an Amazonian tribe or somesuch. The other is pseudo-science, where the claim is to have unlocked the door to a full head of hair using some technological advance.

Click on one of these adverts and you will be taken to a fake news site. Featuring testimonials, sometimes using celebrities. Pay the advertised price and you are likely to discover that a much more significant sum has been liberated from your account under something like a membership charge, in addition to the modest fee charged for the hocus pocus cure.

HIS Hair Clinic

It is a relatively easy thing to protect yourself from. Google the company name and or product you are looking at, try adding the word “scam” to your search to see what comes back.

Hair loss, along with weight loss, are commonly targeted as markets for the scammers, but they do not restrict themselves to these relatively benign groups. Others offer cures for serious illnesses like diabetes. The same rules apply, do your due diligence to avoid being caught out.

PS: We googled “Sutherland Sister Snake Oil” and discovered a potion that offers to

Raleigh kids train to take on the Ultimate Hike to honor their cancer-fighting superheroes and sisters

Maggie Morton, 11, and Daniel Griffith, 12, have already made their 2019 New Year’s Resolution – to hike 28.3 miles in one day. Maggie will be hiking in honor of her sister, Violet, who was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma before her first birthday. Daniel will be hiking to honor his sister, Eve, who was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms’ tumor at age 2. Maggie will be completing the Ultimate Hike for the first time and Daniel will be making his first trek without a parent on the trail.

Maggie and Eve on hike

“Eve’s journey has definitely helped shape Daniel into the empathetic and selfless young man he is today, someone who doesn’t think twice about finding out how he can help others,” said Daniel’s mom, Christy. Daniel is in the 7th grade at Lufkin Road Middle School and enjoys camping with his Boy Scout Troop and volunteers to feed the food insecure.

“Growing up around Ultimate Hike, Maggie has volunteered and watched her parents and sister hike, so we’re excited she is going to be part of it too,” said father, Chris, who is one of the coaches for the Triangle training team. Maggie attends Sterling Montessori and loves art, singing, acrobatic dance, and playing in the woods.

Maggie and Violet on treatment

Today both Violet and Eve are doing great, but their entire families are aware of the need for research that will lead to more cures and less side effects for survivors.

Risks Associated With Cheap Hair Transplants

Unknown Reply 08:19

Surgeons in the UAE have been speaking out about the issues they are seeing with clients returning from abroad suffering issues associated with cheap hair transplants. We look closer.

Hair Transplantation

Over the last couple of decades we have seen an explosion in the number of men, and increasingly women, who have elected to go the route of hair transplantation to address their hair loss.

There are several underlying reasons for the uptick. Top of the list would have to be improvements in the technology and techniques used. So clients no longer have to concern themselves with hideous strip scars, the legacy of removing large clumps of follicles from the donor area… which is fine until the client suffers from further hair loss ultimately forcing them to shave down and reveal the scar. Some of which can resemble a wound from a serious injury, the worst giving the impression that you might have suffered a terrible blow from an ax at some point in your past.

Buy Cheap Buy Twice

An article in the Khaleej Times, a Dubai based news organization, has been talking to local transplant surgeons who all tell a disturbingly similar story. They all talk about over 50% (some much higher) of their current clients coming to them for remedial work following treatments abroad… with Turkey named as responsible for much of the bad practice.

Turkey has become synonymous with cheap transplants. Package deals are available that include flight, accommodation, and treatment. The warning comes that often a single surgeon will be managing multiple clinics with technicians doing the actual surgery in a production line style environment. This can result in damage to the donor area and relocated follicles which ultimately do not survive the transplant, or grow out in the wrong direction. The gaps in the local health regulations and their limited enforcement mean that clients have little or no protection. This extends to the typically low quality of aftercare. Treatments like PRP, MESO and vitamin therapy are all usually used as part of a supportive follow-up.

HIS Hair Clinic

The absence of regulation, or even a qualified surgeon, should be of concern. Combined with the absence of meaningful follow-up… most clients will be back in the original country by the time any problems present, with little or no option for returning to the treatment clinic for advice. So the “buy cheap buy twice” warning kicks in as you are forced to attend a local clinic requesting a remedy.

Pfizer Progress With Hair Loss Cure

Unknown Reply 07:44

Following up a story we have been covering for a while, we bring news of another important step on the road to a brand new FDA approved hair loss treatment.

Pfizer

With a turnover of over $2.5B one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, Pfizer, haw been actively engaged in work on what has become known as JAK inhibitors. A form of treatment that interrupts a key messaging gateway which, if left unattended, is understood to negatively affect the ability of follicles to move out of the resting phase… and leaves the owner of those follicles with progressive and untreatable hair loss.

Their research was awarded “breakthrough therapy” designation from the FDA, a rare and important designation that highlighted the importance of the work. Back in September, we reported that their Phase 2A trials had gone well and that Pfizer now planned to move on to human trials… a new announcement from the company has finally put some flesh on the bones of those plans.

Phase 3 Trial

The drug, with the catchy name PF-06651600, is aimed at sufferers of moderate to severe alopecia areata, that distressing disease which typically leaves the sufferer with coin-sized discs of hair loss… though there are more aggressive versions that can see much more hair lost.

Pfizer has embarked on a randomized, double-blind, dose-ranging trial and are actively recruiting approximately 660 patients for the study. The man in charge of these things, Michael Corbo, Chief Development Officer, said “Including our JAK3 programme, Pfizer has several selective kinase programmes in the clinic with studies spanning across rheumatology, gastrointestinal disorders, and medical dermatology, where we aspire to deliver potentially transformative medicines to those living with chronic autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.”

PF-006651600 is an oral drug, the same drug is also being investigated for its efficacy in treating other conditions. Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis… all of which are withering conditions that lead to true suffering and for which there are no meaningful treatments currently available.

HIS Hair Clinic

The breakthrough therapy designation for PF-006651600 was important. No doubt it was fuelled by the same drug’s anticipated use for Crohn’s and arthritis, miserable conditions with a lot of associated pain. It seems unlikely a treatment for alopecia would have received the same consideration. We sincerely hope that it works wonderfully for all the conditions it is being tested for.

Beckham’s Hair Back In The Spotlight

Unknown Reply 07:59

The press has been as quick as ever to draw our attention to changes in David Beckham’s hair, following up a series of articles earlier this year with photographs apparently showing him with rapidly receding hair. We take a closer look at the latest speculation…

One Man And His Hair

David Beckham burst into the public arena as a talented 17-year-old footballer making his debut for the world’s largest club, Manchester United. His seemingly charmed life saw him become a key figure in that United team, along with several of his peers from the youth team, as they developed into a force under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He would win domestic club honors, including the treble of league, cup and Champions League in the same season. He would also captain his country with a generation of players that the press thought capable of actually winning a tournament… they didn’t, but Beckham earned enormous credit for his contributions, including a spectacular last-minute goal from a free kick that confirmed England’s place in the finals. His playing career would see him play for some of the world’s largest clubs in the games biggest leagues. Ultimately he would finish his career in the USA where he has since set about establishing his own team based in Miami to compete in the league there.

But his appeal was never just about his abilities on a football pitch. An easy charm and the looks of a Hollywood film star saw him marry, very young, to Victoria, at the time a member of the world’s most successful girl band. They remain together and proud parents to a gaggle of rapidly growing up children.

All About Hair

As a player, and husband to a pop icon, David himself became a style icon. Setting trends for his clothes, once boldly stepping out in what could only be described as a skirt. But it was for his hairstyles that he was rightly recognized. Whether it was a buzzcut crop or the extravagant lion’s mane style that he adopted for one world cup tournament. Whenever David changed his hair it would trigger millions of copycat boys to follow his lead. Interviewed back in 2012 about the prospect, as an older man, of losing his hair, David was quoted as saying that while he had nothing against hair transplants he could not imagine himself having one, preferring, he said, to just shave it all off.

Time Catches Up

Paparazzi pictures of David relaxing with the family on a beach last summer certainly seemed to suggest that time was up for David’s hair.  He seemed to have developed a considerable thinning across the top of his head. Red carpet pictures taken at the same time also suggested that David was not taking it lying down and speculation was rife around what his solution might have been… with many suggesting that a transplant had been performed.

Fast forward to tweeted images from his family Christmas and images of David with a handsome head of hair. backcombed at the front to form a sort of cliff of hair along the hairline. It triggered another frenzied bout of speculation… with one clinic owner suggesting he had tips from Wayne Rooney, another England football star who was very candid about his own procedure, using thickeners to disguise the presumably still developing transplant.

HIS Hair Clinic

We will confess to being Beckham fans. A genuine and likable lad from a tough part of East London he has matured to be an ambassador for all things good. Whatever he decides to do regarding his hair loss is fine by us… he would still be a ridiculously handsome man without it.

Could South American Herbs Provide Hair Loss Cure

Unknown Reply 08:44

Some remarkable claims are coming out of the mountains of Guyana in South America, where a young doctor is working on a herbal hair loss cure.

Dr. Sevanie Williams

Sevanie Williams grew up in the stunning valleys of the Potari-Siparuni highland region. Recognized as the most beautiful part of the country with spectacular mountains and breathtaking waterfalls, it is a place where the indigenous population is familiar with the wealth of herbs the forest has to offer.

As a young girl, Sevanie would take an arduous trip to school which involved a one hour walk up the mountain each morning and negotiating the slope down all the way home again in the afternoon. She would eventually be offered a scholarship by the government to study medicine in Cuba. But her passion for medicine was instilled in her childhood where she developed a keen interest in plant life, organisms and chemicals, and their composition. She listened intently to her grandmother’s stories of how herbs were used in medicine, including those which were credited with helping with hair loss.

Fast forward to today and Dr. Sevanie Williams is working with products she has developed herself, based on her grandmothers received wisdom, that can bring hope to hair loss sufferers. Dr. Emmanuel Cummings, Dean of Faculty of Natural Sciences, and a local laboratory are working with Dr. Williams to conduct tests and further research but anecdotal reports following tests conducted on her own family members are encouraging.

Results

It needs to be borne in mind that these are only anecdotal observations, but Dr. Williams describes her grandfather, bald for a long time, started growing hair on his bare patch. Just as remarkably, the hair that he still had, grey for many years, began to show some pigmentation at the roots.

HIS Hair Clinic

It would be wonderful if the answer to hair loss turned out to be a Guyanese shrub or plant that had just been waiting for millennia for us to discover it. What better proof of Nature’s complete superiority over our attempts to dictate terms. The idea that a humble plant could out-do the legions of researchers and scientists beavering away at the problem, reporting every development as having the potential to finally be the key to the door which reveals the true nature of hair loss and how to combat it.  But it never is. Just another key to another door, behind which are another set of even more challenging questions.

We will watch Dr. Sevanie Williams and her team of supporters very closely and keep you posted with her progress.
